《Bride》Chapter 22

- Alma! We leave! Amber writes from the first floor.

- I'm coming, I say, rushing out of the room before being intercepted by Gabrielo.

- Stop running like that, please, he says and pulls me towards him. You might hurt yourself and slip.

- You always worry too much!

- That's what you said when you almost slipped down the stairs at home. If I were you, I'd stop right there.

- That was an accident. And it won't happen again.

- Alma! Amber shouted as she stared at me down the stairs.

- I have to go. Bye," I said, kissing Gabrielo, "I'll see you later.

- See you tonight," he said, taking me in his arms and coming close to my ear. I might be late. Whatever happens out there, stay strong. Call me if anything happens, I'll come as soon as I can.

I give him a smile before kissing him again. We part and I quickly go down to join my cousin. Amber glares at me before I wrap my arm around hers.

- Always late! I'm sure you'll be late for your own wedding ceremony.

- No doubt, but you'll be there to cover for me. You always are.

- If you believe that. Why isn't Gabrielo here?

- I could ask you the same question about Steven. The answer will always be the same: work.

- One day I'll flush his phone down the toilet. That way, no more interruptions, she exclaims, smiling in anticipation.

- It sounds strangely personal. Just turn it off without him noticing.

- Good idea! Let's head for the beauty salon. We have all the morning to be pampered like princesses!

So we spent all morning in a beauty salon reserved for the occasion. My husband really thinks of everything! That it is manicure, pedicure, hairstyle or make-up nothing was left behind. We even had a massage and a body treatment. I feel reborn. I had not taken the time to relax like that since our return from honeymoon.

- Tell me," Amber begins, "are you planning to wear heels with your dress?

- Just for the occasion. It will be 6 cm square heels so that I don't strain my back. I promised not to wear stiletto after all.

- Oh my. Pregnancy. If it wasn't for this child, you'd be even trendier. I still can't believe you actually gave up your signature stilettos.

- That's a good sign," I laughed. I have another five months of pregnancy to endure before I can have my baby in my arms. Hopefully, I'll still be able to run around on your birthday. If Gabrielo doesn't keep me at home.

- Life is so hard, Alma," laughed Amber. Meavy told me she was coming later. I knew I had forgotten to tell you something!

- Did you? She didn't tell me anything.

- She called me earlier because you didn't answer her. She'll meet us in the reception room.

The more the merrier. I go up to my room to put on my dress and shoes. I join Amber in the entrance and a driver comes to take us. I go up in the car which stops after twenty minutes of ride.

- Let's get this party started! A voice exclaims behind me, hugging me from behind.

- Meavy! It's nice to see you again," I said, giving her a hug.

- Me too! Amber, as sexy as ever, I see! I love it!

- The feeling is mutual, Amber replies, hugging her. And your teacher?

- I prefer being single, replies Meavy.

- So he dumped you, I concluded in unison with my cousin.

- Not at all! Meavy takes offense. I dumped him because I wasn't interested in him anymore.

- And why is that?

- I got tired of him. Are you happy? Enough of this chitchat! It's time to go show Chinchilla who we are.

I burst out laughing at my sister's nickname. Meavy never liked her and that's not going to change now. Even more after she hurt me so much. We enter the room and all eyes turn to us. I smile at people like nothing happened.

Almost half the people in this room know that I had a relationship with James. And their opinion on the subject is not... Very positive. Even more so because Mila was rumored to be pregnant when I hadn't been in five years of dating. That's part of the reason my parents urged me to stay away from him.

That way, Mila could secure her relationship with James's family, which, let's face it, was pretty well off. Except she wasn't pregnant.

- Alma, it's good to see you," my sister exclaims as she approaches my ex on her arm.

- I wasn't going to miss this for anything," I said, faking a smile as best I could. This is the wedding of the two people who have disappointed me the most in this world. How could I miss it? I even brought a date for the occasion.

Mila forces a smile and inhales before answering me.

- If you don't know how to keep a man around, there's nothing I can do about it," Mila sneers.

- And if you can't keep your zipper up," I say, turning to James and then Mila, "and you can't keep your thighs shut, I can't help that either. Just be careful you don't get an STD. After all, if you cheat once, why wouldn't you do it again?

- Be careful what you say," James threatens, glaring at me. Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean-

- That what? You can't lay a hand on me? I say with a chuckle. Try me. James tenses up without daring to approach me.

- Believe me, you're going to regret your words in a few minutes," I announced. Do you really want me to talk about what happened with Chris?

James blushes and backs away slightly. My sister turns to him and frowns. She raises her eyebrows to quietly question him.

- Don't act so surprised Mila.

- Stop the bullshit, you don't know anything, against James.

- Did you think you'd be the only one for him? I asked Mila. When he was already sleeping with Christian? It's like the saying goes, " Birds of a feather flock together. You've been acting out the story of your pregnancy. If you think I didn't know, you're wrong. Who knew you'd go as far as faking a miscarriage?

- I don't know what you're talking about," Mila snarled, still holding her head high.

- If you say so. We'll leave you to it. You have a lot to talk about, I guess.

The three of us head to the buffet and I help myself to some pastries. Meavy fills her plate and mine with whatever she can find without stopping.

- What happened with Christian? Amber asks, bringing a champagne flute to her mouth. I think I heard something but didn't understand everything.

- You'd better sit down," I say, leading her to a chair.

- What's up? she asks impatiently.

I glance at Meavy, who seems just as embarrassed as I am. Maybe we should have told her sooner.

- Christian, your brother, slept with my ex, James. Several times, no less.
