《Kings of Hawkings [bxb]》Chapter 26

By the time the sun rose, the five Kings were sitting on the benches and breathing heavily. Jonas and Hugh were sitting back to back on a long bench, with their legs outstretched on either side. The backs were supporting each other. Millan had his elbows on his knees and was holding his head with his hands, taking deep breaths. Sam was laying on top of the table, while Rodgers was on a bench and his head was leaning back so he was looking at the sky.
Their clothes were torn and were covered in cuts. All of their knuckles were bleeding and bruised.
Around them were collapsed bodies of those who could not run away yet. The morning was heavy with cries of pain from St. Vincent's privileged students.
A couple of rushed footsteps sounded and they turned their attention to the noise. They all gave their tired greetings to Travis and Jaiden.
They slowly got up and grabbed their jackets before they made their way to the car. They looked around at the damage and without saying anything, they busted out with laughter, even Jonas. They didn't notice the click of a camera and a blushing Travis.
He was giddy with happiness. Not only his friends succeed this night and stood up to St. Vincent's but he caught Jonas smiling.
Jaiden jumped behind the wheel and they all piled in. Hugh was back to sitting on Jonas' lap and nuzzled his neck. He quickly fell asleep in his arms for the short fifteen minute drive.
They parked and climbed out of the car, all of them groaning and complaining. But when they got out they saw the entire building either outside or hanging out of their windows. They were chanting for their Kings and whistling.
"Travis?" Sam asked hesitantly.
Travis giggled. "There was a live stream of the fight. You guys were fucking brilliant."
Jaiden grinned. "St. Vincent's is being dragged through the mud. The entire town is turning against them and the other schools are praising you guys. I seriously don't know how to handle this parallel universe shit."
Hugh groaned. "Shit, there goes my reputation."
Travis shook his head. "Oh no. After watching your fight, everyone still acknowledges that you're a Mad Dog and Jo is a big bad Wolf. You guys were ruthless. Jo - that kick to Jackson's head killed me. I don't think I laughed that hard before."
Hugh and Jonas both complained about how disappointing it was that Jackson and his crew didn't last long. They really overestimated them and got angrier when they fell. Lukas even ran away without a injury which made Hugh fume. Their original targets were anticlimactic so they took their frustration out on everyone else. Because of their intensity, their opponents tried to target them, but underestimated Jonas' and Hugh's teamwork. They fought back to back and completely outshone the other Kings, becoming the stars of the live feed.

But they also exerted a lot of their energy, so they had an arm around each other to support themselves. The tenants all gave them space and let them up stairs and shouted out their praises. But Jonas and Hugh were in their own world as usual and carried on their own personal conversation. When they reached their floor, Jonas faltered.
In front of their door was a well dressed man with a stern face and grey hair. His grey eyes were almost the same as Jonas' but were pompous and filled with contempt. On his arm was a prude looking woman who was meticulously dressed with a sour look on her face. Next to them was a bored and uninterested Eli who was paying attention to his phone. He didn't even look up at them.
Jonas groaned a little. Hugh noticed his apprehension and tension. "Alright guys, get back to your dorms and get some sleep. We fucking deserve it!"
Travis giggled. "We'll have a late breakfast in a few hours!" They all cheered and made their ways to their dorm, giving the small family a confused look.
Sam, Rodgers, and Millan didn't leave and stayed with Jonas.
Jonas glared at the old man who opened his mouth to speak. Jonas spoke first, cutting off any words before they were formed. "Save it for when we're inside. Don't make a scene, father."
His father clenched his jaw but didn't say anything. Travis gave him an annoyed look as he unlocked the door and they all stumbled their way inside.
Jonas sat down on the sofa armrest facing his parents who stiffly stood by the door. Hugh laid on the couch and the others took a seat at the dining table as Travis was making a pot of coffee. Eli took a spot against the wall by the punching bag. His eyes never left his phone, but he started to rub his forearm. Jonas saw the movement. Get your guard up. Jonas knew that his father was in a special mood today.
"I thought that you were out of town. I should have guessed you came back when the air turned rancid." Jonas hissed, surprising everyone but Eli.
Hugh knew a little about Jonas' father and that he felt unadulterated hatred towards him; however it was was still shocking to see the interaction between father and son.
"I thought you didn't want to cause a scene." His father sneered and glared at the other boys in the common area.
Jonas snorted. "This is our home so they can be wherever the fuck they want."
"Watch your mouth, boy."
"Watch your attitude, old man." Jonas threw back, which got a laugh out of Hugh.
"Is this a joke to you, fucking scum?" His father yelled at Hugh.

Jonas stood up from the armrest. "You do not talk to him like that!" His body trembled with anger and his fists were clenched.
His father scoffed, but left Hugh alone. "You just showed the world that you're uncultured, incorrigible, and uncouth. You just dragged the Spencer name through the mud alongside a prestigious school like St. Vincent's."
His mother looked him up and down. "I don't know what happened to you, Joey, but you are a disgrace." She hissed.
Jonas laughed. "The greatest success I have in life is that I do not live up to your expectations. If I did, I would just be another fly on a pile of shit."
"Listen to me, boy-"
"No, father. I won't listen to you. Not anymore. You're a twisted, black-hearted motherfucker and I am ashamed to have you as a father. You and mother can go fuck each other off a cliff."
His father took two large strides towards Jonas and cracked his fist across his face, making his worn out body stumble.
The boys all jumped up from their seats, Hugh being the fastest, but they all stopped when Jonas held up a hand.
Jonas laughed. "You're losing your touch, old man. That used to hurt a lot more."
Another fist hit him, only making Jonas laugh more. "Is that all?"
One more hit with a loud thud. Jonas's cheek split and blood dripped down his chin.
"I was raising you to be a man, an Elite, not some disgraceful street brawler." He growled.
Jonas exchanged a cold look with him. "Hit me all you want, father, but I will never become the man you want me to be. A real man taught me that my body should be used to defend, and hitting should be the last resort when no other options are present. But you will use your fists to subjugate. You 'Elites' are not men, you're bullies. So how can I ever lower myself to be an Elite, when I'm a goddamn King?"
"You do not have the right to speak to me that way." His father stepped closer, putting his face in Jonas', trying to make him submit.
"You're even wearing jewelry like a girl." His father scoffed as his hand reached up for the earring dangling on his ear that somehow survived the brawl.
Jonas easily evaded his hand, can caught his wrist. His father had a shocked look when he realized he couldn't move his hand from Jonas' grip.
But Jonas was a couple of inches taller than him, and had the pleasure to finally look down at this man. "Don't touch my shit, old man. With as many hits I accepted from you, I can speak however the fuck I want. I can wear whatever I want. I can do whatever I want. I even have every right to break your fucking jaw."
"You are not my son." His mother cried out. "My little Joey was kind and sweet."
Jonas scoffed at that statement. "Your little Joey was a facade. A mask conjured up to hide the bruises from your husband."
"Jonas Spencer, you will pack your bags, leave with me now, and meditate on your actions in the your usual place. Then you will formally apologize to the entire student body of St. Vincent's and will be attending a reform school. If you do not accept this generous offer, I will disown you and you will face the wrath of St. Vincent's by yourself." His father said.
Jonas flinched when he heard about going to the 'usual place', knowing he would be thrown in the dark basement again. His reaction was caught by Hugh and his father. Both had different reactions. While Hugh was felt sick with possibly realizing what torture Jonas endured in his home, his father smirked because he thought he won. He even grabbed ahold of Jonas' arm to pull him out of the dorm.
It was that touch that broke Jonas's out of his stupor. His eyes flickered towards Eli who was finally looking his way. Eli gave him a subtle nod of encouragement.
"I have been asking for that for almost a year. Disown me, Clark." Jonas used his first name, already creating the separation of their relationship. He ripped his arm from his grasp.
His father stepped back and reeled in his shock. "You will regret this."
"My tolerance of you is all I regret, Clark. You have wasted enough of my time. You and Denise can show yourselves the way out."
Clark tried to push him and make him step but Jonas was prepared and didn't budge. Clark growled and spun on his heel. He took Denise by the arm and were heading out.
"Eli, sweetie, let's go." Denise said warmly. Her attitude was the opposite when dealing with Eli versus Jonas.
Eli shook his head. "Give me some time with him, mom."
"Eli, he's an animal."
Eli chuckled. "Oh, I know. But he has mentioned that I have some free hits, so I should be fine."
Denise looked at Clark who was hesitating, but Eli was insistent. "Please. I need this too."
Clark nodded. "Of course, son. 15 minutes. If you're not down by then, we will come right up."
Eli smiled sweetly at them and nodded. "Thanks guys. I'll be fine. The air here is toxic, so you should go outside and relax a little."
They glared at Jonas before they left the dorm and slammed the door. His parents were officially out of his life.

Many Minded
Synopsis: Issa Pyxis, Spacer orphan and illegal heretic, graduated from living on the streets to running with a gang years ago, but now it looks like that’s all going to change. Her inheritance, more specifically who—or what—she is, is catching up with her, and on a planet with the Emperor’s inquisitors slinking around in every shadow, nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. What will she do? A cyberpunk story about identity, loneliness, covert infiltration, evil dystopias, and much more! Features: - Cyborgs and cyberpunk galore - This is indented to be somewhat “rational” and “hard” Sci-Fi story - Original Fiction however parts of my worldbuilding are inspired by other Sci-Fi stories (duh) Rationale: The future is cool, AIs are kickass, and questions about consciousness are simultaneously existential and yet unanswered. To me, this story is a vehicle for exploring these topics, and also, I wanted to write a story where the protagonist was unafraid of themselves and where their self is more like a git-repo than a meat computer. Disclaimer: This story primarily takes place in what we’d describe as a “cyberpunk dystopia” with some extra technocracy, autocracy, and religious fervor thrown into the mix, so there will be some “grittiness” in this story. Caveat emptor. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character and other characters in my story can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way they view the world isn’t always objective truth (if such a thing even exists) nor do their views and opinions necessarily reflect the views of me, the author.
