《The Beta's Unwanted Mate | ✔️ Complete》23 | begin again

“I've been spending the last 8 months thinking all love ever does,

Is break and burn and end

But on a Wednesday in a café I watched it begin again.”

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

An annoying recurring sound entered my ears and I almost groaned in annoyance because it was disturbing my peaceful slumber.

I tried to twist around and slam my alarm shut but my body refused to move. I mumbled, moved my lips to call for my parents but my mouth refused to make a noise.

I wasn't able to do anything.

Frustration took over my body when I realized the only resort I was left with was to wake up and shut the alarm myself.

But I couldn't wake up either.

It was like my eyelids had turned rogue and refused to listen to my commands. My limbs felt weak and like they have never belonged to me.

Confused and determined, I tried to open my eyes once again, and this time I was successful. My eyelids lifted just a bit and bright light entered my retina making me wince and shut them close again.

I opened them again and blinked several time, letting them adjust to the light. Once they did, I expected to see the periwinkle walls of my room stare back at me. I expected to see my Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff posters to make an appearance at the front wall.

But that didn't happen. There were beige walls and white rooftop in this room. Boring.

I, at once knew I wasn't in my room.

Gasping, I sat up with a jerk and I was frankly surprised my body let me do it because minutes ago, I wasn't able to move.

I flinched as my muscles felt sore on my limbs and arms and it was like I was using them after a century.

I rubbed my throbbing neck with my knuckles but my body froze when I saw a familiar tuft of brown hair resting in my thighs.

His chest rose up and down as he dozed off with a head on my thigh and his hands gripping my right arm.

I felt faint tingles but by the way it was hurting, I couldn't really tell.

His face was towards me and my eyes softened at how calm and innocent he looked. His face held a serene yet sad expression and he was mumbling something incoherent in his sleep.

"Chance..." I whispered, not really wanting to wake him up. I don't know if it's just me but I am never able to disturb someone while they're sleeping.

I hadn't expected him to wake up. Hell! I hadn't expected him to jump up the way he did. But he did.

As soon as the words escaped my lips, he jumped up in the air and growled loudly getting on top of me in a plank position. He looked alert and his eyes were wide open.

It was as if he wasn't just asleep and least to say, I was shocked at how fast this happened.

He adjusted his weight such that he wasn't putting any pressure on me whatsoever. He turned his head around and growled again at an imaginary non existent as if trying to protect me.

"Uh, Chance... it's just me," I stated awkwardly, trying to attract his attention towards the fact that I was awake.

He froze on top of me and his eyes widened as he gaped at me.

"Y-You're awake?" He stuttered as he slowly got off of me and settled on a chair by my hospital bed.

My body missed the warmth of his body but I was glad he moved. I don't think I was capable of having a rational conversation with him on top of me.

I nodded my head and coughed, my throat felt extremely dry.

Chance noticed it and hurriedly filled a glass from a water pitcher and thrust it towards me. I smiled at him and drank it all up hungrily. Damn, it felt good.

"Now will you tell me what was that all about?" I asked, settling back on the bed, feeling my back and body hurt.

His cheeks flushed as he looked away. "Nothing... I..I heard a sound and I thought it was someone trying to hurt you. So it was natural instinct to protect you."

I smiled again and tried to not make a big deal out of it. It was just his wolf, Olivia. He doesn't like you. His wolf compelled him to do what he did.

I nodded and looked down at my hands. Minutes passed by and no one said anything

I wanted to ask him what happened. How I landed in a hospital and for how long I have been here. I need answers. But no questions left my throat as I continued to wonder if he wants to talk to me in any way.

A doctor (the one who's temporarily working in place of my father) came and checked me up.

Chance left the room and I tried He told me that I'll be okay and exited the room, closing the door behind him.

I sighed and sank into my pillow, wanting to sleep again. I was still in dark about what exactly happened. But screw it! Sleep is more important.

But before I could fall asleep, the door slammed open and a very livid looking Chance came in.

"Why?" He growled, and I jumped up a bit. Gone was the sweet and caring chance from a while ago.

I gave him a confused look and he scoffed. "I asked, why did you have to come there. We were handling the situation, weren't we? Why did you come there and risk your life? Did you know how worried I was? How worried Lupus got? Hell! Worried is putting it lightly. We panicked! Imagine us fighting a group- which wasn't the one you encountered by the way- and just when we thought everything will be okay, we hear our mate's cry of fright. Do you realize how torturous it was, watching you pass out?"

I was speechless as I gaped at him.

"That bloody rogue pounced on you from behind and you knocked your head so hard, you passed out at the instinct."

I opened my mouth to say something but he cut me off

"I get it. I get it you wanted to help but what you tried to do wasn't okay. You almost got killed! I was there at the time. I saw as that bastard pounced on you ..and and...I couldn't do anything.

Do you realize how heart wrenching it was to watch your head hit the ground. When I rushed to pick you up, I ...." He gulped as if in pain, his eyes holding torment. "I s-saw there was blood coming out of your head. I was ...I got so scared...I cradled your head in lap and tried to get you conscious. Obviously, it didn't work. We rushed you to the hospital where the doctor told me that you were almost saved.

Had that I blow been a little bit harder, you could have lost your memory, lost sanity- or worse! Lost your life.

You've been knocked out for 4 days. Four- hellish- torturously long days. I stayed up all night wondering if you'll be okay. Blaming myself for everything. Cursing that I wasted my time with you. I didn't...how could you, Olivia? Don't you value your life as much as I do?"

He finished and I was awestruck by the end. I wanted to say that what I did wasn't wrong and that he was being a hypocrite. But in the end, I had been kind of selfish and that wasn't a lie. No one deserved to see their mate hospitalized. Even if it's an unwanted one.

"You would have been fine without me," I whispered sadly. Fiddling with my fingers.

Suddenly I was hauled into a chest and I gasped, looking up to see Chance staring at me with dark eyes. His Iris was stormy and he looked conflicted

"Don't ever think like that," he growled and hid his face in the crook of my neck. Breathing my scent, trying to calm himself down.

I sucked in a deep breath and patted his back awkwardly. Oh my my.
