《My Brother's Best Friend》Chapter 35

The entire car ride consisted of Jax trying to be near me and talk to me but I ignored him. I wouldn't let my feelings get in the way and blind me this time. I wouldn't let Jax be another Alex.

I wouldn't stand by and be cheated on. I knew Jax and I weren't in a committed relationship but we needed ground rules. I wouldn't be kissing him while he still had his lips all over Rebecca. On top of that he didn't even know he was sharing her with Hunter.

I wasn't going to give Jax any sort of affection until I knew him and Rebecca were over. If he didn't want to leave her then he won't get to have me. I have more respect for myself this time around.

I wasn't going to make the same mistakes.

"We're here." Marissa says as she pulls into the parking lot. There were dozens of cars that filled the lot.

The carnival was filled with screaming children all around and the smell of cotton candy followed us throughout the whole parking lot.

As we near the entrance, Marissa and I take out money and agree on splitting the tickets together. Jax and Hunter follow close behind us as we reached the ticket booth.

We told the lady working the slot the amount of tickets we wanted and gave her our money.

"Hand." She said. I extended my arm and watched as she tied a red wrist band around my wrist. She did the same to Marissa and soon after Jax and Hunter once they got their tickets.

"Where are you guys going to be?" I ask Hunter as we finally enter through the gate.

"We're meeting Rebecca and the guys by the food court." He responds.

"Okay, Marissa and I are going to the bumper cars first. We'll meet right right here at like seven?" I reply.

"Sounds good." Jax says. We lock eyes for a brief moment before I look away and turn to Hunter.

"Don't do anything stupid." I tell him.

"Don't worry, I'll look out for him." Jax cuts in.

"I wouldn't count on it."

Turning away I avoid his look and grab Marissa by the hand. Once we are far away from them Marissa turns to me and raises her eyebrow.

"What was that?" She asks.

"What was what?" I act as if I didn't know anything.

I hadn't told Marissa about Jax and I. It wasn't because I didn't trust her but more because I knew how she would react.

"There's clearly something going on between you and Jax. There's so much tension. I even saw it in the car." She explains.

We walked around trying to find the bumper cars as cold wind passed us. I should have worn a shirt under my hoodie.

"Well," I begin. "I was going to tell you."

"No fucking way." Her eyes pop out. "You and Jax?" I knew she would have figured it out. "It's about time! How long? Why didn't you tell me? Does Hunter know?"

This was what I wanted to avoid. I wasn't in the mood to answer questions about what Jax and I were.

We didn't even know what we were.

"I'll tell you whatever you want to know later but right now I want to think about anything besides him." I tell her.

"Fine," She sighs in defeat. "Have you guys had sex?"

"Marissa!" I slap her arm.

"Sorry, I had to ask." She puts her hands up in defensive.

Finally finding the bumper cars we get in line and wait for our turn. I look around and admire the different rides and colors that made the park bloom.

Hunter and I used to come here a lot as kids with mom and dad. I vividly remember Hunter falling as he ran around and split his knee open. He still has a scar to this day.

Smiling to myself, I look to the ground and push back any memories I had. Today was supposed to be a happy day. I wouldn't let anything ruin today.

"Next group." The lady begins signaling for people to enter and Marissa and I rush in to pick our cars. I got in the bright lime green one and buckled up as soon as I sat down.

"Watch your back, Delgado!" Marissa yells out from behind me.

Everyone else around us gets in their cars and buckles up. We wait until the lady gets behind the booth and counts us in.

Pressing down on the gas peddle I immediately bump into the car in front of me. I let out a scream as my body jolts forwards. I could see Marissa to my side and I move my steering wheel to bump her side.

"Emma!" She yelps.

Laughing, I circle around the track and continue bumping into random cars as they did to me.

When our time finished we continued walking around the park and riding other rides we came across.

The sun had started to set already and the sky was painted a cotton candy color.

"Should we start heading back to the entrance? It's six thirty." Marissa speaks as she looks down at her phone.

I look around the park looking for anymore rides we had yet to ride when my eyes came across the unexpected.

My stomach knotted meanwhile my heart felt like someone was tugging at it.

There stood Jax and Rebecca in each other's arms by the ferris wheel.

"Emma?" Marissa waves her hand in front of my face.

I couldn't look away. Rebecca laughed at something Jax said and he smiled to himself. His body was pressed against her back with his arms around her body. I felt sick to my stomach watching them.

I could see Hunter with his friends waiting on the line for the ferris wheel ahead of them. Hunter's back was to them and I knew for exactly what reason.

He couldn't bare watching the two of them together. He wanted Rebecca and I wanted Jax. Both will never be ours.

"Are you okay?" Marissa stands besides me. "What are you looking a-" She follows my eyes and sees Jax and Rebecca.

"That fucking air head. Oh, he's so going to get this." Marissa starts marching over to them but I quickly snap out of my trance and grab her before it was too late.

"Don't make a scene." I tell her.

"Why not? You haven't even started dating and he's already cheating on you."

"That's exactly my point. We aren't dating. He's still with Rebecca and as far as Hunter knows him and I are friends. You can't go there asking him why he's with her." I explain.

She crosses her arms across her chest. "Unbelievable."

"He's still the same old Jax. Nothing about him will ever change."

That's what I feared the most. As much as I liked him the way he was especially around me he acted like two completely different people. He didn't need to change he just needed to mature.

"Come on." Marissa leads the way to the ferris wheel.

"What are you doing?" I walk close behind her.

"We're getting you on that ferris wheel with Jax."

"What? How?"

Before she got the chance to answer Jax turned his head to us as he sees us approaching their side.

I've never seen Jax look so scared and intimidated before. He stared at me as if he had seen a ghost. My legs felt like jelly as Rebecca smiled widely at me and embraced me into a hug.

"Emma!" She squeals. "I'm so happy to see you. It's been a while."

"Ha, yeah it's good to see you." I avoid Jax's intense stare. "How are you?"

"Great, you?"

"Good, I guess." I say in a low voice.

I look over at Hunter who was talking to Marissa and notice how his friends were all eyeing the both of us. Hunter had attractive friends but just like Jax, he made sure to keep them all away from me.

"Hey, Emma." Joey says as he smiled widely at me.

I quickly glanced at Jax and realized how tense he seemed. There was smoke coming out from his ears.

"Hey, Joey." I reply with a smile.

"I barely see you at school, how's everything?" He asks.

"All good, just been busy, you know."

"How come Alex didn't come?" He questions.

"We actually broke up little while ago." I awkwardly say.

"I'm sorry to hear that."

Joey wasn't the most out going person which made me curious as to how he could be friends with people like Jax and Hunter. Joey was the complete opposite of them. He was actually nice and a little more on the shy side.

I stood with my hands by my side, slowly moving my feet as the line moved along. We were next to get on.

"Rebecca, you want to ride with me?" Marissa looks over her shoulder to catch her attention.

"Uh," She hesitates looking between Jax and her.

"Come on, it'll give us time to catch up. Plus I'm sure Jax can survive a minute alone without you by his side." She joked.

"Yeah, you're right."

"Who is Jax going with?" Hunter turns back.

"He can go with Emma." Marissa responds.

"Nah, Jax will ride with me." Hunter replies.

"I think he can choose who he wants to go with, right Jax?" Marissa says.

"It's fine, bro, I'll just go with Emma."

Hunter stares at the both of us before crossing his arms and turning away, not bothering to pick a fight.

I look over at Jax and Rebecca but quickly look away just as I see Rebecca press her lips against him. Holding back my words was easy enough but I knew my facial expressions gave it away that I was fuming.

Hunter and his friend Chris climb into one of the little carts as it comes around and in the following one, Joey and Marcus get on.

As it's time for Marissa's turn she lets Rebecca get on first and turns back to me, giving me a thumbs up.

"We have to talk." Jax says the minute he sees Rebecca is away from us.

"There's nothing to talk about."

"Emma, please." He grabs my hand.

I brush his hand away and climb into the cart, feeling it sway back and forth. Jax sits across from me and the guy working the ferris wheel closes our gate.

I feel as we slowly start moving and my heart beat quickly picks up. I wasn't one to be afraid of heights but I guess being here with Jax made me nervous.

I didn't want to admit that maybe the talk we were about to have would either break us or make us.

"I'm breaking up with her tonight."
