《Mi Reina》Chapter Fifty - Midnight

"What was that?" I asked nobody in particular when I heard a weird noise that seemed to have been from downstairs. I opened my eyes and peeked over the covers and when I didn't see anything in the dim lighting, I sighed in relief. But just as I was about to fall asleep again, the noise repeated itself.
Now, I was more than just terrified. I sat up on the bed and looked around the room, scanning the surroundings. It was night time now and Rico, Nic and I had gone to bed around an hour back and it was midnight now.
Being a little paranoid, I placed my hand on Rico's bare shoulder, trying to wake him up without disturbing Nico, who had been laying down between us. "Rico?"
"Hm?" He hummed.
"Wake up." I said, shaking his shoulder to which he hummed again. "There's a sound coming from downstairs. I'm not sure what it is though." At my words, his eyes shot open.
"Sound?" He asked, his voice being a little groggy. I nodded, not wanting to speak any further.
He quickly sat up on the bed and walked to the closet to wear a t-shirt. The navy blue piece of clothing hung over the black sweatpants he had been wearing. Sighing, he ran a hand through his dark locks.
He looked to be in deep thought for a few moments before he spoke again.
"Okay, so this warehouse doesn't have security cameras on the inside so I can't check what's happening from up here." He stated. "I'll have to go downstairs myself. You and Nico, stay here and don't come down under any circumstances, alright?"
"What kind of a mafia Don doesn't have cameras in their warehouse?!" I whisper shouted.

"Me." He replied with a blank look. "Now shh..."
Rico pulled his gun out of the bed side drawer and carefully opened the door, and walked further while holding the gun in front of him. I, on the other hand, was afraid.
I brought my knees to my chest and wrapped my shaking arms around myself, curling up into a ball. I rocked myself back and forth in anticipation, hoping that Rico would be back soon and say that it was nothing serious and that the sound was just the trees or something outside.
But something made me feel like it wasn't. Like there was something that was going to happen, something felt off and irked me because I didn't know what it was.
What am I, a goddamn fortune teller?
Turning to Nico, I smiled at his sleeping figure, gently running my hands through his curly hair. Damn, I love this boy so much. I don't know what I would do without him; it's like my life would be incomplete.
Suddenly, I heard the loud grunts and groans coming from downstairs, followed by the breaking of glass and the click of a gun. Knowing that Rico would need help, I decided to go downstairs. Yes, it's a very stupid idea, I know, but I didn't want him to fight alone.
I had a feeling that this would happen. The people after us were bound to find the location of the warehouse at some point or another but I didn't expect it to be this soon.
Placing a hand on the little boy's shoulder, I shook him a little so that he would wake up. "Nico?"
He opened his eyes and looked up at me, probably wondering why I would wake him up so soon. To be honest, I didn't want to but I couldn't just leave him here, unarmed and exposed when someone could hurt him at anytime.

"Baby, can you do something for Momma?" I asked, while he sat down on the bed, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
He nodded so I carried him in my arms and stood up from the bed, walking to the opposite wall, or rather, something that looked like it was normal. I punched in the codes on the keypad mounted on the side and almost immediately, the painting on the wall split open, a door emerging from it. It revealed a small room inside.
The metal sheet that covered the door was made of Titanium which made it bulletproof and to add to it, it could be opened from the outside only with a code, making the panic room the safest place for someone to be in at times like these.
I was so thankful to Toni for telling me this just a few hours ago.
"I have to go downstairs to help Dadda to fight off the bad guys and I want you to stay in here. Either Dadda or I will come back for you but until then, try not make make much noise. I promise that I won't let anything to happen to you, okay?" I explained.
"Okay, Momma. I love you." He kissed my cheek.
"I love you too, my little jellybean." Was the last thing I said before he walked into the room. I pressed a button on the keypad which closed the door and took a deep breath before leaving the room.
Making my way out of the room, I tried looking down to the living room from the railing above but couldn't see much due to the the poor lighting.
I could literally feel my heart rate accelerating but I continued. While tip-toeing down the stairs, I could hear the clanks of what sounded like blades as they hit against each other. I ducked down while the bullets flew over my head as they made a hiss through the air.
Jeez, all I wanted was one night of proper sleep. Is that too much to ask for?
Once I reached the last step, I walked a little further and it was only then that all the noises stopped. And before I could even try to see better or even register what was happening around me, I felt something hard strike the back of my head.
I tried to stay awake but I knew that I had failed when I felt myself losing consciousness.

Jack of All Trades, Master of All
Jack was reincarnated, again. This time, the omnipotent sphere had finally revealed to him that this new world was, in fact, the real one, and his soul had just returned to his body after two years of coma. During that span, the Earth or the magical world No.146, where he was The Grand Sage, was just a simulation experience. Jack inherited the System of Knowledge from his former self in the previous world. But gradually, he realized there were other Returners, holding other powerful Systems that they themself were also granted. The reason? The Omnipotent Sphere refused to give an answer. With the ever-burning desire to find his former friends and companions at World No.146 after their souls too were returned to this world, Jack began his journey. Ahead of him, five hundred years old as he technically was, there might be some surprises he still wasn’t prepared for. This is an original translated work. I’ve always wanted to challenge my writing skill and post on Royalroad a few times, but, as it turned out, I realized my own English capability still limited me. Therefore, I am currently working with a team of three, hence the name Triopals, consisting of me, the author, a translator, and an investor who really put his faith in this project. My translator and I will work together to deliver four chapters each week. Depending on the translating, editing, re-reading, checking, and re-reading-again process, the chapters will be uploaded each day or all at once. Careful as we may be, there can still be some errors at our best, so we welcome grammatical corrections, etc. We are very appreciative of your support.
