I woke up with a pounding headache and ringing in my ears. Although the ringing wasn't from the headache but from my phone that was in my jean pocket on the floor. My entire body was sore and I felt like I had been hit by a truck. I tried to roll over slightly so I could get up and get my phone but a sharp pain erupted from my side. I gasped and let out a little yelp.
I looked down at my body and my eyes widened. My left arm and leg was covered in blood and my sheets were practically soaked. I had blood smeared on my stomach. My side was turning a nasty combination of black blue and purple. I could only imagine what my back looked like.
I was pulled out of my thoughts as my phone stopped ringing. It took a while but I slowly sat up. I looked around my room to see blood and glass on the floor. My vision blurred a bit as I tried to stand up. I decided it would be best to just sit on the ground to avoid passing out. I was still groggy and the headache wasn't helping at all. Once I made it to the floor, I grabbed my phone out of the pocket and turned the screen on to see two texts and a missed call but it wasn't from my mom. It was from an unknown number so I opened the texts.
The first one said 'Hey, just wanted to make sure you were ok. I didn't see you at school today.'
I looked at the clock confused only to see it was already four in the afternoon. I sighed which resulted in another jolt of pain radiating throughout my side. I mentally cringed and gritted my teeth trying not to move anymore. I opened the second text to see it said 'Btw its Zack so make sure to save my number ;)'
I probably would have laughed in any other situation but instead I just turned off my phone and tried to stand up again. This time with more success. I hobbled over to my bathroom and looked in the mirror. Thankfully she didn't bruise my face so that wouldn't be a problem with trying to cover up but I had no idea what I was going to do tomorrow. I guess I would just see if it hurts less and see if I can go to school or not.
I picked up a washcloth and proceeded to wipe away most of the blood. I didn't think I would be able to take a shower so I decided to just start to clean up the cuts. It was extremely difficult and painful to get to the ones on my back since it hurt every time I moved or breathed at all. After struggling for a while and cleaning up all the cuts, I wrapped them up in clean bandages and slipped on a loose fitting tee shirt and shorts. I was still exhausted and could barely keep my eyes open so I crawled back into bed and drifted away again.
When I finally woke up again, it was still dark but I had a little more energy. I got up with a bit of struggle and grabbed my phone. I turned it on to see it was five in the morning. There was a text from my mom but I didn't know if I wanted to open it yet.

I decided I had to and clicked on it. It was a pretty long text that basically said that she left and wouldn't be back for a while, along with a couple other insults. I sighed again and walked- well more like hobbled into my bathroom. My side didn't hurt as much as it did before but it was still pretty bad.
I took a painful shower and tried to dry my hair but it hurt to bad to hold my right arm up so I gave up. I put some new bandages on real quick before slowly walking back to my room. I went over to my closet and picked out some jeans and a big hoodie that would be easier to hide my slumped figure in. I carefully pulled on my socks and shoes before grabbing my backpack that felt ten times heavier. I slung it over my left shoulder. I had twenty minutes to get to school so I slipped out the door and started my walk, figuring it would take longer than usual.
After walking for what felt like ages, I finally made it to the school doors. Right as I made it into the busy hallway, the three minute bell went off. Somebody bumped into me, making me hiss out in pain. I slowly walked to my first class. The final bell went out when I was about half way to my class. I sighed again and trudged the rest of the way to the class. I gently opened the heavy door and stepped in to see my least favorite teacher.
"That's twice in two weeks Starr. Get your act together. Detention." he snapped before handing me a pink slip and continuing his lesson. I sulked to the back of the class not really caring and plopped down onto my chair which I instantly regretted as my side felt like it was set on fire. I gripped my desk so tight that my fingers turned white. After a couple seconds I tried to relax again and lean back in my seat so nobody would notice.
After a couple other classes that felt like torture, it was finally lunch. Instead of going through the monstrosity of going to the canteen and getting a lunch, I slipped into the library. I went to the back and sat down on one of the bean bags. I pulled a book out of my bag and was studying for an upcoming test before somebody plopped down onto the bean bag next to me.
"Is this what you do every day at lunch? Study? Maybe you are a boring nerd." I heard Zack say with a smirk. I forced a small smile at him before looking back down to my book. I tried to keep studying but couldn't as he kept staring at me.
"Are you alright? You look pale." he said worriedly. I don't see why he would by worried about a loser like me though.
"Gee, thanks." I said sarcastically forcing a small laugh even though it hurt.
"You know what I meant Zo. Seriously are yo-" he was cut off my the three minute bell ringing.
"I have to get to class, sorry." I said shoving my book into my bag and standing up with a small wince.
"Zo-" he started to say something but I cut him off by saying "I cant be late, sorry." and spinning around.

I walked out of the library and to my next class as fast as possible. I had two other classes with him after that but I managed to get a seat far away from him. After school was finally out, I was about to go get something out of my locker so I could go home but I realized I had a detention. I sighed and walked to the detention room. I shoved open the door and was thankful to see that Zack and his gang wasn't there. Hopefully they had just ditched school and wouldn't be here today.
I looked over to the 'detention monitor' to see he wasn't doing a very good job at 'monitoring' seen as how he was sleeping at his desk again. I placed my pink detention slip on his desk and sat down in the back corner desk, looking out the window. After a couple minutes I heard the door open. My head snapped over to see Zack and Cody walk in. my eyes Met Zack's and I looks away immediately.
"Well, well, well. You're not as much of a goody two shoes as I thought. Twice already?" he asked sitting down next to me. I just nodded and looked back out the window.
"Seriously Zo, are you alright?" he asked giving up on trying to make me laugh.
"I'm fine Zack." I replied still looking out the window. I heard him sigh but he didn't say anything. After about fifteen minutes I grabbed my backpack and tried to grab my notebook out but as I pulled on it, my pencil fell out and rolled ahead of my desk. I sighed and put my backpack on the ground before going to stand up. As I tried to stand though, my side hit the edge of the desk making me yell out slightly and start to fall to the ground.
Zack quickly tried to catch me but ended up brushing his hand on my side making me whimper again and move away from his hand. I was gripping onto the desk with both hands and was on my knees as Zack crouched beside me. I squeezed my eyes shut hoping the pain would just magically go away.
"Jesus Christ Zo, what's wrong?" he asked worriedly.
"Nothing." I muttered trying to stand back up.
"Stop you're going to hurt yourself more. Just sit down for a second." he said, lightly guiding me to sit on the ground. I complied only because it hurt too much to do anything else. I sighed and leaned my head back on the desk for a second before opening my eyes to see a very worried looking Zack crouching by me. And a concerned Cody standing a couple feet away.
"I'm fine, sorry." I tried to say again but it was no use.
"You're not fine Zoe, let me see." he insisted but still just stayed looking at me trying to get me to let him.
"It's alright Zack." I tried one more time.
"Please Zoe, don't argue with me on this." he said softly. I took one look at his pleading face and let out the breath I was holding.
"Fine" I let out so quietly that I was surprised he could even hear me.
"Here, lay down." he said guiding me to the ground. I lied back and he slid my hoodie up just enough to see the giant bruise.
"Jesus Christ, what happened?" he asked with wide eyes examining my side but not touching it.
"I uh fell down the stairs." I replied.
"Did you go to the hospital or anything for it? It looks pretty bad." he asked so I slowly shook my head.
"Why not?" he asked looking appalled. I shrugged a tiny bit even though I knew the answer.
"I can check to see If there's any broken ribs if you want, can I do that?" he asked looking at me. I nodded my head slowly after a second.
"It's going to hurt but I have to, okay?" he said. I nodded my head as he rested his hand on my side. It didn't really hurt much when he did that but he looked me in my eyes giving me a little apologetic look before looking back down to my side. He started moving his hand around a bit feeling each one of my ribs.
I let out a whimper and squeezed my eyes shut and he kept moving down rib by rib. I didn't even hear him but I felt Cody kneel next to me and grab my hand which I was grateful for.
After a minute Zack took his hand off of my ribs and gently pulled my hoodie back down. I let out the small breath that I was holding and sat up again slowly.
"I don't feel any fully broken ribs but you might have fractured some. You're definitely very bruised though. how the hell did you fall down the stairs with that much force?" he asked.
I closed my eyes for a second and opened them back up again, saying "Well I guess I'm just clumsy like that." with a small forced laugh.
He shook his head but still said "I have no idea how you could be going through a school day like normal the day afteryou did that to your ribs but ok."
I let out another forced laugh before standing back up. Zack put his hand on my arm and helped me up as Cody grabbed my pencil and bag and put it on the desk.
"I've broken a rib before and It hurts like a bitch." Cody said with a small chuckle. "But it healed surprisingly fast." he added while grabbing his bag and slinging it over his back.
I gave them a small smile before saying "Thanks."
Zack grabbed his and my bag right as the bell rang. I looked over to the detention monitor who was surprisingly somehow asleep.
"Come on" Zack said and all three of us walked out of the detention room.
