《My Brother's Best Friend》Chapter 27

"I'm not leaving here until you guys tell me where you were planning to go." Jax says, turning off his car and leaning back in his chair.

"We were going to skip school and go to the mall, now can you please let us out?" Marissa pleads.

Every time we tried getting out of the car Jax locked it and wouldn't let us leave.

"Why was she crying?" He questions, looking at me through the mirror.

We stayed in silence, not knowing what lie to tell him next.

"Fine, I'll just tell Hunter to meet us out here. I'm sure you'll have a better time explaining to him what you were doing skipping school." He takes out his phone, unlocking it and begins to text Hunter.

"Wait," I say, stopping him. "I'll tell you just don't tell Hunter."

"I'm sure whatever it is isn't bad." He says, shutting his phone off.

"Remember this morning when you asked about Alex?" I ask, my voice coming out low.

He nods, raising his eyebrows and turning around to look at me. "Wait, you said everything was fine."

I shrug in disappointment. "I may have lied."

"Looks like I'm going to be an aunt." Marissa jokes.

"It's not funny." I give her a stern look.

"You're really pregnant?" Too many expressions have washed over Jax. He looked worried, scared, and for a split second, heartbroken.

"I don't know." I respond. "We were going to get a pregnancy test."

"You can't tell Hunter." Marissa mentions.

"What if she is pregnant? He'll obviously find out." He states the obvious.

"Okay but we don't know that yet. We'll deal with it if she is. Right now we take it step by step." Marissa explains.

I grab a hold on her hand, smiling at her as her eyes filled with tears.

"I can take you guys to the pharmacy." Jax offers. He starts the car and buckles his seat belt. "For your sake, lets hope everything turns out okay."

I lay my head against Marissa's shoulder and close my eyes as my head begins to pound.

"Are you okay?" Marissa whispers in my ear.

I shake my head. "I have a headache."

"Don't stress it," She pats my head. "Gotta keep my niece stress free in there."

"Marissa stop with the baby jokes." Jax snaps.

"What? Someone needs to lighten the mood." She defends.

"It's fine." I say. "Whatever happens I'm sure I'll get through it."

"No," Jax says. "We'll get through it."

My heart clenched knowing that Jax was supporting me and actually showing that he cared. I couldn't imagine how much this was hurting him. To know I could be pregnant with Alex's kid.

"Pull over here." Marissa says as the pharmacy comes into view. "We'll be quick."

Jax pulls into the driveway and Marissa opens the door, climbing out of the car.

"Thank you." I tell him.

He looks back at me and smiles. "Anytime, Delgado."

We walked into the pharmacy with my hands sweating and my legs shaking. I followed Marissa aisle by aisle until we reached the medicine section. We searched through each row until we finally found the test section.

She grabbed the first two tests she saw and we walked to self check out.

I couldn't face having the tests checked out by one of the cashiers. I felt embarrassed enough having Jax drive us here.

Handing Marissa the money, I anxiously waited for her to insert the money and finish paying. I looked around watching to see if anyone had seen us or recognized us before Marissa finally bagged them.

"Lets go." She says.

She hands me the bag and we exit quickly, spotting Jax's car where he had parked. Instead of getting in the back seat again, I get into the passenger.

Jax starts the car and pulls away from the pharmacy. He lowers the volume of the radio and looks over at me.

"We could go to Sally's diner. It's not far from here and they have a bathroom." He suggests.

"I feel like throwing up." I say, my stomach beginning to knot.

"You want me to pull over?" Jax says.

"No, keep going I can hold it in." I tell him.

I rest my head against the window and ignore the temptation to look over at Jax every time I see him look at me.

I close my eyes, shaking my leg up and down. I was so anxious I felt my body heat up from the nerves.

I think Jax could see how nervous I was that he put his hand on my thigh, giving it a light squeeze. Opening my eyes, I smile to myself and look at him.

He was concentrated on the road but I knew he felt me looking at him. It felt like it was only him and I in the world at this very moment.

I had to talk to Hunter about Jax as soon as I got the chance but right now I needed to handle things one at a time. I needed to rule out me being pregnant so I can move ahead. If I happened to be pregnant I would have to find a way to take care of the baby.

Alex would have to get involved in my life once again.

I placed my hand over Jax's and ran my thumb on his skin. My heart suddenly picked up its pace and he turned his hand so our fingers would interlock. The hairs on my arms lifted and I felt bolts of electricity throughout my body.

This would be a perfect moment if we weren't in such a crazy situation.

"You want me to go in with you?" Marissa asks.

I focus my attention out the window to see that we had arrived at Sally's.

I move my hand away from Jax and he moves it quickly from my thigh. Unbuckling my seatbelt, I grab the bag from the floor of the car.

"No, wait here." I open the door. "I'll be quick."

"Hey," Jax says, holding my hand before I could get out. "Whatever happens, I'm here, okay?"

I smile, taking in what he just said to me. "Okay."

Leaving the parking lot and going into Sally's I felt a rush. My feet dragged me to the back of the diner where the bathroom was.

I went in feeling uneasy and a wave of concern washed right over me.

"Breathe, Emma." I whispered to myself.

Taking both tests out of the bag, I made sure the bathroom was locked before opening both boxes.

I reread the instructions twice before finally having the courage to proceed. I took the cap off the test and sat down on the toilet, putting it between my legs. I stopped midway to reach for the other test and continued before I could finish.

Once done, I pulled my pants up, washed my hands and leaned against the sink as I waited for the results.

What was I going to do if that test showed up positive?

My phone vibrated in my pocket making me jump. I pulled it out and read the message across the screen.

Marissa: Am I an aunt yet?

Slightly smiling, I text back letting her know I was waiting. It was hard to imagine what my dad would even think of all this. He was rarely home now so would he try to be once the baby was born?

I was thinking too far ahead for my liking. I needed my mind to slow down.

After five minutes hit I held my breath in and flipped the tests over at the same time. My heart clenched and tears immediately filled my eyes as I saw the results right in front of me.
