《Rebirth of Fa Wei Lan》Chapter 6: 500 Carts

I was scared. But what could I do when I couldn't bear to watch the white horse beaten. The people at the port surrounded me after Master Bai left. No one blamed me. Instead, they were terrified for me. They couldn't believe that a child that they grew fond of the past year actually spoke out to the grand Master Bai for a horse.
Realizing I have limited time to resolve the matter, I headed toward the main building hoping to explain the situation to the manager before he hears it from someone else. Instead, I found Li waiting for me with his usual calmed expression. He told me that Master Fa allowed me to do as I wish and ordered everyone at the port to assist me in whatever I need. I didn't see grandfather but realized he had witness my bold action. I didn't know whether grandfather was upset or not, and I didn't dare to ask. All I could do now is find a solution before it affects grandfather's reputation.
I didn't dare to go back to the Fa Mansion after that day. I resolved myself to stay at the port until the problem was resolved. Even if I were to be sold, I don't want grandfather to be involved. Sitting at the desk with people staring anxiously at me, I reviewed my father's journals. I kept quiet and studied for the rest of that day, while everyone else nervously went about their own work.
The next morning, people had thought I had given up until I asked that they take out 250 of the 500 carts. I asked that they opened up each cart and display them the center of the port. Many were confused as I begin to put price signs in each cart. When they saw how cheap the price was, they panicked. The manager had advise me against the written price, but I insisted and asked several dozen workers to go out into the nearby villages with flyers regarding the goods being sold for cheap. The faces I saw throughout the port was concern and loss.
By the afternoon, the port was filled with people. After only an hour, a hundred carts was sold but only 50 gold teal was profited. To everyone, no matter how good and busy the business was, it was still a lost when these items were sold ridiculously cheap. I continued to ignore the pained looks on everyone face and asked that they continue until 250 carts were sold.
Meanwhile, several men were observing Fa Wei Lan from above in the grand Bai's ship.
"Master Bai, why do you let that brat make a mess of our business" The men were clearly upset and snickered as they watched the young child walking back toward the Fa Main Office Building. "That boy is actually selling each cart for half of its true value! Even if we sell the boy, we will still not make up for the losses he made"
Many were stunned - some were amused while other pities the child who they already judged foolish. They already presumed that the child will be sold off by their master.
"It seems I've been too lenient on you lately, seeing how you dare question my decision"
The men instantly shut up and stepped back lowering their head in fear as Master Bai eyes flash with coldness.

"Get back to work"
The men quickly left as ordered.
"Grandfather"
Immediately, Master Bai expression softens and brightens to the voice beside him. Standing beside him was a very handsome young boy, no older than 13 years, wearing all white with his long hair held half up with a white golden stick. The boy was casually leaning his arm across the ship rail with his chin on his fist, watching the scene below him. Master Bai could see the sparkle in his grandson dark eyes as he watched Fa Wei Lan with interest.
"That girl is interesting"
Master Bai was surprised at the word "girl".
"Ehh, don't tell me you thought she was a boy" The boy turned his head to face his grandfather with a teasing smirk. "She's too cute to be a boy and her name is too beautiful"
Master Bai loud laughter started everyone. Everyone on ship knew their young master was Master Bai favorite grandchild and the only one that could made the old man laugh so happily.
Back in Fa Port.
I was unaware of what's going on when the sudden loud laughter broke out. I was too busy with customers to think further on it. Before I knew it, the long day had come to an end. All 250 carts were sold for 125 gold teal. While I was relieved, everyone else around me grew nervous and anxious. They didn't say anything to me but I could see from their expression that they were disappointed. I didn't know what to tell them to ease their worries; instead, I went back to the main office and continue to study my father's notes.
Early next morning, again, I asked everyone to help me bring out the remaining 250 cases. When they saw the prices I set for the cart, their eyes widened with shock. They assumed the prices were low like before, instead, the prices are 3 times higher the previous day. Before anyone could react, a large crowd arrived. I was not surprised because I knew yesterday's ridiculous sale would attract many new customers. As I guessed, no one even bat an eye to the prices I've set just as my father strategy had claimed.
Everyone was too busy to be shocked that people were actually buying the goods despite the set price. We worked hard for the whole day non-stop and didn't even have time for lunch with the amount of customers pouring in. By the end of the day, the last 250 carts were sold. While I was at the desk preparing the money slip for Master Bai, everyone watched with wide eyes.
500 carts were sold for a total of 875 gold teal - no one expected an 11 years old child to have accomplished such a thing. No one thought an 11 years old child to be familiar with accounting books and numbers. Just when I was finished with the accounting book, I saw Master Bai had entered the building with a dozen men behind him. The old man must have observed the Fa Port from the ship for the past 2 days so it did not surprise me to see him. He was a business man after all.
"Master Bai" I held out the box that contains the money notes. "600 gold teal as promised and 50 gold teal for the horse"

I felt relieved when Master Bai took the box until a man behind him angrily shouted at me. He claimed that I'm stealing the remaining 225 gold teal. I was stunned while Master Bai seems to have a smile on his face as he studied me. I stood silently. I tried to understand why the men behind Master Bai were so upset.
"Wei Lan does not understand. Did Master Bai not agree to 600 gold teal? Wei Lan also paid 50 gold teal for the horse..."
Did I miss something?
"Brat, how dare you steal from Master Bai? The 500 carts were brought by Master Bai, any profits made belong to our Master and yet you dare keep it for yourself"
Again, I was stunned by the anger.
"The Fa Port has a rule" I spoke after a moment. "Any merchant dock at the Fa Port will have to pay one-third of the earnings for tax, port maintenance, and payment for the workers and security at the port. Because Wei Lan has cause trouble for Master Bai, she does not dare to ask for any tax or payments. The 225 gold teal does not belong to Wei Lan, it belongs to Fa Port."
Not only did the angry man shut up in shock, everyone else was stunned. I looked around and wondered why people were so surprised. Was I wrong?
"Wei Lan, you've done well child"
Hearing the voice I knew belong to my grandfather, I bowed my head respectively and went to his side. I hadn't seen my grandfather at the port for days and realized he had purposely let me do what I wanted. I had been ashamed to show my face at the Fa Mansion because of the trouble I've caused. Now that grandfather is here, I felt nervous, wondering if he was angry.
"Gr_ grandfather, please forgive Wei Lan"
I didn't expect to hear grandfather soft chuckled, nor did I expect his gentle pats on my head.
"Bai Yu, this should be enough, do not bully my granddaughter any more than this"
"Granddaughter!?"
Everyone but Bai Yu, his grandson, and Li who stood behind He Long shouted out in shock.
"Old friend" Bai Yu laughed with friendly eyes. "Today my eyes are open; you had hid such a treasure like this. Truly, your granddaughter impresses me greatly"
I wasn't sure what was happening, but I kept quiet beside my grandfather.
"Fa Wei Lan"
I looked up as Master Bai said my name.
"How old are you child?"
I was surprised with the sudden question. Just as I was about to answer 25, I stopped myself.
"2_ 2 months past 11" I said softly, conflicted as I looked down at my dirty shoes.
"How cute"
When I heard the young voice, I noticed for the first time, the handsome boy standing beside Master Bai. The way the boy was looking at me made me quite uncomfortable. I knew what I looked like. I was dressed in brown robe that matches any other workers at the Fa Port. My shoulder length hair was tied up in a messy ponytail. My face and hands were covered in dirt. Ever since I worked at the port, I forgotten myself as a girl and was treated as like a stable boy. I was not cute. The boy with the pristine white robe and spotless handsome looks was clearly making fun of me and the realization made me angry. Keeping my expression neutral, I did not respond to his comment.
"Grandfather" The boy grinned up at his grandfather who chuckled and tapped at the boy's forehead fondly.
"He Long, it's been a while since we spoke, let's have wine and lunch together"
"Very well" Grandfather returned the polite smile before he turned to look at me with soft eyes. "Wei Lan, go home child. Rest for a few days. You've been at the port for days without proper care for yourself"
Then my grandfather turned to Li and told him to escort me back to the Fa Mansion.
"T_ The horse" I will still concern about the horse that I put myself in trouble for.
"The horse belongs to you, child" He Long said gently before he told one of the horse groomer nearby. "Make sure the young miss horse is well treated"
"Of course Master Fa" The man quickly replied.
"Thank you grandfather" I turned to Master Bai and bowed my head politely. "Master Bai, Wei Lan bids you goodbye and safe journey"
Considering I was told to stay home and rest, I doubt I would see Master Bai sail off so I bid my goodbyes and left quickly with Li.
"What about me?"
My arm was suddenly grabbed and I was turned to face the boy in all white. Startled, I blinked several times, wondering what he wanted.
"I'm Bai Sun, Lan-Lan you're going to be my bride"
I was stunned. No one spoke a word until Master Bai gave a loud laugh. I wasn't sure what was going on but I felt like I was being teased again. Not liking it one bit, I coldly pulled away from the boy and glared at him.
"Don't touch me"
My cold sharp words startled not only Bai Sun, but everyone else too. My usual gentle demeanor was replaced by a cold, frosty glare.
"Sun, you're being rude to the Miss Wei Lan. How could you carelessly touch a young lady?"
But the boy continued to smile at me, as if he didn't mind my glares. Since he was playing with me, I said nothing else and left with Li.
After Wei Lan left the Fa Port.
"He Long, your granddaughter is a beauty" Bai Yu grinned. "It seems my grandson is smitten. Do you think it's possible for us to speak our grandchildren future?"
"Wei Lan is still a child" He Long replied with his usual unreadable expression. "Bai Yu, do not think foolish matter like this any further"
Bai Yu clearly understood He Long words and chuckled.
"Come my friend, I have a 100 year old wine for us to enjoy at the ship"
With that, He Long and Bai Yu went toward the Bai massive ship and had lunch and wine at the grand deck. That day, words spread of the young granddaughter of Fa He Long with the name Fa Wei Lan and her intelligence - selling 500 carts of goods worth 600 gold teals for 875 gold teals. And it all started by a blind, beautiful pure white horse Fa Wei Lan named Yun, meaning "Cloud".
