《The baby swap》Chapter 9: Baby for a price

Zoe's POV
I blinked twice as her words repeated it self in my head.
Everything blurred out around me. The only thing I could see was doctor Fell's lips moving as she tried to explain.
"What?" Alex finally spoke bringing me out of my thoughts.
Earlier today, I was so excited that I was having a baby, now I don't know if I was as excited after finding out my baby's father is a ill-mannered spoiled jerk.
"How did this happen?" I asked.
"Our doctors confused you to Mrs Morgans here, you both have the same first name initials and the same last name." She explained.
If they were married, why didn't she change her last name to his?
"Is that why Zahra isn't pregnant?" Alex asked.
They must have really wanted a baby. But why? Alex didn't seem like the kind of guy who settles.
"It could be, frozen sperms are a little lazy. It isn't as effective," she answered.
No one said a word for a while as the tension in the room thickened.
"I'm so sorry about this, we are going to make sure we fix this mistake." She said trying to reassure us.
Mistake? This was all it was to them. There was a human growing inside of me, it's not just something that could be easily reversed. It's something we'll have to live with.
"How do you plan on fixing this? I'm already pregnant." I snapped.
At least I thought I was, I still needed to do a blood test to confirm my pregnancy.
Alex turned to look at me, for a moment I felt as if his eyes had softened. He quickly turned away avoiding eye contact.
"You have a couple of options," she started. I knew I wasn't going to like what ever she was about to say next.
I had mapped out a perfectly good plan, now everything was messed up.
"We could abort the child," she said anxiously. "That is if the two of you don't want the baby," she corrected herself defensive.
Abort my child? I thought this place was supposed to help create families, not kill them.
"The clinic will give you a new sperm sample, all payments are cancelled. Well refund the full amounts that you've already paid." She continued.
It all sounded 'good' and easy but I'd never be able to live with myself if I had the abortion.

I'd never be able to abort my child just because of who he's father is, especially and even though I wanted this baby so bad. How'd I be able to love another child if I abort this one.
My baby isn't a mistake. My baby probably happened for a reason.
My hand suddenly ran to my belly defensive. I felt like I needed to protect my child.
"I can't go through with that," I spoke. "The abortion," I clarified.
I've heard of people whom after an abortion they can no longer conceive. I'd never want to end up like that.
The room was silent again.
I know I was probably making Dr Fell's job a lot harder.
Alex would probably force me to go through with the abortion. He thought too highly of himself to want to have a baby with me.
"I'm going to sue this clinic. I'll make sure it never opens again." Alex threatened.
With all the catastrophe, not once did Zahra speak. I could imagine the pain she felt, no one deserved that even if their husband was a manwhore.
"Please sir, it doesn't have to come to that." Dr Fell pleaded.
I could tell things were about to get really ugly. I didn't want to be in here. Ever since I was a child, when ever there was conflict I'd walk away.
"Please excuse me," I uttered. I don't know if any of them heard me, the tension seemed louder.
I got up from my seat and left the room.
I had everything planned out, I even had a list of everything that could have possibly gone wrong but I had never expected this.
There were so many uncertainties. What was going to happen next, and what future did my baby have?
I didn't want to abort my child, to Alex this was probably a inconvenience that needed to be terminated.
I speed walked out of the clinic. I needed to get out of here and hopefully never return.
I was going to do whatever it takes to keep my baby, I'd even move to another country if I had to.
I frantically fumbled for my car keys in my purse. My hands were shaking, I couldn't get a grip of my keys.
Once I had, I opened my car door quickly rushing into my car. I threw my purse on the passagers seat beside me.

Through my Ray view mirror, I noticed Alex rushing out of the clinic from a distance.
I needed to get as far away from him as possible.
As I drove out of the parking lot, Alex waved out his hand yelling for me to stop.
But I didn't stop, I just couldn't.
Right now, I was too stressed out and could hardly think.
Whenever I felt too stressed, I'd always do something else to distract myself. I needed to work.
Today was Saturday which meant the cafe would be swarmed with customers so they might need my help.
Whenever there were too many customers and I wasn't too busy, I'd help out with the tables. I didn't mind waitressing. In fact, my first job was as a waitress.
Driving to the cafe, the traffic had slowed down. It didn't take as much time to drive to the cafe as it had this morning to drive to the clinic.
I had to park my car nearly a block away. The allocated parking lot outside the Cafe was swarmed up with cars and customers going in and out. This is why I always arrived early so I would get a parking space.
I walked to the cafe my, feet stamping against the concrete.
Walking was therapeutical for me, it always calmed me down.
I know this should be my last concern but I was really looking forward to my baby having blue eyes, now my baby is stuck with Alex's cold grey ones or mine. People have always told me my brown eyes were pretty but I knew better than to believe them.
I walked into the cafe surprised by the number of customers. It was busier than I had expected.
Most of the customers were the usuals. I already knew them by name.
Samuel raised his hand to acknowledge my presence as I walked in. He had his usual warm welcoming smile.
He was behind the counter today. Usually, he helped serve the tables.
"I didn't think you would be coming in today," he said.
"I didn't think so too, but something came up." I answered.
"Why don't you work behind the counter today, I'll help Kayla with the tables." He suggested.
I gave him a small thank you small and nodded. This is what I needed, at least here I would be able to sit while working.
On the counter, there was a variety of cakes for sale all displayed in the large glass cake display counter.
We sold the best cheese cakes in town, at least one of the best. It was a recipe I learnt from my grandmother.
I've even considered opening a bakery, but for now that would have to wait.
Logan and his girlfriend Suzan walked into the cafe and straight to the counter.
They came here every Saturday to order cheesecake. It was their tradition.
"Hi Zoe," Susan greeted. "I haven't seen you here in a while, where have you been?" She asked.
"I've been busy," I replied. "What can I get you two?" I asked.
Today I was in a chatty mood.
"The usual," Logan replied with a small smile.
I packed two slices from the already cut cheesecake into a small decorative box with the Cafe's logo on the sides.
Logan handed me a $20 note at which I gave him his $10 change.
"Thanks Zoe," Susan said waving me goodbye.
"Pleasure," I replied.
The small Bell on top of the door rang as they walked out. It rang when ever someone walked in or out, at times it was annoying.
I suddenly felt light-headed, maybe I should have gone home.
After a few sips of water, I was up and ready to work again.
I had my head tilted down when I was interrupted by the loud sound of someone clearing their throat.
I looked up to see piercing grey looking into mine. Those eyes belonged to no other than Alex, what ever his last name was.
I was startled for moment as he stood in front of me. He seemed calm, with both his hands in his pockets.
"What are you doing here?" I muttered.
My eyes widened in shock as he continued staring at me.
"I'm just going to get straight to the point," he said in a clinical tone. "How much do you want? For the baby, a baby for a price?" He said.
