《Unveiling the Arcane》Caden

We stayed the night at the cabin camping out in the living room, none of us feeling safe enough to leave Sage. I wasn't sure about the others, but my worry came from the notion that she might run away from us. Sage had fallen asleep in one corner of the couch with a book balanced on her knees. Maddox had managed to scrounge up a book or two in his grandfather's study that had mentions of Sirens. The only one with fact rather than fear-mongering was the one sage who had read the chapter on Sirens repeatedly. It was a large tome on the history of extinct Arcane Species on things like Dragons and Sirens.

I hadn't gotten a glimpse at the book, but Sage had seemed to think it was worth a few reads. I was the first to wake up, so I sat and watched the time pass before it was time for everyone else to get up. We would need to find a permanent solution soon. An alarm went off and the others roused for the day.

One by one they sat up bleary eyes evaluating their surroundings. Sage rubbed her eyes, likely dry from the reading she had done before falling asleep. "We need to get back to the dorms so we can get dressed," I announced to the half-asleep room.

There was grumbling but they all got up and started collecting their things. Sage didn't have any classes where at least one of us wouldn't be there. The problem with her safety was work. There were times she would go into the back at the cafe where we couldn't keep a constant eye on her. After the argument last night, I was almost jumping out of my skin at the idea of her being alone for even a moment.

It could have been a side effect of her Siren song but then again, I had always felt this way about her since we met. Now the idea of her being gone or taken away felt so much more real, the possibility; likely. We walked quietly from the cabin toward the school. Nobody had to say anything, but a tight diamond formation was formed around Sage. Maddox and I stood to either side as Dante led us down the paths and my brother brought up the rear. I hoped he was actually watching for danger and not just staring at Sage's very stare-worthy ass. We relaxed when we got into view of the school, our formation relaxing though not so much that Sage was out in the open. The schoolyard was empty and there was nobody wandering around the dorm this early in the morning.

We all shoved ourselves into the elevator and rode to the highest floor. Ice water dripped down all our spines when we exited to the view of Sage's door where a large manila envelope was laid out like a macabre offering. Sage's shoulders fell as she approached and picked up the envelope before letting us all into her room.

I was surprised when Dante didn't take the damn thing from her. I wanted to but held myself back. She didn't need to be the first to see the likely horrid contents of it. We watched as she pulled papers from the envelope. Maddox and Dante both looked over her shoulders. Aiden and I stood there transfixed like watching a car accident in slow motion. Waiting for it to stop so we can assess the damage done. She picked up the top page and a horrified gasp left her.

Dante's face hardened and his spine turned into steel. Maddox's hand reached up to cover his mouth in shock. "What's in it?" Aiden demanded.

"A threat," Sage answered her voice oddly devoid of emotion.

She flipped through the pages quickly before thrusting them out to us. I grabbed them before Aiden could and we stood close by each other as we looked down. The first page was a blank paper with a note written in red ink. I'll get rid of anyone that gets in our way. The rest of the page was blank besides the small, scribbled scrawl in the center of the page.

Under that page was a poor-quality photo printed on plain printer paper. It was a picture of us and Sage on the first day of school. When we met at the bench and sat with her. Red Xs were drawn over our faces, the lines messy from repeated tracing. The next was a photo of Sage and Dante the night that guy had attacked her. He stood before her cupping her cheek. The photo only showed his profile, but his face was crossed out and his hand touching Sage scribbled over. In big block letters that matched the writing from the first page, the word MINE was written across Sage's photo. It went on and on like that. Photos walking her to and from class with our faces crossed out. In the ones where we were touching her, there is some form of possession and threats written in red. The last page was a picture of us leaving the wards the night before my hand holding hers as she stepped over the fallen tree. She stays with ME! Was stalled across the entirety of that photo repeatedly.

"He's smart. I'll give him that." Dante remarked.

I glared up at him, "Psychotic is more like it."

Dante shook his head and took the pages. He ruffled through them before pulling two out. One was a photo of her leaving with Maddox the day her wings came out and the last one of us heading towards the cabin. "Look. Both photos are taken from within the wards as you guys left. He didn't follow because he's smart enough to realize that they would track that. The wards track who leaves, where they exit, and when."

A deep growl sounded in the room, and we all looked at Maddox still standing behind Sage looking more like a soul-devouring entity than he ever had before. She leaned back against his chest, and he seemed to relax a little. His chin rested atop her head before he turned his cheek to rub against her hair. The resulting picture I snapped has him looking like the giant cat he mostly is in his shifted form. His arms wrapped loosely around Sage's waist so he could make his demands known. "You're all staying at the cabin until this is settled."

"Is that against school rules?" Sage asked.

Dante was the one to answer, "Not really. We are all considered adults at sixteen in the Arcane community. We're treated more like college students than high school kids. I mean you know only sophomores through seniors are taught here so they don't consider any of us kids who need rules like that. The dorms are there because there is no student housing in the city. Besides, if there were they wouldn't rent to a bunch of teenagers. Since Maddox owns the cabin, it negates that challenge. We just stay on campus because it's closer." He explained better than my simple no would have.

Sage nodded at that. "I guess that does make sense. I haven't noticed any nosey RAs reporting me for spending the night with four guys." She bit her lip and blushed after that.

"We'll stay with Sage while she gets dressed. You guys go get ready before we're all late." Aiden spoke before turning to me. "You go ahead too; I'll go when you get back and you can stay here."

After we all agreed Dante, Maddox, and I headed off to our rooms to get dressed. The anxious thoughts of Sage being taken away from us wouldn't cease. I knew they would cloud my mind until this was all taken care of, and we knew she was safe. Unfortunately, because of the revelations from last night, there would always be a sense of danger in our lives as long as Sage was a part of it. I couldn't bring myself to regret meeting her even though I knew the danger being near her now posed. Meeting Sage had been the best thing to ever happen to all of us even if it ended up being the death of us.
