《Accidental Nikkah》CHAPTER 40

When the sun is hidden behind the clouds, the atmosphere becomes humid and the light dim, and if the clouds are heavy, its better if they just let it rain, so that they can feel light again. And once the clouds are light again, they move along with the wind, bringing the sun into view, to shine on.
Ruhee kept on refreshing the news site, till the news didn't show up. For some reason, she knew that Aayan would take it down, and this time, she was really worried about it. She wanted a simple college life, and if anyone from her college saw this news and that picture, her college life would not be simple anymore. She was relieved when the news didn't load after sometime.
Yaay, Aayan took it down!
Ruhee had just got home from college, she had her meal with Sahma and went up to her room to complete her assignments. Since the model exams' were approaching, the work seems to have piling up. She was getting prepared for a week full of sleepless and studious nights. She had gone through her notes for about an hour and later, fell asleep.
'I said, Get out!' someone shouts, which causes Ruhee to wake up with a start. She hears another shout and rushes out the room, to see what all this shouting was about. As she walks out, she sees Aayan and Sahma along with another man and a lady. The man and Aayan were literally up in each other's faces, and it was clear that they were not happy about it as well, judging from their angry expressions.
What is going on!? Should I go down.
But the thought left her as soon as it came, when she heard the next few words. 'Along with our peace and happiness. Tell me Aayan, does your lover know, that Abbu cheated on my mother with your mother? That you were born, an illegitimate child?' Ruhee froze for a while. She couldn't believe her ears.
That man's father cheated on his mother with Ammi!!? Ammi cheated on her husband? Aayan an illegitimate child? What the heck is going on!!!?
To say Ruhee was confused would be an understatement, she was going nuts. 'Abbu didn't cheat, he married my Ammi, and I was born after they were married.' she heard Aayan say. 'Yeah, but their marriage was not registered when you were born, it was registered later on, which means you were born to an unmarried couple, or should I say, to a married man and his mistress.' the man, whose name Ruhee is yet to find out, says.
Okay, Whattt!!!???
Ruhee was losing it by now. She was more confused then ever. She really couldn't get what they were saying.

Okay, so, Ammi did marry Aayan's father but he didn't register it? No, they did register it, but after Aayan was born? So what, they were married. Wait, so, Aayan's father was already married before he married Ammi?
'Then, you should have left him when you found out.' Ruhee heard, and she is bought out of her thoughts. 'How could I, Hydari? Aayan was born by then. You want me to raise my child without a father? Would you have raised Mahir like that?' she hears Sahma say. Ruhee was shocked, that lady just told Sahma to raise a child without a father. Ruhee nodded her head at what Sahma said.
Yeah, you ask her, Ammi. Would she have raised Mahir like that? Wait, Who is Mahir?
'So, you mean it was Abbu's fault?' Ruhee hears the man ask Sahma, 'Not entirely. Yes, Abbu was wrong, to have not told Ammi about him being married, but he didn't look at us in different ways. He treated both of us as one.' Aayan said.
What? How can a man treat his son and wife as one? Now, he cannot make his son cook or his wife play cricket with him! Wait, he can play cricket with his wife, I would.
'No Aayan, he didn't see us as one. He saw me more superior than you. He gave me a well built, high ranked and rich company. The company he inherited from his family, but to you,' Ruhee sees the man point his index finger at Aayan, 'To you, he gave a small start up company. He didn't think us as equal.'
Oh, the "us" was referred to Aayan and that man, Now I see. Wait, did he just degrade my husband? Oh, you did not, you better have not. I am gonna pluck your eyes and cut your fingers, you human.
Ruhee looks at Aayan, but she could not see his face, as she was facing his back. 'Now, My dear brother, I am done talking. Do tell your girlfriend about us, then we'll see if she wishes to stay with an illegitimate child. I must say Aayan, she is one beautiful catch, after she leaves you, send her to me, I'll take good care of her.' the man said, and left with Hydari. Ruhee noticed that Aayan was balling his fists.
Aayan has a girlfriend!!? How come he didn't tell me? You know what Aayan, you should listen to your brother, send her to him. He said he'll take good care of her right, so no worries. Wait, BROTHER!!?? That man is Aayan's brother? Come to think of it, he did resemble Aayan in a way.

Ruhee's eyes widened when realisation struck.
Aayan and that man are brothers', which mean they have the same father. And Aayan's father was already married when he married Ammi, and if that man has been calling Aayan's Abbu, Abbu since I heard, which means, Oh My God!
Ruhee looks at the mother - son duo, consoling and wiping each other's tears. A small smile grazes Ruhee's lips at the site,'Just be glad that Ruhee didn't hear all this. It's still too early to tell her the truth.' Ruhee hears Sahma say.
Oh, so I wasn't supposed to hear all this? Okay, so let's just walk back into the room and pretend that I didn't just hear that Aayan is the son of his father's second wife and his father's first wife and son, hate them. Cool!
But Ruhee was too late to walk away as Aayan had already turned around and seen her, and so did Sahma. She didn't like how the colour drained off their faces on seeing her.
Okay Ruhee, they don't know that you know what they don't want you to know. So, you walk down there and act as you heard nothing.
And that's what she did, she walks down the stairs, as they both just look at her walking down. She goes and stands near them and says, 'Oh, Aayan, you are home, I didn't know. When did you come?' she said, in an overly cheery voice. She didn't get any reply from him. She looks at Sahma, who was also staring at her, 'Ammi, you also didn't tell me he was home.' she asks Sahma, with an awkward laugh.
'You heard everything, didn't you?' she hears Aayan ask her, in a emotionless voice,'Heard what? I just came out of the room.' she says, trying to act normal, but she knew she was behaving like a clown,'Oh look, it's almost time for dinner. I need to start cooking.' she says, and starts to walk over to the kitchen. 'Ruhee!' she hears Aayan call out to her. She halts in her steps,'You heard, right?' he asks her again.
Can't you just let go if I am not answering? No, he always has to be stubborn.
Ruhee signs and turns around to look at them. She nods her head and says, 'Yeah, I heard.' 'How much?' Aayan asks her, 'Enough to understand what is going on.' Ruhee says, feeling guilty for eavesdropping. She looks into Aayan's brown eyes to find various emotions swirling in them. She didn't know what was going on in his head, she badly wanted to know what he was thinking.
'Please, excuse me.' She hears Sahma say as she walks past Ruhee into her bedroom. Ruhee signs on seeing a retreating Sahma. It was obvious that she was sad and would be crying in there, and Ruhee didn't want to leave Sahma alone in this vulnerable state. She looks back at Aayan to find him still staring at her. She takes in a deep breath and walks towards Sahma's room.
She knocks the door and enters, to find Sahma sitting on her bed, crying,'Oh, Ammi.' Ruhee says and walks over to Sahma and engulfs her in a hug. Sahma holds on to Ruhee and cries out. Ruhee's eyes were also pricking with tears but she didn't let them flow. She had to be strong at the moment, so she swallowed her tears. She smoothes Sahma's back as she cries in her arms.
After a while, Sahma calms down and moves away from Ruhee. Sahma wipes her tears and looks at Ruhee, who gave her a small smile, but concern was clear in her eyes. 'I'm sorry, dear. I just couldn't hold it in.' Sahma apologies to Ruhee, 'Oh, don't be, Ammi. You just had to let it out.' Ruhee says. Sahma takes in a deep breath and looks at Ruhee, 'So, it's time to tell you the truth.' Sahma says.
'No, it isn't.' Ruhee says, 'You don't have to tell me anything, Ammi. It is not necessary.' 'But you must be so confused about everything.' Sahma says, 'Then, let me be confused. I have many things I am confused about, this will just be another unfinished book in the bag.' Ruhee says, smiling at Sahma. Ruhee takes Sahma's hands in hers and says, 'Ammi, Whatever happened, its the past now, and the past that hurts, is best left in the past. We don't need to revive it again and relive the pain, it's not fair to our pain free present.'
Sahma smiles at Ruhee as a lone tear escapes her eye. Ruhee wipes the tear away and says,'Now, let's have some tummy full dinner and let today, become a past aswell.' Sahma smiles at Ruhee and holds her hands in her,'You are really very nice, Ruhee. And after hearing you say those words, I want to let the pain go, by sharing it with you.' Sahma says. Ruhee was still uncertain about it, but the look in Sahma's eyes, told her it was what Sahma needed. Ruhee nods her head, ready to listen to Sahma.
Let's complete the unfinished book.
