《My Brother's Best Friend》Chapter 54

Today was the last full day we were going to be in New York. It was also Thanksgiving so we decided since we were here, we'd celebrate together tonight.

Dad was out with Hunter and Nick buying food for us tonight and Marissa, Jax and I were currently packing our things to leave tomorrow morning.

The clock read eight fifty one when I threw myself on the bed in exhaustion. I've been up since seven and I was ready to go back to sleep.

"Bro, get up we have to finish packing and get everything ready for tonight." Marissa speaks as she walks into the room.

"I'm so tired." I yawn. "Give me five minutes."

"Don't make me drag you out of this bed." She puts her hands on her hips. "Fine, I warned you."

She grabs my ankles and starts dragging me off the bed, tugging on me.

"Marissa!" I laugh. "Okay, okay I'll get up, stop!"

She stops pulling on me and throws herself on top of me, body slamming me.

"Ouch! Do you think you weight so little?" I cough out in pain.

"Ugh," She lets out. "This does feel nice." She spreads her arms out and sighs in relief.

"How's Nick?" I ask.

"Uhm," She rolls over so she's now leaning on her arm and looking at me. "He's fine, why?" She chuckles.

"Nothing, just how are you guys in general?"

"We're good," She smiles. "Really good. I'm thinking of applying into the nursing program they have at Newton and we'll be together in about a year or two. Everything's perfect."

I smile. "That's amazing. I'm happy for you."

"You and what's his face are still not talking?" She asks, referring to Jax.

"Ugh, why'd you have to bring it up?" I groan.

"As your best friend it's my job."

I roll over on my stomach and let my face fall on the bed. "We've barely uttered two words to each other. It's not like either of us have been trying to make an effort to fix whatever happened."

"What even happened yesterday?"

"I don't even know. He was going to tell me something and I didn't really want to know. I assumed he was cheating but he said it wasn't that. Hunter talked to him and since then he hasn't said two words to me." I explain.

"Mhm," Marissa says, losing herself in her thoughts. "Was he acting strange before we left Boston?"

"No, nothing. Everything was fine."

We were left with our thoughts, trying to find any possible reason as to why Jax was acting the way he was. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.

Marissa and I looked at each other before she got up and opened it. I sat up, locking eyes with Jax as he stood there.

"Hunter texted," He speaks. "He's on his way."

Marissa stood there holding the door, not sure if to invite him in or let him walk away.

"Okay." I say.

He was about to walk away when he turns back and looks at me. "Emma?"

"Yeah?" I say, too quickly.

"We should talk."

"Yeah, we should." I agree.

"You want to go for breakfast? I heard they have really good bagels a couple of blocks from here."

"I'm busy." Is all I say.

"Oh, okay. Maybe later?" He says.

"I don't know. I have to help with the food and set up for tonight."

"Right." He looks at Marissa. "Well, I'll leave you to finish packing." Turning away, he walks out and Marissa closes the door.

"Uhm," Marissa mutters. "That was...awkward."

"This is so good." I moan as I chew on the turkey and shove my face with rice.

"I love Turkey day." Hunter says.

"Me too." I mumble with food in my mouth.

My dad was cutting up his third piece of chicken meanwhile we were all on our second.

"We should do something today." Hunter says. "Tonight, let's go out."

"It's Thanksgiving in New York, I'm pretty sure everything is going to be closed." Marissa says.

"Not the clubs." He wiggles his eyebrows.

"Delusional is what you are if you think I'm letting Emma go to a club, or even you." My dad shake his head.

"What? Why not? You always let me go to parties back home." I cross my arms.

"A club is completely different. Immature men and drinking." He explains.

"Back home it's immature boys and drinking." Marissa says.

"Good, more of a reason not to let you go to one next time." He says.

"Well the club is not an option. Anyways, we can't get in without ID." Jax says.

"How about," I say getting up and grabbing my plate. "We stay here, finish off Thanksgiving together and watch a movie. Tomorrow's going to be a long day."

"Mhm, that doesn't sound terrible." Marissa nods. "We could order pizza."

"You're still eating and you're thinking about eating again." Nick shakes his head, smiling.

"I mean for later." She pouts.

"Okay, I'm going to go pick out a movie." I say, walking out.

"Nothing scary!" Marissa shouts back.

I sorted through the channels on the TV that was in the small living room area. The inside of the hotel my dad had gotten had a home type of feeling to it.

The structure gave it a perfect feeling and look to it. I looked through dozens of channels only to find The Incredibles playing.

"The Incredibles?" I hear Jax from behind me.

Startled, I turn around and face him. He stood there with his hands in his pocket, sniffing his position from one foot to the other.

"There's nothing else to watch." I tell him. I put down the control and sit down on the couch, watching as he follows along.

"Listen," he begins, "There's so much we have to talk about."

"I'm right here."

"I know." He says.

"No, Jax," I shake my head," I mean I'm right here. I've been here waiting for you to talk to me about whatever is going on. Whatever you and Hunter are hiding from me. I've been here the entire time. If we get back to Boston and I still don't know what's going on...I-I don't know."

"It's nothing you need to freak out about or worry even." He assures me.

"Is it about someone else? Or me? Do...Do you want to break up?"

"No," he moves closer, "It's about me." He runs a hand through his hair and sighs. "Remember at dinner your dad brought up the whole college thing?"

"Y-Yes?" I say, unsure of myself. "Is this what it's about? College? If you're not going I don't care, I might not even go."

"No, I- wait, what? You're not going?" He questions.

I shrug. "As of right now, no. I have time to decide but I'm still thinking about it."

"Oh," he looks away from me. "The thing is, I am going."

"Okay, that's good, though. I didn't think you would be going." I say. "Don't take offense to it, I just didn't think, you know, it was what you wanted to do."

"I get it. My mom said the same thing when I told her I applied." He say.

"Where did you apply?"

Shifting over, he clears his throat and looks at me with glossy eyes. "That's the thing, Emma and don't blame Hunter for this. I was going to tell you but he thought it was best to wait until after we got back home."

"What?" I question.

A million things ran through my mind. He wasn't planning on going to the community college back home, nor the one in Newton or in Springfield.

"Jax," My voice cracks. "Where did you apply?"

"Emma," he sighs, "Look I-"

"Just tell me Jax." I insist.

"I applied to John Hopkins University in Baltimore. I'm waiting for a response but my guidance counselor thinks I have a chance."

"Did you guys pick a movie?" My dad comes in, followed with Nick, Marissa and Hunter.

I stayed in my spot, frozen in place. I had chills go down my back, to my toes. I prayed he wasn't actually being serious.

I knew there was a chance he was going to be going away. I knew it since that night at the restaurant and suspected of it even before that.

"The Incredibles! I love this movie." Marissa squeals.

I was now at the corner of the couch, scrunched in a ball as I held back tears. There was a chance Jax was leaving me. He decided all of this on his own.

All that ran through my mind was he never once told me about this before he was applying. I don't know if he applied before we got together or during but it hurt knowing he'd be leaving me.

"Jax, scoot over." Marissa says. Jax moves to the other side of the couch, not uttering a word. Marissa's eyes reached mine and she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.

"What happened?" She whispered.

I shook my head and played the movie. My dad brought a chair from the dining area and sat down besides me.

I cleared my throat and made sure to wipe away any tears that had spilled out before he could see.

Nick sat on the floor below Marissa and as the movie played she ran her fingers through his hair.

I wish Jax would stay here with me and as selfish as that sounds I wanted him to myself. After years of avoiding my feelings for him I finally admit them and just when I have him, he slips away.

I wish Jax would stay here with me just like Nick was staying with Marissa.

I wish Jax could, no, would, stay here with me.
