《What's Your Diagnosis, Doc?》Chapter 46 - Babies and Chicken

Here I was on a Sunday afternoon in the middle of June, waiting for my handsome fiancé to finish inputting marks and writing up the report cards for his students. They had two weeks left of classes and then finally Gabe and I could start planning the wedding.

But I was bored. I had finished all my work for my patients and I was sitting there with nothing to do. Never as a doctor did I think I'd have enough free time to be bored.

"Gabe! Please, baby!" I begged desperately.

"They're due tomorrow baby, I've got ten students left." He told me.

"That's so much!" I whined.

"Baby, please." He said, pulling me into his side and kissing my forehead.

"I'm so bored." I said.

"What do you want to do?" He asked me.

"I want to go to out, baby... can we borrow Hazel and Ric's jet skis?" She asked me.

"You're in the mood to get into the water?" He asked me.

"Yeah." I nodded.

"Ok, then I promise when I finish this.... I'm about two hours, I'll take you out on the jet skis." He said to me.

"Ok, I'm going to the backyard for now because you're boring." I sighed.

"Ok." He chuckled, pulling me back to kiss me before I left.

I called Mabel, Ari, Kiara, Juliet and Rosalie to come over and Ari, Mabel and Rosie came over. But Juliet was working on some university applications and couldn't come over. I told her to drop Nora off anyway and she agreed to that, clearly needing some peace. Kiara on the other hand didn't seem to be feeling too great, so once all the girls arrived at my place, I told them to come with me to check on Kiara.

We all went there and I found her collapsed on the couch in exhaustion.

"Hey, Kiara, what's wrong?" I asked her.

She looked completely exhausted. She was currently sprawled out on the couch, trying to rest.

"I'm tired." She said to me.

"Aw." I cooed, making her sit up for a second so I could sit with her head on my lap. I started stroking my little sister's hair gently, wanting to comfort her. "How do you feel? You're looking a little squeamish."

"I feel off." She told me.

"Off?" I asked, wondering what she meant by that.

"A little dizzy.... I think I may have overworked myself, or I was out in the sun for too long today." She said to me.

"Did you go view a piece of land?" I asked her.

"Yeah. I was helping with the landscaping design that the client wanted. We weren't sure how to achieve it and where to place the building and the dimensions and stuff. So we went there." She explained to me.

Being exposed to the sun for two long was definitely a possibility, but I had a feeling that wasn't it.

"Yeah. Maybe you were out for too long." I said, putting a hand over her head to feel if she was heating up.

"Does your head hurt?" I asked her.

"No. My legs are all wobbly though and I feel off." She said, making me wonder if maybe my little sister was going to bring a new precious addition to the family.

"Just lay down and rest for a while, Sweetheart." I said, feeling bad that Kiara felt sick.

She nodded and closed her eyes, I just continued stroking her hair and she fell asleep in no time.

I stayed with her, and the other girls joined us soon, putting a movie on. We watched a good chunk of the movie and then Eleanor ran into the house and the door slammed behind her. Making us all cringe. It woke poor Kiara up and she jumped up in alarm. Now she really looked nauseous.

"Ava?" She said, shaking a little bit.

"Hey, I'm right here." I said softly. "It was just Eleanor running in."

She nodded and placed her head back down in my lap, falling asleep as I played with her hair. The next time she woke up we had already started another movie. I smiled down at her and I pointed to the water in front of us on the coffee table. Kiara sat up and grabbed it, drinking the whole cup. Then we just cuddled for a little while.

"Hey, I've been meaning to ask you this." I said to her, deciding to bring up my suspicions.

"What?" She questioned.

"Do you and Vidal plan on having kids soon?" I asked her.

"No." She shook her head.

"So, you've been on birth control?" I asked.

"No. We just use condoms." She told me, turning red.

"Alright." I nodded, feeling more awkward about telling her to take a pregnancy test now that I knew she wasn't planning on having a kid soon.

I handed her a plate full of brownies that Sophie had just baked. The plate was gone in no time, Kiara was definitely eating a lot more than usual. Hazel even brought over a pizza for us and she ate a pretty large amount compared to her usual amount of food consumption.

Hazel sat beside Kiara, noticing what I was thinking and Kiara cuddles up to her, giving me the chance to go get a pregnancy test for my little sister.

I asked Ari if she had any pregnancy tests and she went searching in her bathroom, finding two left over tests still in the bag she bought them in. I went back to Kiara immediately.

"Hey, Kiara...?" I said, handing her the bag.

"What's this?" She asked me.

"I think you should take it." I said to her, feeling a little worried for her reaction.

"What is it?" She questioned.

"A pregnancy test." I told her.

"N-no... we used protection. I'm not pregnant." Kiara said, seeming a little panicked about it.

"I know. But just take the test just in case, and I can go with you to the doctor tomorrow and we can get you on some birth control pills. Those will be better for you." I told her.

"Al-alright." She said, getting up and going to the bathroom. All the other girls gathered and waited for her to come out of there so we could see the results.

She walked out with both of them in her hands, looking nervous as hell.

"What happened?" Ari asked her.

"I don't know yet." She said softly, sitting down beside me and putting the tests on the table in front of us.

"It's ok, Kiara." Rosie assured her.

"It's not ok." She said, her hands shaking as she pushed her hair back.

"It is. It's fine, I promise." I assured her, trying to calm her down.

"Yeah. No matter what the test says, we're all here for you." Juliet told her as Ari came over to hug Kiara.

"If you're not pregnant, it's perfectly ok. If you are, you're gonna have a little you running around, that's beautiful." Mabel said to her.

"I don't want a little me... not now." Kiara sighed.

"It's ok. You have months to prepare, and you have a whole family to look after you and your baby." Hazel reminded her.

"I know but it's still scary." she said.

"I know, baby, I know. But let's take this one step at a time. Just check the results and then we'll handle them." Hazel said.

She checked the tests and sure enough, they were positive like I expected. Poor thing, she panicked, completely losing it and almost having a panic attack, but eventually we were able to calm her down a little bit and when Vidal came after we called him, he handled the situation very well and made her feel much better about it.

I could tell that Vidal wasn't expecting it. He wasn't necessarily ready and he hadn't wanted it before, but when he heard the news, he was ecstatic. I knew those two would make amazing parents. Their kid would be absolutely adorable too.

That excitement was enough to fix my bored mood from earlier. I couldn't wait to tell Gabe the news.

Soon enough, Gabe came to get me and we got permission from Hazel to borrow the jet skis. We had the time of our lives and then when we got home, Gabe and I talked about the boredom I'd been feeling lately.

I was feeling really bored lately on my days off, and I wanted to fill my time up with something. I needed more of a balance in my life when it came to my schedule. It felt good to be more busy with things on my days off.

We talked about how with Kiara's baby on the way, I'd have more to do with helping her out a little and then when the baby came, we'd have more to do. I definitely wanted to be an active part of that precious baby's life.

But Gabe suggested that I invite Jordi to come visit so we could spend some time together like we wanted. When I texted her, she said she could come in two days, but after that, she was going to be busy. So we made some plans and I adjusted some of my shifts so that I was working that upcoming Sunday and I had two days off to spend with Jordi in the middle of the week when she came.

Gabe and I also discussed getting a puppy once he finished classes since together we'd have lots of time to walk it and play with it. I started looking into some puppies that needed adoption and I was looking for one that would fit into the family perfectly.

I really admired how Gabe was so insistent that I find something to help with my boredom. The guy couldn't handle seeing me anything but happy. He was so cute.

That night, instead of letting Gabe cook as usual, I told him I wanted to try cooking us something. There was a little cookbook in our drawer. I decided to try making some chicken and rice. Rice wasn't a problem, I'd made rice before. But the chicken was the hard part. I took it out to thaw and made Gabriel leave me alone while I tried to cook. He went out to the backyard and did some more work on the swing set for the girls.

In the process of putting the spices on the chicken, I almost had a mental breakdown. There were no measurements on Gabe's stupid recipes. I just put what seemed right, as if I knew what that was, and then continued. I burned all ten of my fingers in the process, some more than once, and then I left the chicken to cook.

The rice was ready and it was super sticky and soft, I was a little confused. Gabe walked in after I made some garlic sauce and roasted some vegetables. The timer for the chicken went off and I opened the pot to find really weird looking chicken. I took it out and put it all on a baking tray because it said to bake it for a little while after it cooked in the marinade.

"How's it going?" Gabe asked me, walking over.

I wanted to cry at the sight of the chicken, it really didn't look good at all. I didn't think Gabe's stomach could handle it either.

"I'm so bad at this. Why did I even try?" I asked, feeling the tears gather in my eyes as I attempted to throw the two pieces of chicken out.

"Hey, woah... who cares what it looks like, baby? The taste is what matters." Gabe said to me.

"Look at it." I sighed.

"It doesn't matter. Bake it and then we'll see if it's actually bad. Maybe it'll be good." He told me.

I did as he said and I put the other stuff on our plates, then I took the chicken out of the oven and I felt my heart sink.

Gabe can't eat this, he just can't. It will make him sick.

"Don't eat it, please! It's bad, it's gonna make you sick." I said, a tear slipping from my eye.

"Ava, why is your voice shaking, baby? Look at me." He said, tilting my head up to face him.

He sighed when he saw my tears and he pulled me into a hug.

"You know no one cares if you can cook or not... do you want to learn how? Why is this getting to you?" He asked me.

"I want to be able to cook for you sometimes." I sighed.

"Ok, then I can teach you. It takes lots of work to learn how to cook, baby. I don't expect you to be able to make something amazing on your first time." He said to me.

"I know, but look at it.... I bet no one has ever made chicken that looked that bad." I sighed.

"Evan sure did." He laughed. "I remember when Evan first cooked for his parents after a few lessons with Soph, it was really bad."

"Really?" I giggled, letting him wipe my tears away.

"Yeah." Gabe laughed, kissing my forehead. "Now let me taste this chicken."

I sighed and slid the chicken closer to him, letting him grab a piece on his fork. He tasted it, making me cringe and then his eyes lit up.

"Baby, this is pretty damn great! I love it! Taste it, it's so good!" He said, bringing some to my lips.

I took the bite and then gasped, choking on the chicken.

"Oh my God! Drink this!" Gabe said, handing me water in a panic.

I eventually fixed my choking situation with lots of coughing and some water, and then I smiled at Gabe.

"I can cook!" I giggled.

"Yeah! See, even though it doesn't look so great, it tastes amazing!" He smiled, kissing my cheek. "No need to ever cry over food."

I smiled and let him pull me to the dining table where we sat down and for the first time, ate a meal that I, Dr. Ava Dara, cooked with my own two hands.

I was pretty proud of myself. Lots of good things happened that day, Kiara's pregnancy, jet skiing, inviting Jordi to come visit, and then me cooking and edible meal. I couldn't wait for more days like that one.
