《My Brother's Best Friend》Chapter 21

"You're lying." I say.

I could feel my insides tie in knots as I tried taking in what he said.

Jax and I haven't moved a muscle since he confessed his feelings for me. There was no way Hunter knew Jax liked me. I didn't even know this.

"Then go ask Hunter yourself." He says.

I shake my head and move away from him. How could Jax like me? Hunter even knew and still I was the only oblivious one.

I had hoped that those meaningless moments we have shared were more than meaningless. I guess they did mean something to not only me.

"How could you have feelings for me?" I ask, not thinking before I speak.

I'm too scared to trust myself right now.

"Same reason you have feelings for me." He states.

"B-But, all this time... what the fuck." My mind was spiraling out of control.

"This wasn't how I wanted you to find out." Jax says.

"Find out what?" Jax and I quickly turn our head to see his mom standing by the door with Hunter and Amanda.

"Uh-nothing we're just discussing ideas for the project." I lie.

Hunter looks at Jax almost as if they were communicating with their eyes.

If Jax was being serious about his feelings for me and Hunter knew then it all made sense now. It's why Hunter never left us alone together or hated when Jax would be friendly towards me.

I didn't know how to process this. Should I be happy that Jax felt the same way about me or upset because of everything this meant. Jax and I could never be a couple.

"Why don't you kids take this up to Jax's room?" Cathy says. "Amanda's going to play video games on the TV with Hunter."

"We could play another time if it's a problem. Jax and Emma can stay down here." Hunter steps in.

If I didn't know what I do now I would have brushed off what he said but it all made sense now. Hunter would rather us be down here with them then alone in his room.

"Hell no, you said we're playing." Amanda says. She grabs the control from the table and turns the TV on.

"It's okay, they're just doing homework." Cathy says. "Go on up."

Jax and I look at each other, the same guilty expression on our faces as we see Hunter staring at us.

Jax grabs his bag and work off the table and makes his way down the hall to the staircase. I grab my stuff, not bothering to look at Hunter and follow after Jax.

"Come on, Hunter sit." I hear Cathy say from the living room.

As I reach the stairs I slowly make my way up, trying to ignore the voice in my head telling me to walk back down.

My heart was telling me something completely different.

"You can't tell Hunter you know." Jax says the second I step foot into his room.

"I wasn't planning on it." I say, in a low voice.

I sit down on the floor across from Jax and lay out my notebook. There was an uncomfortable silence that filled the room.

Now that I knew how Jax felt about me it made things more awkward. I had a different version of how this was all supposed to happen. There was no awkwardness or worried Hunter.

"You know," I begin to say. "This doesn't change anything."

Jax looks up at me. "What do you mean?"

I hesitate, trying to find the right words to say. "Just because...you know, like it, I do-"

"Just because I told you I had feelings for you it doesn't change anything." He takes the words right out of my mouth.

"Yeah." I say.

"I know." He looks down, fiddling with his hands. "This is what I was afraid of."

"What?"

He sighs. "You not feeling the same way."

I stare at him, not knowing what to say. Did he really think I didn't feel the same way? At the moment my mind was all over the place so I couldn't settle on just one thing but my feelings for him have never changed.

"You know, Jax." I breathe out. "You've always known how I felt about you."

"I assumed, but when you told me that you didn't I started believing that."

I shake my head. "I was protecting myself and everyone else who would get hurt in the process if we let anything happen between us."

"No one is going to get hurt, Emma." Jax assures me.

"You can't be selfish with this. Hunter is your best friend and I have a boyfriend so do you." I say.

"I have a girlfriend." He says, a sly smile appearing on his face.

"Jax." My voice comes out serious.

"I know, I know I'm sorry." He says. "To be fair though, Alex is barely in your life."

When I gave him a confused look he continues. "He's rarely around."

"That's not true." I say, quickly. I knew he was right deep down.

"You know I'm right." He says.

"He's just busy and so am I. We go to different schools and he works a lot." I defend.

Rolling his eyes, he unzips his bag and begins to take out his notebook.

"Anyways, like I said, this doesn't c-"

"This doesn't change anything." Jax smirks, cutting me off. "We'll see how long you last before you throw yourself at me."

My eyes shoot out, gasping at what he said. "Yeah, right because it was me who couldn't stay away at Kevin's party."

"If I remember clearly you were about to kiss me before we were rudely interrupted." Jax says.

Moving our books out of the way he moves closer to me and smirks. "Why don't we finish where we left off?"

His face was so close to mine my heart beat picked up, I could feel my hands become sweaty. He brings his hand to my cheek and moves my hair away from my face.

Just as I see him close his eyes, he moves in and I grab his cheeks with both my hands. I move aside and press my lips against his ear, nibbling on it.

"And you thought I would be the first one to throw myself at you." I whisper. "Mark my words, Jax...I'm not like the girls you bring home every other night."
