《The Man She Betrayed》4. Drunken Misery

Would you call it bad luck if you end up working with the same person you spent years hating?

Clara Avery, the girl that I despised with every nerve fibre in my being, the immature, materialistic narcissist who just cares about herself and every other person is a pawn in her life. The girl who can stoop down to the lowest, if it benefits her in any way. The girl who once ruined my life and after her, I was never the same.

People like her don't deserve to get a happy ending so my frustration was justified when I watched her getting appointed as the secretary of the CEO in this multinational company. Besides, even if God has written a perfect story for her, why did she end up in this same place as mine?

After six years of messing with my mind, why is she back? Why can't she just leave me alone?

And after doing so, she had the nerve to ask me if this job was a revenge.

Revenge? Like I would waste one more second of my life on this self-centered, spoilt brat.

After I returned to my office, I flopped on my chair, breathing hard until my heartbeat slowed down. To add to my misery, her office was right in front of mine and through the glass window, I could caught her reflection sitting on the desk and looking around awkwardly, acting like she was the most innocent girl in the world.

Fuck me.

She had changed a lot look wise, her face didn't look caked with makeup like it used to do, her straightened hair were now styled in her natural waves and the dress she was wearing was decent and mature. But I was sure her personality was still the same, like the cunning fox she was.

Because of her, I couldn't focus on my work anymore. Like I had expected, she was still a trouble for me. One glance at her stupid face and bam, there goes my attention span.

The face I used to adore.

I spent the next two hours thinking about her, to a point that I was minutes away from pulling my hair. Her presence in this building was suffocating me, even though I had closed the curtains and now, I wasn't even watching her.

When I couldn't contain my irritation anymore, I texted Amber that I had to leave because of a preoccupation and walked out of my office during the lunchtime. I was about to storm off from the hallway when my eyes fixated on her, sitting in her office chair, making notes of the files instead of having lunch.

The Clara I knew wouldn't like to sit alone during lunch time. She would prefer socialising to working alone in an office any day. Seeing her like this irked me and I averted my eyes to stop her face from flashing in front of my eyes.

I need to get away from this girl.

Leaving the office, I walked towards the parking lot where my driver was waiting for me. Once I sat inside the car and he revved the engine, my breathing turned even and I let out a relaxing sigh.

...

Once my fourth drink finished, I asked the bartender to pour another one. Right now, my mind was a mess and the only way to clear it was drinking. I knew I was going to regret it tomorrow morning, considering I had to go to office in my hangover state.

The bartender slid the glass towards me and before I could hold it, someone gripped the glass and pulled it away from me.

"Excuse me?" I hissed but stopped when my eyes fell on the person glaring down at me. "Ugh. Of course, it's you." I rolled my eyes and attempted to snatch the glass but she placed it too far away from my access.

"Stand up, Moron." she said and I narrowed my eyes at her. She tried to pull me up by grasping my fingers but I was too heavy for her petite built.

"For someone so small, you sure try your best." I grinned at her in my drunken state.

"Fuck off." she waved at me and flicked her black, wavy hair in a dramatic way but because of their short length, she looked rather funny.

"Wait! Are you stalking me Crystal Oscar?" I teased her and she snickered at me, taking a sip of my drink.

"Your Dad told me your whereabouts Aaron Vincent." she threw daggers at me with her grey eyes filled with mischief. "What are you doing here drinking to oblivion? Aren't you supposed to go to office tomorrow?"

"I don't want to go to that office."

"Really? Aaron Vincent who hasn't taken a day off since he started working in this company, doesn't want to go tomorrow? That's strange." she commented and I threw another eye-roll towards her way.

Her hands moved towards my drink again but I wrapped my fingers around her wrist and pulled her along myself.

"Where are you taking me, you weirdo?" she screamed behind me.

Groaning at her drama, I turned around and placed my finger on her lips. "Shush Drama queen, you're taking me home."

"I am not your driver, asshole." she placed her hands on her waist and raised her eyebrows.

"Do I look like I can drive?" I asked, hinting towards my drunken state and her mouth formed an 'o'. Finally she stopped bickering and moved in front of me, towards the parking lot of the club.

In the car, her eyes kept flickering towards me but she didn't ask anything. I knew that she knew something was off, but I guess she postponed the inquiry till we reached my house. Thankfully, being with Crystal took my mind off Clara for sometime and I was finally able to focus on something other than that selfish girl.

Once we reached my house, both of us tiptoed towards my room before my Dad could catch us in this state. Well, by us, I meant me.

"Now, Aaron Gregory Vincent, tell me what's wrong with your flat ass?" she asked once we were inside my room. Ignoring her question, I stripped out of my shirt and jumped on my bed.

"First of all, this ass ain't flat." I smirked. "Secondly, I am fine." I said and pulled my duvet upto my neck.

"You can't lie to your best friend." she muttered angrily.

"I think I just did." I smirked and her face reddened with anger. If it was upto her, she would have smothered me with the pillow. Letting out a deep groan, she pulled out a T-shirt and trouser from my cupboard and went into the bathroom, emerging few minutes later in my clothes.

"Don't." I slapped her hand away when she jumped in bed with me and poked my cheeks.

"Then tell me."

"There is nothing to tell." I fumed but she didn't stop poking my cheeks. Even when I threw my most menacing glare towards her which is usually enough to silence all clients. "Crystal..." I groaned again, almost in begging voice but she didn't stop.

At last, I threw the duvet off me and shifted into sitting position to finally tell her the reason of my mood. "Fine, she is back."

"Who's back? One of your fuck buddy? Don't tell me you got someone pregnant. For God's sake Aaron.."

"Clara is back." I cut her sentence in between. It threw her off-guard and she immediately sat down, staring at me with her big, grey orbs.

"Are you kidding?" she asked and I shook my head in no.

"She has started working in my office." I told her and her eyes widened even more, almost like saucers.

"Fuck." she cursed, collapsing back on my bed.

"Fuck, indeed." I agreed, laying beside her in a way that my head was resting in the crook of her neck. Ignoring her baffled state, I closed my eyes and waited for sleep to envelop me.
