《My Brother's Best Friend》Chapter 19

I was sitting in spanish class, ten minutes in when the door bursts open. Everyone's attention is drawn away from the teacher and goes to Jax who stood there with a sly smile.
"Sorry, I got lost." He says to Mr. Brown.
He shakes his head in disapproval and tells Jax to take a seat. There were multiple empty seats including one next to me. With so many options I knew when he came towards me he had chosen to sit next to me.
"Hey." I let out, not thinking of what I was doing.
Jax looks at me, looks away, and looks back. He seemed to be deciding if to speak to me or ignore me but by the look in his face I had gotten the message.
Without a second thought I looked away from him and tried ignoring the feeling in my chest. A feeling of hurt because I wanted the Jax from last weekend back.
I knew I wasn't getting him back.
"Before class ends I want you guys to partner up with someone." Mr. brown begins explaining. "You will have to create a power point together and pick any spanish speaking country to base it on. You must include the types of food found in your country, music, style, and so on."
There were groans and sounds of frustration coming from all around the room.
Mr. Brown rolls his eyes. "I know, it's so hard wow. On here is everything else you'll have to include. It's due next week so please, choose your partners carefully."
He goes around the room, row by row and hands out a sheet of paper. There were already students getting up from their desks and choosing their partners.
I only knew a handful of kids in the class and most were already partnering up.

Looking around the room I noticed Sarah in the back. We had math together last year and she was the quietest girl I've ever met. I get up from my seat and make my way to her.
"Hey, Sarah." I say.
She looks up at me, and closes her notebook. Giving me a small smile, she tucks her hair behind her ear.
"Hey, Em." She says.
"Do you want to partner up? Unless you already have som-"
"I'd love to, thank you." She cuts me off. "I thought no one was going to ask me."
I smile. "No worries. Let me just grab my bag, I'll sit with you."
I walk back to my seat and gather up my stuff. I could feel Jax staring at me from the corner of my eye. Just as I was about to walk back to Sarah Jax grabs my arm and pulls me back, stepping in front of me.
"What are you doing?" I pull my arm back and step back from him. I couldn't help notice how good he looked today.
His hair slid back like usual, his eyes shinning a deep ocean blue, and his pink full lips catching my attention.
"You're my partner." He says.
"Uhm, no I'm working with Sarah."
"Well, now you're working with me." He demands.
I chuckle. "You really think after ignoring me the whole class period and forcing me into working with you is going to make me do what you say?"
"Uh...yes?" He lets out in a questioning way.
"Get out of my way, Jax." I huff.
I try moving around him but he blocks me from doing so. Every direction I moved in he followed along.
"Oh my gosh, why does it matter who I work with? Just move!" I raise my voice this time becoming more irritated.

"I need help." He says.
"So go ask someone else, you're not my problem."
"Is there a problem other there ?" Mr. Brown calls out from his desk.
Jax shakes his head. "All good."
Before I could say anything, Jax turns around to face Sarah.
"Hey, Sarah you don't mind if Emma works with me right?" He says.
Her face falls immediately looking between Jax and I. Her frown is quickly replaced by a small smile.
"Oh, of course, I don't mind. It's totally fine." She says.
"Perfect." Jax turns back to face me with a grin plastered on his face.
"You're a dick." I spat out.
"But you like that." He winks.

Excitement filled my heart as I heard the last bell of the day ring, signaling my school day was over.
I walked out of the school and headed towards Hunter's car. He was leaning against the drivers door with Jax on the other side.
"I'm going to Jax's house if you want to come. Dad isn't home and you'll have to take the bus if you're not coming." Hunter says as he sees me.
"I'm sure Emma has homework or a project to start anyways, might as well tag along." Jax smirks.
Opening the door, I get in the back and ignore Jax's smirk. Hunter gets in, followed by Jax and he starts the car.
"Remember that chick Kayla I told you about?" Jax says, looking at Hunter.
"Yeah, what ever happened with her?" Hunter asks.
"She texted me this morning she wanted us to go over. She said her friend will be there." He says. I could practically see the smirk on his face.
I see Hunter's head shake. "Isn't Rebecca stopping by tonight?"
"Fuck." Jax mutters under his breath. "I'll tell them tomorrow then."
I shake my head in disbelief and scoff to myself. He just got Rebecca back and this is what he does.
"Is there something you have to say?" Jax turns his head back to me.
"Nope, nothing at all."
"Say it, Delgado. You look like you have a lot to say." He pushes.
"Fine," I say, gritting my teeth. "You just got back with Rebecca and you're already cheating on her. And let's not forget at Kevin's party Saturday you were all over that girl."
Deep down I regretted saying that. I knew I had made a mistake because I almost cheated on Alex with Jax and Jax almost did the same with me. I was barking up the wrong tree.
"Speaking of Saturday, where did you disappear to? I was looking for you all over and I couldn't find you." Hunter steps in.
Jax and I stare at each other, caught up in our memories as we knew where he was.
"I was out back," He says. "Alone."
Silence filled the car. Hunter looked over at Jax almost as if he didn't quite believe him.
"Back to what I was saying, I- "
"Butt out, Emma." Hunter interrupts me.
"No, you're his friend you're supposed to help him not make shitty choices." I say.
"Why do you care so much?" Jax asks, still looking at me.
I can see Hunter looking at me from the review mirror, waiting for me to answer.
"It's not fair to Rebecca." I say in a low voice.
"Let me worry about Rebecca. You worry about Alex."

The Stormcrow Cycle
Once a powerful and lauded witch, Ba'an salu-Ba'an now lives alone in a cave in the desert, waiting to die. When she rescues an outlander from certain death she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of politics and empire, of heart and soul, but worst of all--of hope and love and a chance at a peaceful future. Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
