Zack, Eric, and I exchanged a look of confusion before quickly making our way back into the living room.
"You Bitch!" Cody screamed as we made it into the room to see him drenched in water. I looked over to Sammy who was standing there snickering at him with wide eyes.
"What the fuck is going on?" Kyle asked with a groan as he sat up.
"Sammy?" I asked making him look over to me innocently.
"You better run." I said and he took off right as Cody lunged for his feet. Cody landed on his chest before scrambling up and almost tripping on the blanket. He freed himself and then took off around the corner yelling after Sam.
"Di'he pour water on him?" Kyle asked rubbing his eyes and yawning.
"Yep." Eric said before walking back to the kitchen. I shook my head at them all. Cameron sat up with a yawn too. I plopped back down on the couch and Zack sat next to me.
"Got to say, I'm a little disappointed in both of you." Kyle said stretching and looking over to us amused.
"Why?" I asked curiously.
"Because you guys were barely buzzed. Well I guess we all weren't as drunk as we usually get but you two were the worst. Although with what you drank, I would have expected a little more from you Zo." He said smirking at me.
"High pain tolerance, high alcohol tolerance..." I trailed off trying to think of something else. I turned to Zack to see him already looking at me. "What's another tolerance?"
He just laughed at me and shook his head. Kyle brightened up and looked like he had an idea.
"Cynthia, come here!" he yelled and a second later, she trudged in the room.
"What?" she asked sounding annoyed.
"We need to see who has the higher pain tolerance." He said grinning and I just looked at him with raised brows.
"Out of me and you? Haven't we already established that?" she asked him and he shook his head.
"No, between you and Zoe." He said and she looked over towards me. Before I could say anything, Zack wrapped his arms around me and pulled me back to his chest.
"Were not testing her pain tolerance." He said and I struggled to get away but he just held me there.
"Do you want to Zoe?" She asked and I smiled.
"Yeah sure." I said and continued to try and pry Zack's grip from me.

"No." he said and I managed to half get out before he pulled me back.
"Why?" I asked trying to wiggle down but he just held me tight.
"Because it will hurt." He said and I rolled my eyes.
"No shit sherlock, it's a pain contest." I said and managed to break free and jump away over to Cynthia before he could grab me again.
"So, what are we using to test it?" I asked grinning and she grinned back at me. I probably shouldn't be this excited for pain but I wasn't going to turn down a little friendly competition.
"Shock collars." She said and I grinned at Zack to see him scowling over at us.
"Pain contest!" Was shouted by Kyle before Zack could say anything and a second later, everyone was walking into the room interested.
"Between who?" Cody asked curiously.
"Zoe and Cynthia." Cameron said from his spot on the couch.
"Grab the shock collars, will ya?" Kyle said and Cody stepped over and grabbed them out of a drawer that was built into the wall under the tv. Why they kept shock collars there was a mystery to me.
"You're going up against Cynthia? That's a pretty bad idea Zo." Cody said while wearily handing the collars to Cynthia and giving the remotes to Kyle.
"I think it's a pretty bad idea for her to go up against me." I said with a smirk and everyone laughed.
"We'll see about that one." Cynthia said and stepped towards me to help put the collar on my forearm. I helped put hers on after and then sat down on the couch with her next to me.
"Alright, we will slowly turn them up and whenever you want to quit, just slide the band down off your arm, got it?" Cody said looking towards us.
"Guys-" Zack tried to protest but was shot down and shushed by everyone. I gave him a reassuring smile before looking over to Cynthia.
"Ready when you are." I said and she grinned at me.
"You can start Kyle." She said and he grinned evilly.
"3...2...1." He said and clicked them on. I felt a slight uncomfortable buzz zip through my arm but it was barely even noticeable.
"That's one." He said and I just looked over to him with a blank stare.
"Maybe you should start a little higher than that." I said and he raised his eyebrows at me.
"Two." He said and it got a little more uncomfortable. I turned sideways on the couch and leaned my back up against Cameron who just laughed at me. I looked at Cynthia to see her looking at me like it didn't even faze her.

"Three." Kyle said and turned it up a notch. I felt my arm get slightly more tense but kept a blank face that matched Cynthia's.
"Four." He said and kicked it up a notch.
"Five." He said and I could feel my arm tense more. The feeling zipping up my arm. It was starting to get more painful instead of uncomfortable but I wasn't losing.
"What's the highest anyone's gotten?" I asked curiously.
"9, this thing goes up to 12 though." Cody said watching us.
"Six." He said and I clenched my teeth slightly. I've had worse than this. I watched Cynthia's face and her eyes flickered slightly as Kyle kicked it up again.
"Seven." He said and I smirked in my head as I could see it start to get worse for her.
"Eight." He said and I clenched my teeth more.
Breathe, you can do it.
It's not that bad.
Just a little longer.
I saw her eyes flick down to her arm and I caught her clenching her fist.
"Nine." He said and it got worse. My arm felt like it was being cooked from the inside but I didn't move to slide the band down.
I've gotten this far, I'm not losing now.
I looked at Cynthia's hand to see white knuckles. I brought my hand up and ran it through my hair, trying to look unaffected. She looked up and I gave her a smile. Indecision flicked through her eyes and then Kyle's voice rang out again.
"Ten." He said sounding impressed. I tried to keep it in and stay neutral.
"Eleven." He said and immediately Cynthia reacted.
"Fuck no." She said and slid the band off and flung it towards Kyle.
"Fuck, why?" he yelled as it touched him and he struggled to turn them off. I slid the band off right as everything stopped and looked over to everyone with a smile.
"Huh." Is all Sammy said impressed.
"Damn girl, were you just born with it or tortured until you built it up?" Alex asked and I just gave him a small smile and shrug.
Maybe a little of both.
I glanced over everybody's faces and stopped at Eric's. He was looking at me oddly and seemed to be studying me. I gave him a curious look and he just continued to look into my eyes. I quickly looked away after a second and glanced over to Zack who was also sitting there with an odd expression. My eye brows scrunched up as I looked at him and blocked out the sound of everyone else chattering.
"Earth to Zoe." Cameron said wrapping his arms around me from behind making me jump before I realized who it was. He started to swing me back and forth before I plastered a smile on my face and jokingly pushed him away.
"What do you want?" I asked raising a brow at him.
"What time do you have to go home?" he asked and I thought for a second.
Julia.
"Probably pretty soon, I have to take care of a few things." I said looking guilty.
"Okay. I can drop you if you want." He offered and I gave a small smile.
"I'll drop her, we live pretty close and I have to get back too." Zack jumped in before I could respond to Cameron.
"Okay, that's probably better, wouldn't want to bother you Cameron. Thanks though." I said smiling at him and he just nodded.
"But you don't care about bothering me?" Zack asked from across the room.
"Nah, you don't count. Plus, if you're going home anyways I can just walk from your house."
"Thanks." He said sarcastically. "And not in those shorts." He added with a wink and I just shook my head at him.
Boys.
"Fine." I said and and split second later, Zack spoke up.
"Hey Zoe, can you put the shock collars back?" he asked with a smirk and before I could even reply, Zack stood up and snagged the collars from him.
"You're not sneaky." He said before shoving the collars in the drawer.
"Worth a try, and why would you care anyway?" Kyle asked smirking at Zack. My eyebrows scrunched from a second before I realized why he wanted me to put the collars back.
Once again, boys.
I scoffed in my head but turned my attention back to Zack and Kyle who were in a staring match.
"Shut it Kyle." Zack said walking back over to his spot and sitting down.
"Jeez, fine. Looks like somebody's on their man period." Kyle said and a split second later, a pillow hit him square in the face courtesy of Cynthia. I just laughed at all of them.
They really were quite the group of people.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

The Priest of Genes
Meet Seth, acolyte in the Church of Virtue. He’ll be a Priest like his father soon, he just knows it. Sure he didn’t inherit his mother’s preaching power, but he doesn’t mind being the secondary priest at whatever temple he is assigned to. Just as long as he has a library. Meet this genetics textbook. Hmm, that doesn’t belong here. It must have come from somewhere far away, I guess something happened to its owner. I’m sure a studious young man who likes healing could go far with this information, whether he wants to or not. This is my first time really writing anything, so I hope you like it! Please let me know if I make any mistakes; I have a new R&D tech job at a genomics company, so I probably don’t edit as much as some people. I’m shooting for two thousand-ish word chapters released on Sundays, since none of the webnovels I read ever seem to update that day. Underserved Market! Genre is fantasy, possibly progression fantasy. Maybe a tiny bit litRPG if you wait a while and squint really hard, but that’s the most I’m prepared to claim. Hedged my bets on the content warnings, nothing that bad. Cover art from A. W. Gelman
