《Take My Broken Soul》CH 12- The Date

"Ok. Be good for Miss Mathews please. She was kind enough to watch you guys for a few hours, so let's not make her want to kill herself ok?" I say with a pointed look to Wyatt. See the thing is, he doesn't think he needs a babysitter so he's a complete brat whenever they have one.
"Isn't that a little harsh, Laine?" Nate whispers in my ear, humor clear in his deep voice.
"Not at all. I swear, these kids are monsters when they want to be." I say back with a chuckle before turning to the sweet old lady.
"Thank you so much again. We really appreciate it." I say.
"Nonsense. I'm happy to help out my wittle tater tot whenever he needs it." Miss Mathews says in a baby voice for the last part.
I try to stifle a laugh but a small chuckle escapes. Wyatt on the other hand just lets it roar and Nate blushes a deep red.
"Tater Tot?" Wyatt asks between laughs.
"Well of course. That's his favorite food. When he was little he would shove those things down his pants to hide them for later. Grossest thing I ever saw, but he was just too cute." The old lady says, seeming confused as to why we are all laughing.
Wyatt of course lets out another huge laugh and says something about 'telling the guys.' This earns him a glare from Nate, which does absolutely nothing to stop his hysterics. Miss Mathews is thoroughly confused now and turns to us with a questioning glance.
"Oh don't mind him. He's crazy. Thanks again and have fun kids. Come on Tater tot, we've got a date to get to." I say and then proceed to the door.
I hear Nate let out a low growl but just keep walking towards his truck. I'm about to reach the door when I feel strong arms spin me around. I look up to see Nate with a look of annoyance on his face, but his eyes give him away with their show of amusement.
"Crazy old woman. Doesn't know when to stop talking." He grumbles out and leans in towards my face.

Oh my gosh!!! Is he going to kiss me?
I feel my face get red and then Nate has a cocky smirk on his. He reaches around me and pulls open my door, obviously aware of what I was thinking. After my door is opened he waits with his hand out to help me in, always with that damn gorgeous smirk. Shaking my head, I take his hand and step into the truck.
"Relax. I think it's cute. Although, you might need to worry about Wyatt. I think he might've peed his pants he was laughing so hard." I reply. He grumbles something inaudible, then shuts my door and hops into the driver's seat.
"So, now that I've been thoroughly embarrassed. Ready to get on with our date?" Nate asks with mock self-pity, before putting the truck in reverse and backing out of the driveway.
"Oh hush, I can tell you love Miss Mathews, but yes. I am ready. Where are we going?" I ask.
"That, my gorgeous Angel, is a surprise." He says, turning to wink at me and then focusing on the road again.
"Really? But I hate surprises." I whine, to which he just smiles and stays silent.
We drive in comfortable silence for a few minutes. I didn't realize, but some time ago Nate had moved his hand to hold mine, on top of my thigh. I look over at him and immediately feel butterflies at the sight of him. He looks so handsome in his cowboy boots and hat, driving casually with one hand on the wheel.
You might want to wipe the drool off your mouth.
Shut up.
I'm snapped out of my thoughts when I feel the car stop. Looking up, I see we have pulled up in front of the diner. I feel the smile that hasn't left my face, suddenly begin to slip into a small frown. Not wanting to offend him, I quickly place a fake smile on my face. Nate just lets out a small chuckle and gets out to open my door. After helping me out, we start to walk to the place where I have to work everyday.

Great first date, Nate.
"Relax, I'm not that dumb. We are just picking up some takeout because I can't cook for the life of me, but I've got something much better planned." He chuckles out and I feel a real smile go back onto my face.
Wait, did I say that out loud?
"And no, you didn't say anything out loud, I could just see that fake grin a mile away. You don't ever have to lie to me, Angel. If you're unhappy, tell me so I can fix it." Nate says sincerely.
"Oh. Ok." I mumble.
I'm shocked that he could see through me. Usually I'm really good at hiding my feelings. We walk hand-in-hand into the diner. A grinning Jenni is standing with two bags of takeout when we walk through the door.
"Here you go, OC. Have fun Adi." She says with a wink to me and hands the food to Nate.
"Darlin' what are you doing? We're swamped back here and could use some help from your cute little butt." I hear Hal yell from the kitchen.
"Oh nothing dear. On my way back right now." She says and ushers us out of the building.
"Y'all better go before papa bear comes and kicks this sweet boy's ass." She says when we are outside.
I just let out a chuckle because I know how protective Hal is of my siblings and me. We walk back to the truck and are off to our final surprise destination. He still won't tell me anything, but I think he's right and I won't mind being surprised. At least I hope.

He was right.
"Oh my gosh, Nathan. This is beautiful." I say in awe.
We are standing in a secluded pasture. In front of us is a giant tree covered in fairy lights. There's a picnic blanket with pillows underneath it and a large movie screen right in front of that. The whole setting looks so comfy and inviting, and I'm completely amazed.
"You really like it? Wyatt said something about you always wanting to do an outside movie night, so I tried to make it look 'Pinteresty' or whatever it is girls like. Is it ok? We can do something else, if you want. I'm sure I could still get a dinner reservation or..." I interrupt Nate's nervous rambling by covering his mouth with my hand.
"I love it. It's exactly what I wanted." I say, take my hand away, and walk to the blanket with Nate carrying the food behind me.
We both sit down on the comfy pillows and Nate spreads out the food. He got all my favorites, probably provided to him by that lovably-nosy Jenni. After the food is all set up, he turns on the projector and Ride Along, my favorite movie, is projected onto the screen. He presses play and we cuddle into the blanket with our takeout containers.
I let out an internal happy squeal when he pulls me closer to him, after we are done eating, and lays my head on his chest. I'm here with a cute guy, have my favorite foods, the best movie ever, and am super comfy. I don't think life could get better than this.

I just dropped of the Scott siblings and am driving home with the biggest smile on my face. I don't think I've stopped smiling since I saw her extreme happiness at my surprise. Not that I would tell her, but it took me so long to get that all ready. Although, I'd do that and so much more if it meant I got to see that look on her face everyday.
I think this was the best night of my life and I can't wait to do it again. Just as I pull into my driveway I hear a ping from my phone, alerting me to a new text message. When I open it, I think my smile grows even wider.
I can picture her cute blush that will undoubtedly cross her face when she reads my message.
I feel my stomach get those girly butterflies.
And to think, all this happiness because an Angel walked into me on her first day of school. Thank you coach for making me late that day.

THIS FICTION HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. I don't recommend reading this, since the chapters are a bit haphazard (containing new edits which don't really fit in with the latter half of the story).
