《Mi Reina》Chapter Forty Six - Landing

At first, I thought that the jet was facing a minor turbulence but I knew that that was clearly not it once I peeked out of the window only to see a black colored helicopter nearing towards us. There were two men in, you guessed it, those signature black balaclavas so we could only assume that these people were Lorenzo's men.

But Lorenzo died because Devon shot him at the fort, didn't he? Then why the hell are his men still after us?

"Down!" Was the one word that Rico shouted almost immediately, which made the flight attendant as well as myself a little more alert than before.

My first instinct was to buckle the seat belt for Nico and wake him up so that I could tell him to bend down. He woke up and bent down, curling himself up into a ball.

I glanced at Rico and saw him bending down. From time to time, he took a few a few steps ahead, probably wanting to reach the cockpit to alert the pilot. In the time being, I hugged Nico close to me, our heads were between our legs.

"I'm scared, Momma." He whimpered.

"Don't worry, everything will be fine. You're safe." I ran my hands through his hair, kissing the top of his head.

Suddenly, the plane received a much forceful and overpowering force than the previous one. My heart jumped up to my throat for a couple of seconds. It felt as though we were being pushed downwards to the ground. This could only mean one thing.

The plane was losing altitude.

I felt like we were falling to the ground, closer and closer by the second. In the midst of everything happening around me, I hadn't realized when the shooting stopped but I glad that I had one less thing to worry about.

I peeked out of the window for a second and took note of the empty light blue sky; the black helicopter had flown away.

I could hear my heart pounding against my t-shirt, beads of sweat rolling off of my forehead. Rhoda who was the flight attendant screamed in fear just as she tripped onto the ground, the floor of the plane making contact with her back. This action of hers added to Nico's fear, making him scream and cry out loud.

I felt the wave of mixed feelings of absolute helplessness, dread, anticipation, and fear rush over me. I didn't know how to calm him down at this point. What would I even say to him?

There was a loud bang accompanied by a cracking noise which I assumed was from the engine, making the entire plane to shake violently. The rush of adrenaline kicked in as I realized that we couldn't have been more than two hundred feet from impact to the earth below us.

I could hear the wings of the jet creaking, the seats thrumming in place, and I could only conclude that we were about to crash land.

With a final jerk, the most gruesome of all, the jet hit the ground with a brutal force, sending our bodies to different directions. I felt the aircraft glide across the land making the crunching sound even louder than it was.

Once it stood still, I lifted my head up, trying to look around me. But my vision had completely blurred due to the impact of the crash. I couldn't see much. I could see a blurry outline of a shivering Nico next to me, the flight attendant spread limp on the seat below her and from where I sat, Rico was nowhere to be seen.

A deafening ringing sound grew in my ears, almost forcing me to cover them with the palms of my hands. I sat there for a while, waiting for my vision and hearing abilities come back to me.

Moments later, I reached out to Nico checking if he had any injuries and slightly smiled to myself when I saw that he had nothing more than a small bruise on his forehead.

I checked my arms and legs, I didn't see any injuries and neither did I feel any pain. Unbuckling my seat belt, I did the same for Nico and tried standing but I fell back down onto the seat almost immediately. It's like I couldn't feel my legs. Like they were completely numb.

I still tried walking after a while and carried Nico in my arms, not wanting to take any risks of him being hurt or even worse. With my wobbly legs, I managed to walk towards Rhoda, who had her entire head covered in blood, and bent down a little, placing two fingers on the side of her neck.

To my dismay, I didn't feel a pulse. Gently applying a little more pressure, I tried to feel something, anything, but I couldn't. I sighed, my eyes getting a little teary. I might not have known her as a friend but she was an amazing person. And she didn't deserve to die like this.

"Are you all alright?" Rico worriedly asked. Turning around to face him, I shook my head and he had understood what I had meant. He walked towards where we were with a slight limp and closed her eyes with fingers. Bending a little, he kissed her forehead and stood back up.

"Are both of you alright?" He asked again.

"We're fine. You?" I replied.

"I'm okay. They had managed to shoot the pilot so I had to land the jet at the last minute." He explained. "I got my leg hit on, but I'm alright. Just a minor wound."

I nodded, "Is there a radio or something that we could use for help?"

"There is a radio but it can only receive signals, it can't transmit." He said, ruffling his son's hair, who was silent in my arms.

"Well, that's great." I huffed, clearly being sarcastic.

"Hey, don't worry too much." He kissed my forehead and then Nico's. "Out of all the places that we could crash land in, it just had to be a forest. There isn't good signal here but I guess we could try walking a little further away. Maybe we'll find something."

"Okay." I said, glad that I gained all my vision and hearing senses back.

"We'll grab a few things and then we'll leave. Clothes, food and the first kit. Try gathering things we could use if we end up being here longer than expected." Rico said, walking further towards the cockpit.

"Momma, I wanna go home." Nico whimpered, shifting himself in my arms. "I don't feel safe."

My heart broke to hear that he was feeling like that. I wish that he didn't have to be here.

"We'll reach home soon, love. I'll always keep you safe. I promise." I kissed his cheek.

But I wasn't sure whether I was telling him or myself. Either way, I had to have hope. We would get home. Safely and soon. That was the sentence I kept repeating in my head, making it my mantra.
