《The baby swap》Chapter 14: Playing pretentious

Zoe's POV
I took a deep breath, frantically running my hands through my hair.
I needed to do something about Alex, I wouldn't have him controlling my life.
He may be in control everything but not me. From what I gathered, he had enough money to buy a judge, he could easily manipulate anyone into getting what he wants. I'm afraid I might not be able to get custody of my child.
He had the police in his pockets and he could easily come and go out of my house, what else did he have up his sleeves.
I needed to do something. That's when I thought of an idea, my dad was a lawyer. In fact he opened an entire law firm.
I'm sure he has dealt with sick bastard like Alex before. He should be able to help me.
I haven't spoken to Reina or Abby in a while. They've both been busy with their lives and seemed happier. I didn't want to bother them with my bad karma.
First, I'd have to tell my parents about the insemination. Mom never agreed to it, so I'll talk to Dad first.
I sinked into the couch, looking up at the ceiling.
I should have listened to mom, maybe if I knew it will be this complicated, maybe I wouldn't have gone through with this.
After finally gathering up the courage, I stood up from the couch.
I needed to deal with this, I couldn't keep prolonging it.
I fixed my hair into a neat bomb. I adjusted my dress correctly before grabbing my keys.
I shut the door making my way to the elevator.
Alex was too controlling, there had to be something legally that could be done to keep him away. I wouldn't have him control my life.
On my way to my parents, I was already practicing what I'd say to them, especially dad. Even though he has always supported me, everyone has their limits.
I'll just tell mom when I can no longer hide my pregnancy.
I stepped out of my car, to the scenery of my parents Mansion.
As usual I was greeted by Lala who was busy sweeping the veranda.
"Good morning Lala," I greeted her coming out of my car.
"It's good to see you," she said looking up.
I closed the door to my car.
"Are my parents in?" I asked.
"Yes," she answered "But they have a very important guest in the living room." She continued.
I walked up the stairs to the varenda.
I'll just have to wait until their guest is gone.
"I wouldn't want to disturb them," I muttered to myself.
I sat on the large couch on the veranda, embedded against the wall.
Next to it there was a small table that had stacks of magazines on top.
Mom loved reading there, it had the perfect view of the garden with the parking lot just next to it.
That's when I noticed the huge Rance Rover amongst my dad's cars.
Dad didn't own such a car. It was the latest model, I remembered the car because when I wanted to buy a new car, I saw the same one, I was stunned by the price.
It probably belonged to his guest. He must have been wealthy.
I waited whilst reading the magazines.
I waited and waited for their guest to leave but he never left.
An hour had already passed and I was getting sleepy on the cosy couch.
'I might as well go in.' I thought to myself.

Their guest didn't seem to be leaving soon.
I stood up from the couch rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. I looked awfully moody whenever I was tired.
I walked into the house.
I was greeted by the sound of laughter coming from the living room.
It was definitely mom's laughter, I've never heard her sound so happy. What was happening?
I walked into the living room, I was met by a few surprises.
Alex was sitting on the couch opposite my dad while mom served him coffee and cookies.
What was he doing here? How does he know my parents?
Most importantly, why was my mum being so nice?
The last time she's ever served me anything was when I was five.
Alex looked up, his eyes meeting mine.
He was dressed in a Navy Armani tux, with a matching tie.
"There she is," he said with a broad smile on his face that reached his ears.
I almost didn't recognise him by the shimmer in his eyes.
Mom and dad looked up facing me.
"Hi sweetheart," mom said.
I stood here speechless, trying to make sense of the situation.
"Come here babe," Alex said patting the spot next to him.
I snapped out of my thoughts.
Mom shook her head at me as she sat down next to Dad.
I walked over to where Alex was sitting, still trying to process things.
Did he just call me babe?
I sat down next to Alex who moved even closer to me.
"We are just so excited about our little peanut," Alex said.
He reached out his head and started rubbing my belly.
"Why didn't you tell us you were pregnant Zoe?" mom asked.
I shook my head again snapping me out of my thoughts. I felt like my brain was having a malfunction. Like it was too slow to process things.
She knew about my pregnancy? What else did Alex tell them?
Mom has always made it clear to me that she would disown me if I got pregnant out of wedlock, why the change in attitude?
She seemed aesthetict by the news.
"I...I," I stuttered.
I somehow couldn't think of the right words to say.
"Now I finally understand why you come came up with that whole sperm donor nonsense. You were just testing us for this news." Mom said.
She seemed pretty satisfied with her explanation. I wouldn't dare contrast her.
"You could have just told us you were pregnant. Alex is a remarkable Man." She continued.
For her this was perfect. A grandchild who will inherits an entire air line, this would help her climb up the social ladder amongst her friends.
"Your daughter is the remarkable one ma'am," Alex said.
That's when I noticed his hand was still on my belly.
"I told you, you can call me mom. Ma'am is too formal." Mom said.
Alex was slowly intruding my life, first it was the Cafe and now my parents.
Whatever plan he had, he was surely a step ahead of me.
Dad remained quiet While drinking his coffee.
"Should I serve you anything Zoe?" Mom asked.
"No, I'm fine." I answered.
She replied with a small smile.
As if it was possible Alex moved even closer to me. What was his deal?
"So when do the two of you plan on getting married?" Mom asked.
I choked on air and Dad on his coffee.
Dad spit his coffee back into his car, he sat the cup aside.

Getting married? I don't even know if I could raise a baby with him, much less get married.
"There is no need to rush them sweetheart," dad said.
"But they already have a baby on the way. It would be the perfect time now before Zoe starts getting fat," mom insisted.
"I don't want to put any pressure on Zoe right now," Alex interrupted. "We just want to focus on our baby," he said.
I was surprised by his answer. Knowing him, he would probably want me in his house to keep an eye on me.
"Of course, the baby is more important," mom reasoned.
Alex still had his hand on my tummy rubbing it gently. I understood he was trying the whole 'I care so much' act but he was going overboard. It was starting to tickle.
I quickly slapped his hand away causing him to flinched.
Mom giggled at the two of us, she probably thought this was some pregnancy hormone or some couples thing we did.
Alex's phone rang grabbing his attention.
He took his phone from his pocket. He looked at the screen confused, probably an unexpected call.
"Its work," He announced. "Please excuse me, I have to take this." He said.
He stood up and left the room to go outside.
"What a hard-working young man," mom commented. "Your father and I are very proud of you," she continued.
It was the way she said it, like it was an accomplishment to have a rich (fake) boyfriend.
"Please excuse me," I said politely.
I needed some fresh air and to talk to Alex while he was still outside.
What was his plan and why was he befriending my parents?
I left the room in the same direction that Alex had.
He was still busy with this phone call. It seems pretty intense. He was pacing up and down on the veranda.
I waited until he finished with his phone calls.
"You're fired!" Alex yelled into the phone before hanging up.
"Just some stupid work issue," Alex muttered.
He placed his phone into his pocket.
He looked up, finally facing me.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
His frown suddenly turned into a smirk.
"I just wanted to visit my future in-laws," he said sardonically.
"I'm not joking!" I whisper yelled stepping closer to him.
"I figured you'd come here," he answered folding his arms.
I couldn't tell whether he was joking or not, but this had to stop. I couldn't have him continue intruding my life.
"I need you to stop interfering. I'm willing to have a civil conversation with you," I said.
"Fine," he answered putting his hands into his pocket.
"Fine," I retorted.
"Will you allow me to say goodbye to my future in-laws," he joked.
I slapped him lightly across his chest. I probably wouldn't be able to slap his face unless I was in heels.
I rolled my eyes walking back into the house.
He let out a laugh. It sounded good hearing his laughter, it sparked something in my chest.
What was I thinkinging? Alex was the most annoying man I've ever met. I couldn't allow him to have such an effect on me.
My parents was eagerly waiting for the two of us. We sat back onto the couch.
"How did the two of you meet?" Mom asked.
Alex and I looked at each other not knowing what to say.
The truth is we first met at the club, but I'm not sure that's the answer she wanted to hear.
If we lied she'll probably be able to see it through us.
"We first met in a club," I answered truthfully.
"Book club," Alex interrupted. "Sometimes I like to take a break from all the yatchs and spot cars and just interact with the real people." He answered.
He really was a good liar, it's like he had everything planned out.
"I didn't know you were in a book club Zoe," dad said.
He seemed awfully suspicious. He knew me very well.
"I had a lot of free time on Sundays. Reina and Abby were busy so I joined a book club," I lied.
I've always been a bad liar but Alex was starting to have his effect on me.
Mom looked at me as if I was her trophy.
"I'm sorry sir but I have to get going now. I have a meeting in a few hours." Alex interrupted.
He seemed so polite, if only he acted like that with me.
"I have to get going too," I said.
If Alex and I could come up come to an agreement for the baby, then there was no use for my visit here.
"So I can drive you home," Alex said.
It sounded more like a command than a suggestion.
Since when were we on nick name basis and why is there Zoo?
"It's okay, I brought my own car." I said.
I didn't want to see Alex any more than necessary.
"Nonsense, I'll have one of my drivers drive your car back to your apartment today." He insisted.
Mom was staring at me, her eyes pushing me to go with him.
"Fine," I said.
"That's great then," mom said. "Feel free to come by anytime," she said to Alex.
Alex and I walked out of the house, mom and dad walking behind us.
Alex opened the door to his car for me.
My parents waved us goodbye as we drove away.
"Your parents are very nice, I'm trying to figure out where you get your attitude from," Alex commented.
There was the Alexander I knew, he was surely back.
I rolled my eyes as I allowed my body to rest into the car seat. It was comfortable.
If I wasn't with Alex, I would have fallen asleep. With him you always have to keep an eye open.
"I must admit, I didn't see you as a Range Rover kind of guy," I commented.
"I'm not," he answered. "I just had to drive in something that makes me look like a family man," he said.
He really was a business man. He had everything planned right till the last bit.
We drove silently as we listened to the radio. He placed the radio on some business station, he was listening to some business reports on the market.
The car suddenly stopped in front of my gate.
"I really have a meeting today, we can talk tomorrow evening." He said.
I nodded, I removed my seat belt moving out of the car.
"Bye Zoey pee," he yelled after me. I turned around to see a notorious smirk on his face.
