《Unwanted》Chapter 39

A small sliver of emotion, that was no way my own, lingered around my mind making me confused. I thought that I was scared and sad but I didn't feel like I was. There was reason I should be either. Sitting at a table, eating breakfast with only two other people was not something to be afraid about, especially wen one of them was pregnant. A string seemed to tug at my heart, indicating that something was wrong, and deep down, I knew it. About that time, my phone rings in my pocket and their name flashed as I pull it out. It's Caspian.

"Hello? What's wrong?" I asked after I excused myself politely from the table.

"How the hell did you know something was wrong? I didn't even say anything yet!"

"Just tell me what the fuck is wrong." I growled. My wolf was prowling in the back of my mind, his muscles taunt and tail flicking back and forth anxiously. His sigh filled my ear.

"Our new defense lines had failed. No one really knows how but Gordon somehow made it across the border. Malia was asleep on your house and he broke in-"

"Is she okay?" I cut him off. "Has she been hurt."

"I assure you that she hasn't been hurt but she has been majorly shaken. Kai found her sobbing in the woods and shaking in fear. Apparently he entered your home and left her a threatening note." I growled and tightened my grip on the phone.

"Is she okay?" I asked again.

"I'm not sure, exactly. Kai told her to go take a bath in her room and is now on her way to go find her again. She just told me and gave me the note."

"Update me as soon as when Kai finds her. I'll leave as soon as I talk to Ryland again." A distant sounding, high pitched scream came through the phone.

"Shit!" Caspian cursed loudly through the phone. "An attack is happening, you need to get here as soon as possible." He rushed his words and then hung up.

Malia's POV

A scream echoed through the dense forest, making stop dead in my tracts. They are here and it's my fault. My bones instantly began cracking, a wave of pain and regret consuming my body and I let out a pain filled howl. Darting through the trees, keeping my nose up in the air, I ran in the direction of the scream. I needed to find her.

Another scream sounded off the my let and I instantly changed direction. Jumping up, I slammed my paws into a tree and pushed off to the left, swiftly changing my direction without slowly my pace. Pushing myself to my max, I widened my strides and forced myself to run faster. I needed to did her.

My hearted slammed again the chest, pumping my hot blood, filled with rage, through my veins. My deep and heavy breaths took in the rich smell in the Earth with hints of rotten flesh. The rancid scent got stronger as I got closer, the smell all but burning the inside of my nose. My ears twitched to get close to the noise, the sound of weak, pain filled screams and yelps. I needed to get to her.

I saw the ugly beast clamping onto a young girl's torso tightly. Foaming salvia leaked from his mouth, the white liquid stained as it mixed with blood pouring out of the girl's body. His dark eyes met mine and he swung her small body up in the air and flung her out of her mouth, her body flying up into the air. His eyes met mine and he snarled, his yellow fangs were dipped with blood. In that moment, all I saw was red.

I launched myself at him, my sharp teeth easily sunk into the soft tissue of his neck. I clanked my jaw down tightly and shook my head fiercely back and forth, tearing his flesh to shreds. He wasn't strong enough to fight back. The disgusting rouge desperately tried to escape my grasp but I wasn't having it. With one last growl, I whipped my head back and ripped a giant chunk of his neck from his body. I watched in satisfaction as he died and slow and painful death, choking and inhaling his own blood. My wolf licked her lips, enjoying the taste of his blood. His dying body convulsed and twitched one last time before his soul left his body.

I then turned to the direction to where he threw his victim's body. With one glance of her mangled body, I knew I had come to late. Her insides poured from a gaping hole in her stomach, her intestines grazing the ground and exposed her other internal organs. Her small, frail body was lying in a pool of her own blood. Her eyes that I guessed were once a beautiful, warm brown, were now dull and staring me with no emotion. Jaw slack and open, forever silently screaming for help.

The young girl looked no older than ten or eleven. A young soul that once had so much potential, a long life ahead of her. Her dreams of shifting, meeting her wolf and finding her mate or whatever she wished, we're now completely shattered Her death will forever haunt me, will forever be my fault. Her vibrant red blood will stain my hands for as long as I live. Her once sweet face that is now etched into pain will always linger in the back of my mind, haunting my dreams and twisting them into horrific nightmares.

Sitting back on my haunches, I tilted my head back and let out a loud howl filled with remorse. I poured all of my emotions into the song that I was singing, praying that the Moon Goddess with hear me. I heard my fellow pack members respond to my call, letting out their own sad songs to the moon, even though the sun was shining down on us. I prayed to her that she would condemn his malevolent soul to an eternity of pain for taking such an innocent life away from us.

I had failed her when she needed me the most.
