《Hot Chocolate》chapter fourty-nine, misogynistic.

"Good morning."

Becca smiled as I strolled into the kitchen. My head was pounding from my lack of sleep, I hate mornings.

"Hey, you." She stuffed her face with cornflakes. "What are you doing today?"

"School then basketball, then I'm going back to Mom's. You?"

"Meeting up with Sofia and Brayden, I might come back to Mom's with you."

"Alright."

My bed felt even more empty this morning. Probably why I got out of it so fast.

My bathroom was still decorated with some of her things, but I can't pull myself to give them back. Hopefully she'll sleep over again, even if we do keep our clothes on.

After saying 'goodbye' to Bec I threw all my bags in the trunk and sat waiting in my car for Camila. I put on my sunglasses to hide the bags under my eyes and switched on the radio, hoping it will distract me from everything.

A minute later to passenger door opened, "Hey-"

Although her hair was done nicely, it didn't hide how tired she looked, "You okay?"

"Yeah, just missed my alarm." She chuckled, not convincing me.

"That's not like you."

"I know, right? Just didn't sleep great."

Something was up with her. I tried to recall last night's events, but I can't see how that could have had any effect. Did something happen before, or after? Would she tell me if something did happen?

"You need a lift home today?"

"Aren't you going to your mom's?"

"I can drop you home before if you want?"

"No, don't worry about it, Zoe should be home."

Is she trying to avoid me? Did I say something wrong? Was it the hug?

"Oh, okay."

My fingers tapped the steering wheel to force me to keep my hands to myself, and I tried to listen to whatever boy band was on the radio. It really doesn't help when they're singing about romance, but I bopped my head to it anyway.

"You need to drop it, now. Or else I'll-" Katie was sending death stares to Joey and Matthew as we sat down in the social area.

"Everything okay?" Camila asked.

"Yeah, they're just being... misogynistic."

"What's new?"

First class has to be my least favourite. Matt attempted to talk to me and I know I'm being rude by pretending not to hear him but I really don't care.

What a lovely way to start the school week.

I lost Camila after class, not even getting the chance to talk to her as she walked down the hallway with Matt.

Katie was the only thing that managed to keep my head screwed on during second class.

"You know, you don't have to be worried anymore."

"About what?"

"Matt. Camila hardcore rejected him yesterday."

"She rejected him yesterday?"

"That's what I just said. He took her on a date but she just friend-zoned him. He's like, super bummed, but hey, no more competition." She winked.

Why didn't she tell me? Is that why she's so gloomy today? She probably feels guilty and stayed up all night worrying. It's cute but she needs to stop worrying about Matt's feelings.

"Oh. Um, yeah, but no."

"You're only lying to yourself man. He's not giving up though."

"What do you mean?"

"He's gonna ask her out again."

"What, like guiltrip her into liking him?"

"I don't know, but I know you're the only one who can come in between them."

I finally got to speak to her during our third class.

"Hey."

"Hey. Why didn't you tell me?"

"You're going to have to be more specific..."

"About rejecting Matt yesterday..?"

"Oh, yeah. Well that's all it was, I just told him I'd rather be friends."

"Good. Katie said he was kinda upset about it."

"Shit. Well I'm hanging out with him after school so..."

So he did ask her out again. Should I be worried? Is he going to kiss her again? She's got nothing stopping her now, I'm completely out of the picture...

"Oh, okay."

"Yeah."

I had to watch Camila and Matt laugh and joke all fourth class. The perks of sitting at the back of the classroom, I guess.

I followed her to her locker to check up on her afterwards, to see her opening a box of medication. She hates to take pills, she only does that when she's really in pain with cramps or something, not 'lack of sleep'.

"Is it- um, you know. Your time-"

"Nah." She smiled.

"Oh- sorry. I just thought, 'cause you're like..."

"Look dead?"

"Yeah."

"Nope, just tired, I'm good."

No you're not, Camila.

I secretly kept my eyes on her during the last two classes, partially worried she's going to pass out or throw up.

Her eyes wandered across the classroom but never met mine, not once.

We all rushed out of the classroom the second we heard the bell, half the school flooding to the doors while a few strays made it to both gym halls.

I attempted to catch Camila to ask her one more time, but I'd she's up for training then she must be okay physically, so I let her slip, and made my way to the boys' locker room.

"This year's captain is... or should I say, are... Young and Stanford."

My ears pricked up, wondering if I was asleep or not.

Two arms wrapped over my shoulders from behind, "We did it, we finally made it."

"Make me proud girls."

I held onto Katie's arms, smiling as everyone clapped. "Ten minute warm ups and then I want teams, let's go ladies!"
