《Unveiling the Arcane》Sage

After classes that day I was in my room with the twins packing up my things. I didn't have that much considering I hadn't gotten anything new since coming here a month ago. I had been more occupied with my new friends and the strange things I had learned after arriving. The twins sat on my bed watching as I made my way around the room grabbing things here and there. My pictures went back in and so did all my school supplies. I had borrowed a bag from one of the guys to throw some of my clothes in since I had a full wardrobe of uniforms that I hadn't arrived with. "I'll go pack your closet for you." Aiden offered before standing from the bed.
I jumped up faster than a jack in the box. "No!" I yelled a little too loudly.
Both twins turned to look at me and my face began to immediately start burning. My vibrator had found a permanent home in my closet after the guys had decided that they needed to always stay with me, and my only alone time was in the shower. I shook the stiffness from my spine before clearing my throat. "I mean I've got it. It'll only take me a moment. I'm already done out here anyway." I smiled way too wide to be natural.
They didn't say anything about the strange way I was acting. It was a good thing. I dragged the bags into the bathroom before closing the door behind me. I threw my clothes into the bags before hiding my precious cargo among the folded clothes. After the clothes and shoes were packed, I shoved all of my toiletries into their places before tugging the bags back out into the bedroom where the guys were lounging around on my bed. "All done," I announced.
They looked down at the two bags I had before looking back up at me. "That's it?" Caden asked.

I nodded. This was what I had brought with me; the bedding was even school-issued and was comfortable. The guys all had their own that they had brought with them, but I hadn't seen the point when I would just have to move it all after the year was over anyway. Aiden raised his brows but didn't say anything, just stood with his brother and waited by the door. We waited for a while until there was a knock. The twins opened it so we could all see Dante standing in the doorway. "Ready?" He looked over towards me for confirmation.
"Yep." I gave both twins hugs before I followed Dante down the hall leaving the others to get packed and meet us at the cabin.
Dante didn't say anything about my light packing with the three bags he carried along with him. My big suitcase had wheels so at least I could roll it behind me for most of the walk. The duffel I borrowed from the twins was tied to the top of my suitcase. It was a long walk, but I noticed that I didn't get as tired as I would have before my wings appeared. When we got to the cabin Dante led me to a room that was obviously not used as a bedroom. Considering all the other rooms in the cabin this one was very small in comparison. However, what it lacked in size was made up for with personality. It had shelves on almost all the walls and books pushed into all of the spaces. There was a large square space on one wall that had no shelves in the same dark wood as the shelves surrounding it. On either side of the square, there were three desk-sized drawers. Across the room from that, there was a fireplace with dark brickwork surrounding it. Next to the fireplace in the corner was a large plush chair with a small table beside it. In the center of the floor, there was a plush rug that was so large it only left a few inches on all sides to show the gray stained hardwood floors.

I looked over towards Dante, "I get to sleep in a library?" I was beginning to live out all my fantasies from childhood telling my parents that I would live in a library when I got older.
Dante nodded. I was fantasizing about creating a bead out of books like a nest. Dante took my bags and set them in the corner before walking over to the large wooden square without shelves. I gaped at him when he pulled down a murphy bed. This was my new favorite room in any place I had ever been even if I didn't get to sleep in a book nest. It was so cool that they had seemed to think about everything a guest would need when this space was designed. After pulling the bed down I saw there was a bar across the top above the bed for hangers and clothes that couldn't be placed in the drawers on either side of the bed.
"The sheets and blankets are new. Maddox ordered them to the house earlier today." Dante told me.
"I'll have to tell him thanks and sorry. I don't think Maddox will ever get rid of me now." I murmured, turning in circles to see more and more of the room.
Dante turned to watch me quietly fan girl over my temporary library oasis. I was never leaving. They would have to drag me out kicking and screaming. I finally stopped mooning over the sights to find Dante quietly watching me. I was never sure what exactly he was thinking. With a lot of people, it was easy to guess their emotions but Dante he always felt so many conflicting things at once it was hard to understand all the time. "Go ahead and get settled. We'll meet with everyone in the living room when they get back." Dante told me.
I held my arms out and gave Dante a questioning look. A small smirk touched his lips before he stepped into the embrace. It was short and he left as soon as it was over. I smiled before going over to unpack. I found the hangers for the clothes bar in one of the drawers. I had to stand on the edge of the bed frame to reach it, but it was fine. After all my clothes were put away, I moved the little table closer to the bed to set out the stuff I used most nights. There was an outlet behind the bed, so I was able to plug in my phone and laptop chargers there when I needed them. My shoes were placed in a row along the wall since there was no other place to put them without having them on the carpet. After everything was put away, I changed into one of the shirts that I had stolen from Maddox and a pair of pajama shorts. Then I slipped on my lion slippers. They were the ones I tended to lean towards when I wanted comfort since they were so special after my mom made them for me.
After I had procrastinated enough with brushing myhair and throwing it up into a bun, I bit the bullet and decided to go downstairs. I knew we would be talking about everything going on and I wasn't sureif I was ready for that. I didn't want to think about someone watching me. Iwanted to just hang out with the guys and feel safe for a little while. I knewthat pushing it off wasn't a good idea. This was something that needed to bediscussed and figured out. A weariness sunk into my bones, and I worried I wasgetting sick but I didn't have time for that right now. After a sigh, I mentallyprepared myself before leaving my new sanctuary.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
