《Keeping Lennox》Chapter Eighteen

Cassie stayed over the entire afternoon. She was in complete awe of Lennox. I knew she would be a perfect mother.
Lennox began to fuss. It was getting late. Time for bed.
I held Lennox in my arms and tried to rock her. She was squirming and wouldn't lay still.
"Here," Cassie reached for her. "Let me try. Why don't you go get a bottle."
"Okay," I said handing her over. Cassie sat in the chair and began to rock her.
I walked down to get a bottle, and my parents asked me how it was going.
"It will all be okay. She just isn't used to a man rocking her to sleep. She is used to a woman doing it. Maybe that is why she is doing so good with Cassie."
"Give her time, Wade," my mom assured me.
"Yeah. I'm not worried though. I am just happy I have her with me. Cassie can have the job of bedtime routine."
My parents laughed. I walked back upstairs and stopped before I go to the doorway. I heard singing. It was Cassie's voice.
She was singing to Lennox:
"Caterpillar in the tree.
How I wonder who you'll be.
Can't go far but you can always dream.
Wish you may and wish you might.
Don't you worry hold on tight.
I promise you that there will come a day.
Butterfly, fly away."
She got quiet, so I walked in. "That was beautiful. I didn't know you sang." I stood and smiled at her.
She blushed, "you were listening? Figured. I never told anyone I could sing. I just never thought I was good enough to be recognized."
I walked over to her. Lennox was asleep. "Well, I happen to think you have the most beautiful voice ever. And, you did an amazing job. She is out."

I reached down and grabbed Lennox. I carried her to the bed and went over to Cassie. I pulled her out of the chair, and I sat down. I pulled her down on my lap.
"You really think I have a beautiful voice?" She asked staring into my eyes.
"Yes," I said tapping her nose. "Very beautiful. What song was that?"
"Butterfly, fly away by Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus. It is from the Hannah Montana movie. My dad sang it to me and my sister after the movie aired. He always called us caterpillar and butterfly."
She started to choke up. I pulled her head down to my chest. Her father died last year, and I knew she missed him.
"I know, I know," I said rubbing her back. "It was beautiful."
"I know," she said. "That is why I sang it. It seemed appropriate for her. She has been through so much, and she needs to know that the day will come when she doesn't have to worry. She is a little butterfly." She looked at me and smiled, "she is our butterfly."
"I love when you call her our daughter," I kissed her lips. "It makes me fall in love with you even more."
She giggled, "you are so sweet, Wade Bentley. I love you. Now, let's talk about prom. You need to get a tux, and tickets. Do you need money for my ticket?"
I held up a hand, "I already have the tickets. I took a chance and bought them last week. Don't you know that when you have a date, the man is supposed to buy tickets?"
She laughed, "so, you just knew I would say yes didn't you?"
"It would make since you know," I kissed her cheek. "Who else would I go with? You are my girlfriend."

"I know. And that makes me so happy. I am so ready for prom." She pulled my face towards her and gave me a long and sweet kiss.
This kiss was different than all other kisses. This kiss held meaning. It was a kiss where I saw our entire future. Our wedding. Our first kiss. Her, pregnant and beautiful with another baby. Children, running around the house. This is how it is meant to be.
We separated and said our goodbyes.
"See you tomorrow, beautiful," I said giving her one last kiss.
"Same to you, handsome."
I closed the door and smiled. My life was now complete. I had my best friend as my girlfriend, and come next weekend, my daughter was fully mine.
