《My Pet Mate》Chapter 44

*Adam's POV*

"Alpha, you should rest." Isa says as I'm searching. Those words have quickly become my least favorite.

I sigh and look at her. 'How long has it been?' I ask Cade.

'I don't know, but I know at least one night has passed.' He responds.

I guess it is time to rest then. I shift back and quickly put on some shorts. It's freezing, but I couldn't care less.

Isa hands me a bottle of water and I nod to her, "Thanks."

"You should try to get some sleep. We will keep searching." Isa says as she looks at her mate. Will was in wolf form. He is attached to Isa by the hip, especially when Isa is close to me. Ever since I snapped at him, he has been cautious around me, not that I blame him.

I tell the group that I'll be back and head off towards the apartment. When I get home there are a few phone calls waiting for me.

I haven't been to work this week. I just called in sick, which didn't impress the higher ups. They can suck it though, my mate is gone, work is the last of my problems.

Anna's work has been calling me too. I called them on Monday telling them Anna wouldn't be at work this week, and they had some questions. Eventually, Isa called in pretending to be Anna, and it worked.

I'm glad it's Christmas break next week. At least then we won't have to think about work, since I already have my vacation days locked in.

I enter the apartment and take in Anna's still lingering scent. It's already fading, but I'm clinging to it. I don't even bother taking a shower, instead, I just flop down on the bed.

It's been five days now. Five days and the only thing I have on her kidnapper is the fact that they have brown eyes. No gender, no scent, no nothing. It's a mess.

There are plenty of people I know that have brown eyes, how the hell am I supposed to find her kidnapper like this? We've searched the entire place now too. In a couple of days, we'll have searched the entirety of Maine. What then? What are we going to do when Anna isn't in Maine?

I force myself to close my eyes. I had crashed after day four and slept for a few hours. That was yesterday though, so I know I won't be sleeping now.

A few hours later I give up and get out of bed. I force myself to eat some breakfast and a coffee and sit quietly at the dining table. I should be heading out again, but I also know that everyone will try to force me to rest more.

My eyes land on Anna's bag, and I decide to grab it since I don't have anything else to do.

My breathing catches when I see the run down diary in her bag. I recognize those anywhere. That's my mother's diary.

I don't realize my hands are shaking until I try to open the thing. The first entry is about my twentieth birthday, so I know it's my mother's last diary.

She wrote one for every year of my life, including one from when she was pregnant.

I skim through the entries, remembering every single day she wrote about. Every event is still so clear in my memory. Times I spent with my family, with my friends. Me finishing the house, my journey to find my mate.

~

30th of April,

Today Adam has departed on his journey. The journey to find his mate. He's been waiting for this for a few years now. As soon as he turned 16, he's wanted to leave the pack to find his mate. Niko and I have been able to hold him back, but he can't be contained any longer.

A wolf needs their mate, and we can't keep him away from her anymore.

Adam has promised us he'll keep in touch, which I am grateful for. Of course, he has his pack duties. Niko and Noah will be filling in most of them for now, but Adam is still Alpha. His pack is still his responsibility.

He packed lightly, preferring to travel in wolf form instead of taking a car.

Impatient pup. His connection with Cade is strong, he'll travel faster in wolf form, I'll give him that. But it's improper for an Alpha to travel alone like that. He's an accomplished warrior, but a pack of rogues isn't something to laugh at.

I pray for his safety, and I pray for his mate.

I can't wait to see him return to us holding his mate in his arms. I know he'll protect her with anything he has. His loyalty lies with his family and friends, but I know that soon his mate will take a huge part in that.

Safe travels, my pup, I shall be waiting for your return.

~

Has Anna been reading these?

My eyes flick to the wet spot on the paper, and I suddenly realize that I'm crying.

Shit, why am I crying?

I let out a shaky sigh and push the book away. I can't deal with this right now. whoever decided to take my mate now has impeccable timing, since I'm an emotional mess. I check the time and see that I've spend an hour reading, so I get up to return to the search.

I couldn't return to my mother in time, but I'm saving Anna no matter what.

*Jasper's POV* (A/N: 👀👀)

We've been searching for her for nine days now. The entire pack was out and about searching for her. Luna Anna had quickly become a favorite among the pack. Our pack lacks a Luna, and Luna Anna, besides not actually being our Luna, has somehow filled the role for a lot of people. Most of her students have joined the search, as well as some regular pack members.

I glanced at Alpha Adam as we searched another part of the forest. Alpha Adam has a lot riding on his shoulders. He is still rogue, and not having his mate around could make him snap at any minute. You can see it in his tense posture and the way everyone is tiptoeing around him. We'll have to find Luna Anna fast if we don't want to have a Rogue Alpha stabbing us in the back.

He has been calm and collected enough though. After snapping at Beta Will, he must have realized the dangers of the situation himself, so he has been doing anything to keep himself calm. He also makes sure either Isa or Fred are right next to him. Both girls have been carrying silver and Wolfsbane around, just in case they'll have to stop a Rogue in their tracks. Just in case they'll have to stop Alpha Adam in his tracks.

My heart has been pounding the entire time. I hated Fred being so exposed and in danger, but I also knew she was doing this for her best friend. Beta Will has told me he feels the same way. Putting our mates in danger like this is terrifying, but necessary.

I sighed as I had completely lost Luna Anna's scent again. I nudged Fred next to me and she grabbed one of Luna Anna's hoodies from her bag. I took in her scent again. It was slowly fading from the piece of clothing, but I managed to catch on to it once more before heading out again and trying to find her somewhere in the woods.

Hours later and we still had nothing.

I was exhausted when I headed back to the packhouse. Fred was back at her apartment and I knew she needed rest, so I left her safe and sound. I sat down on the porch and sighed; this isn't going anywhere.

Who in the world would want to kidnap Luna Anna? And where could she be? We've searched the entire surrounding area by now. Adam has even managed to get different packs across Maine to help with the search. Soon, we'll have to search outside of the State, and there is no way we'll find her if we have to search the entire country, or worse, world.

I sat there contemplating when I felt my phone vibrate. If was from the new group chat we made with Beta Will, Fred, Isa and me. We wanted to keep an eye out for Alpha Adam.

He passed out in bed. We need to find her fast, he's slipping.

Is there nothing else we can do?

I sighed before responding.

No, the Alpha will have to keep control on his own.

Wolfsbane maybe? That helped with his heat.

That could quite possibly be the worst thing for him right now. He needs to keep control. Him being high will only make it slip faster.

Soon it won't matter. We must be overlooking something...

Maybe, but what?

I was distracted from my phone when Alpha Thomas approached the house. I frowned when I saw what he was holding. A plate with food? Why would he have been in the forest with a plate full of food?

Alpha Thomas nodded and I bowed my head respectfully, "How did the search go today?" he asked.

I shook my head, "Not good, Alpha."

Alpha Thomas sighed, "A shame." He climbed the steps of the front porch, "Well, tomorrow is another day." He spoke as he passed me.

My heart skipped a beat as I took in his scent. Or more specifically, a scent on him. "Alpha!" I stopped him.

He turned around and raised an eyebrow. I faltered and gulped, "If I may ask, Alpha. What is the plate of food for?"

Ray glanced at the place, "You may not ask." He turned to leave again, and I let him. I had already locked on to the scent.

Anna's scent.

I looked back at my phone as it vibrated once again. The group chat was filled with suggestions. I looked back at the door of the packhouse where my Alpha had just disappeared.

Don't tell the Alpha. I don't want him to get the wrong idea, but I might have a hunch.

What do you have?

??

I might be mistaken. But I could have sworn I just smelled Luna Anna's scent on Alpha Thomas.

After that text, I put my phone away and walked down the steps. The scent I had locked onto lead into the forest, and I was going to follow it.

I could feel the phone blow up in my pocket but ignored it as I focused. After a full thirty minutes of walking, I reached a small shed in the middle of the woods. I didn't even know this thing existed on the pack lands.

My heartbeat quickened when I smelt that Luna Anna's scent became stronger as I approached the shed. I tried the door, but it was locked. I focused on the shed. A heartbeat could be heard from within, but I noticed that the walls were thick, made to keep out noise.

I tried the door again and when that didn't work, I tried to break it down. I finally managed after a few tries.

What I saw inside almost made my heart stop. On a small bed laid a figure. A weak and exhausted woman.

She opened her eyes and her eyes widened as she saw me.

"Jasper?" she croaked out softly.

"Luna."
