I sat on the living room couch, resting my head back and staring at the ceiling while waiting for Vince to get dressed and come downstairs so we could leave for lunch with his mom.
He seems dead set that he won't let me get away with this and he will drag me to that table if he has to, but he will not go to that lunch without me. I'm afraid this isn't the first time he's doing this and it won't be the last. It's happened numerous times. Whenever his mother calls me to tell me that she's reserved a table for Vince, herself, and one of her friends along with her daughter, I have to convey that message to Vince. And when Vince hears that some other girl who his mom is trying to set him up with is going to be there, he decides to take me along.
Why? Because the man simply doesn't date. He just doesn't date, he has no interest in it, he has no desire to have a girlfriend, he has no desire to commit to one girl. Now, Vince is no casanova but with his looks and status, girls swarm around him as bees do around honey. He can have any girl he wants for a night with the flick of his finger and he does exactly that. Whenever he wants a lay, he goes to a bar or a party he's invited to... or not invited to, and he finds someone to take to a hotel. A hotel because he doesn't bring girls here to the penthouse. It's another one of his many icks.
I don't like a lot of things that he does but I've learned to keep that to myself because no matter how much I scold him, in the end, he only says one thing. That I should keep my opinion to myself and follow his orders because he's my boss. That's it. And to be honest, he's not exactly wrong about that. The things he does may be wrong but at the end of the day, I'm just an assistant and what I say really doesn't matter because he doesn't give a single fuck about what I or anybody else thinks.
I lifted my head, hearing him coming downstairs. I stood up, grabbing my purse and straightening out the red sundress I chose for the day.
His mother loves picking people's outfits apart, so looking bad in front of her doesn't exactly do me favors. He walked over wearing black trousers with a black button-up but his sleeves were unbuttoned. He stopped in front of me, holding his hands out.

I resisted an eye roll and buttoned up his sleeves. I glanced up and saw that his collar was crooked too. I stepped forward, still drastically shorter than him, even in the red heels. I fixed his collar while he pulled out his phone, replying to a text.
"She's already at the restaurant," he said.
I stepped back, taking the keys off the coffee table. "Let's go." He walked ahead of me and we went downstairs, heading to his car. I climbed into the driver's seat, starting the car and driving to Malibu Delights, his mom's favorite restaurant in this area. Luckily, the drive was barely five minutes, so we didn't keep Ms. Blythe waiting too long. I had to be very careful about that when I first joined. Ms. Not Mrs.
She and Mr. Graham got a divorce when Vince was just ten and while his dad had custody, Vince is a lot closer to his mom. Mr. Graham and Vince don't see eye to eye, in fact, I can't remember a single meeting they had which didn't end in an argument.
"Vince," I cleared my throat, shifting in the seat.
"Hmm?"
"Do I really have to—"
"Yes."
I clenched my jaw and swallowed down a sigh. His mother doesn't seem to like me very much. She told me once that because I'm his assistant, Vince has trouble getting girlfriends. Something about people assuming there was something going on between us.
I glanced at him while he stayed on his phone, answering his own emails for once. Something happening between us? I highly doubt that's ever possible. I mean, it's true, I had a huge crush on Vince when I first took this job. You can't really blame me, he's a very attractive and handsome guy. But his attitude just ruins everything. Maybe it's because I'm his assistant and I know that certain lines can't be crossed. But Vince and I will never happen in any way possible.
I parked the car near the restaurant and we got out, heading inside. I usually walk behind him, which is why I noticed that he slowed his pace to match mine. He glanced over at me and I took a step forward, walking beside him. "You know what to do at this lunch, don't you?" he mumbled. "Convince my mother that I'm very much satisfied with my dating life. Show, don't tell."
"Remind me how this is my job," I said through gritted teeth.
He let out a soft, amused chuckle. "You never have to do much, darling. Us sitting there usually does the trick, haven't you noticed?"

I blinked in confusion but before I could question him on that, we reached the table his mother was sitting at. Table for five. His mother might not have known I would be joining them today, but she knows to take a table for five always, just in case. He walked to his mom, giving her a hug and kiss on the cheek. "Long time no see," Ms. Blythe laughed, rubbing his back before letting him go. He walked back over to this side of the table, where there were only two chairs, and sat down. "Hello, Demi," she smiled forcefully.
"Hi, Ms. Blythe," I smiled, pulling my chair and sitting down.
"So," she cleared her throat, clasping her hands together and looking at me. "You didn't tell me you'd be joining us."
"I asked her to," Vince sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Mom," he said quietly, "you have to stop bringing your friends and their daughters to lunch with me. I come to spend time with you, not them."
"Oh, I know," she huffed, waving a dismissive hand. "I'm just worried about you. Vince, you haven't had a real girlfriend since college. Do something, for God's sake. Surround yourself with a girl other than Demi for once."
I bit the inside of my cheek, taking a look around while trying to ignore the conversation they were having.
"Why? Demi's great."
I turned to look at him quickly and was surprised. That's a first. I looked at his mom's reaction and she seemed just as shocked as me and even a bit taken aback.
"She's the best assistant I've had so far, what's the problem? Every girl around me doesn't need to be there for romantic reasons, Mom. I'm not interested in dating anyone."
She chuckled softly, "Well, just wait till you meet who I asked for today. Her name is Summer, she's Cindy's daughter. She looks like a perfect fit for you, Vince, trust me. Wait till you meet her."
"I don't want to meet her, it doesn't matter who she is," he laughed incredulously. "I don't want to meet any girls, Mom. I need one girl around me and that's Demi. Because she's my assistant."
Oh. Oh, that's what he's doing. Putting on an act. A little much this time.
"Are you sure that's all she is?" Ms. Blythe glanced at me. "You can't go a day without her."
"The whole purpose of an assistant is just that," Vince replied, giving her a forced smile. "This is the last lunch I'm having with you if you bring another girl. I cancel enough dinners as it is," he mumbled, picking up the glass of water and drinking it down.
Our guests joined us for yet another awkward lunch and were the first to leave when we finished. While we waited for the bill, Ms. Blythe watched me, calculating. "What do you do to him?"
"Nothing," I smiled, "I just work for him, Ms. Blythe."
She rested her chin on her palm. "It's difficult to believe you, the rumors are more convincing."
"Those rumors go around every time he gets a new assistant and last until they cost her the job," I shrugged.
"So there is nothing going on between the two of you?"
He huffed beside me, scoffing softly.
"I can assure you," I replied, "there isn't. And there probably never will be."
The bill was brought in and Ms. Blythe paid, calling it her treat, and then we left. I sighed in frustration as I started the car. "I'm not accompanying you to any of these lunches with your mother again. She hates me and it's painfully obvious. All she ever does is interrogate me about our relationship," I rambled.
"What do you care, Tiffany? There's nothing going on between us and there probably never will be," he said, using my own words. "Right? So you keep doing your job without caring about the rumors like you have been," he said. His words had a bite to them and I couldn't pinpoint why. It's like he was annoyed with my reply.
"What else was I supposed to say? I told her what I say every time, Vince," I mumbled, driving back to his apartment.
"We leave for the game on Friday, make sure my bags are packed and so are yours," he replied, changing the subject. "You're driving, no stops this time. I want to get there as early as we can so we have one day to unwind before the game on Saturday night. Understood?"
"Yes, sir," I sighed, shifting gears and stepping harder on the gas. I don't understand how I've survived working for him this long and I don't know how much longer I can do it. I glanced at him while he looked out the window.
Is it possible that he didn't like what I said to his mother? But... it's true, isn't it? Nothing is going on between us and there probably never will be. Probably.

The Exiled Villainess Returns
(Please heed the warnings above before reading) Reborn into the beautiful but deadly world of Ethetia, she comes to a sudden awareness that she is now Livia Katrina Valentine, a character of a game of a reverse harem she once played on Earth called Aster Academy: The Feuding Houses. But this revelation comes a bit too late. You see, Livia wasn't just anyone. She was not given the anonymity of being a background character, or even the blessing of being the heroine. Instead, she has bestowed the role of being the atrocious villainess. And that is exactly what she had been. As a result, Livia triggers her own death flag event at her debutante. Her memories of her past life have the grace to come only minutes before she is accused of poisoning the heroine, Amelia. But all is not helpless. Via last-minute intervention, Livia successfully manages to avoid having her head decapitated. Being exiled was a small price to pay for retaining a pulse. Plus, at least this way, Livia can finally start to live her life, to become more than just a cruel folly. Her exile should have been a new but unusual beginning to her story. But pitiless reality comes knocking. Ethetia had once only been a background setting in a game. A pretty and still picture that mostly went disregarded as the even prettier characters on the screen unloaded their dialogue, but now, it was Livia's world. As real and wonderous as planet Earth once had been, filled with small creatures with their own wills, ambitions, and needs. Such one creature decides that exile was not enough of a penalty. That Livia, the bullish and jealous tormentor of the heroine, deserves a fate more befitting of her past deeds. One worst than death. Livia's fate is ripped out of her hands. She is forced into a collar, sold to an empire rotten with greed, and placed inside a harem where she is expected to wither and die from the inside out. But Livia refuses to be forgotten. Burning with a deep rage against those who only wish to see her fall into her own grave, Livia makes a twisted promise to herself. A promise that pushes her through the darkest moments of her life and brings to light a newfound power rooted deep inside her. So keen to discard her as the villain she has once been, the little creatures in their own ignorance brought forth something they could never dream to fathom. A beacon of darkness.
