《My Brother's Best Friend》Chapter 36

After a three hour drive we had finally made it to the Grand Canyon. It was hell. Between Cam and Ethan arguing over which NFL team was their favorite, to my mom blaring country music -my least favorite genre- and Maya falling asleep on my shoulder, making me literally have no room, I breathe a sigh of relief when we finally reach our air bnb.

My dad lets out a whistle as he looks around at the view, which has an open look over the canyon. I don't know how much they rented this for, but it must have cost them a pretty penny.

If I wasn't so miserable over the ride here I'd appreciate it a lot more. I've seen the canyon before, but each time we come here I'm reminded at how little we are compared to earth. This canyon is such a work of art right now with the sunset a bunch of orange, red and pinks swirled together. Pictures will never do it justice.

"There's a hot tub!" Maya shrieks, pointing to the large wooden deck above us. I see Ethan mutter something under his breath as he grabs some of the suitcases from the trunk, and it takes everything I have not to laugh.

Poor kid.

There's three bedrooms, so obviously my parents get the master, Maya and I get one room, and Ethan and Cam get the other.

I set my duffel bag down onto the bed as Maya already starts to unpack her clothes for the weekend. It's just the two of us, and she sends me a sly grin.

"I bet you and Cam will get a lot of use out of that hot tub." She says.

"Yeah, and you've officially lost your mind. You think we'd do something like that with everyone here?"

"Oh, I'm sorry." She laughs with sarcasm. "Did you or did you not mess around in your room with everyone sleeping a few doors down?"

"Okay!" I hiss. "I get it. Damn."

"Just stating the obvious." She shrugs. "I'm so excited to go out to dinner to that fancy place your parents were talking about. I bet there's so many photo opportunities for my Insta."

She pulls out a sparkly dress, one that I know is going to make Ethan drool, and then she pulls out another one. A red one with a corset bodice, and I arch my eyebrow up.

"You didn't think I was going to let you dress like a nun when you and your boyfriend have a weekend away, right?"

"Um.... With my parents and a brother who still doesn't know about us." I clarify. "My dad will never let me wear that."

She chuckles sneakily to herself, like she's waited her whole life for this moment. "Something tells me they won't be making it to dinner tonight."

Before I can ask further questions, Ethan opens up the door, and his eyes quickly look at the underwear Maya has laid out on top of the comforter, letting out an irritated sigh before he looks at me again.

"We were talking about what we wanted to do this weekend and saw that there were some pretty cool trails along the canyon. Do you guys want to come with us?"

"You're actually including us in your plans?" I laugh harder than I should, and Ethan sends me a death stare. I know he's just doing this to spend more time with Maya, but a little fun won't hurt.

"I think..." Maya elbows me into the side, and, again, it takes everything I have not to laugh. "That sounds like fun."

"Okay." He nods, but he's drumming his fingers on the entryway of the room. It's funny to see him like this. So nervous. "Cool."

"Cool." She replies, and the awkward silence becomes so much that I have to stand up from the bed and push Ethan out with my hands.

"Okay, bye." I giggle, and I see Cam on the couch in the living room, unable to keep his eyes off of me.

He licks his bottom lip, and I can feel the tension rise between us. He's so hot, and I find myself still lingering by the door.

"Sorry." Ethan mutters, and it's insane to me how he's so completely clueless to this. "I thought you guys would want to hang out with us. That's all."

"If I have to." I roll my eyes, and Cam places his hand over his chest like he's offended behind Ethan's back. "We're going to go and get ready for dinner."

______

"Maya!" I shriek when I slam the door shut to our room once more. My parents have been in the bathroom for a straight hour, and I know that's not a coincidence.

"What?" She asks innocently. "I may or may not have given them a little bit of laxative powder in their water bottles. They'll be fine by tomorrow."

"Maya." I repeat again in disbelief. "You are honestly insane."

"It worked, didn't it?"

Despite how mad I was, her plan did work. My parents chalked it up to the shrimp they ate the day before and said to go on without them, giving us their card. I highly doubt they'll be leaving the bathroom anytime soon to even care about what we wear.

"Why were you wanting this to work out so badly?" I tease. "It can't be all about Cam and I. Plus, you're getting dressed up too, so...."

Knowing I've caught her in the act, she sprawls out her makeup in front of her on the floor and sits cross legged. "It doesn't matter." She huffs.

"Oh, I think it does."

"Maybe you should do less talking and more getting ready." She laughs, but I see her cheeks turn red.
