《His Light, Her Darkness》Chapter 38: BINGO!

A week has gone by since I finally let loose on Matteo. A week has gone by since I have last seen him. And it's been the best week of my life.

I haven't seen even a sign of him since then, despite knowing that he is fully staying in the same apartment as me.

At first I thought he'd left me to my own devices. I would walk around the apartment freely and do whatever I wanted within my cage. I would eat all the food in the cupboards, and catch up on all my favourite TV shows on Netflix (which was thankfully American Netflix). And I would sleep wherever I wanted.

But then I noticed that each morning, an apple was placed onto the kitchen island, with one bite in it. When i first saw it, I thought It might've been me, sleep walking or something. But it was too consistent, and then I began staying up late at night, and would listen to the faint footsteps outside my door.

I would creep out to try and catch a glimpse of him, but I only ever caught him when the door was closing.

Something about this whole week is making me queasy.

It doesn't seem right that he would just ignore me like this. Is he plotting something?

Knowing him, probably.

I'm not complaining though. It's been quite therapeutic just lounging around. Of course it's gotten boring, but Dante has visited me a few times this week, to bring the groceries up and other things.

Apparently Matteo doesn't want anyone else to enter the apartment, and has doubled security on the building. I was definitely relieved when Dante had told me, It had certainly extinguished any fears that I had of the person who tried to kill me, coming back.

But however much I've had time to think, I can never push past the thought that I broke my promise to Scott. I left him behind, when I said I would be back for him. I can't help but think he thinks I've abandoned him, or if he even thinks I'm dead.

I hope he's being given food, and I hope his wounds are alright. I hope he is getting through it.

As soon as I return to Maine, I will go to see him, and then we'll devise a plot to escape and go to England. And there we can stare up at the stars and forget everything.

Forget that I was ever kidnapped, that my father is one of the most powerful men in the world...

That sounds nice.

"I bought your favourite, green tea mochi!" Dante exclaims as he exits the elevator, holding up a plastic bag full of food. As he drops the bag on the island, he shrugs off his suit jacket, throwing it onto the bench along with the bags.

I get up excitedly from the couch, not bothering to pause the movie I'm watching. "Thank you so much, you have no idea how much I've been craving them." I groan as I begin to search the back, taking out the box of mochi and tearing it apart.

"You look like you haven't seen food in years." Dante remarks playfully.

"You have no idea." I say, stuffing my mouth with the sweet treat.

It's euphoric, mochi is like eating heaven. I can't seem to get enough.

"What have you been up to today?" He asks as he begins putting all the food away in the pantry.

"Oh you know, the usual. Woke up at twelve, had an hour long shower, sat down and watched TV for a few hours..."

"We need to find you a hobby."

"No shit. Did you know that there is literally nothing in this apartment? I've tried looking for anything to entertain myself; board games, cards, pens and paper... The list goes on. This place is severely lacking in the entertainment department!"

Dante laughs as he finishes up putting everything away. I stare up at him as he walks towards me. He's a good head taller than me, and his usual tan tin, has begun to pale. I'm not surprised as the weather in Osaka has been nothing more than rain.

"I'll tell you what, tomorrow I'll bring over a notebook and pencils."

"Really?" I ask, suddenly wanting it to be tomorrow already. Dante smiles.

"Of course." He ruffles my hair, and I push him off quickly, laughing.

"Thank you." I say.

"Don't thank me."

"Don't tell me what to do." I retort, with a smile.

"I'll make sure to remember." Dante says as he pulls his phone from his pocket, having received a message. "Hmmmm, that's strange." He says, tilting his head as he stares hard into the small screen of his phone.

"What is it?" I ask, trying to look at the phone, but he only brushes me away, raising the phone away from my face.

Suddenly, Dante's brows raise in shock or surprise. I can't tell because it seems to meld into one, though he definitely looks startled. His mouth falls agape, and for a moment he looks as if he's been prettified.

"What happened?" I query, wanting to know what exactly has Dante so shocked.

Dante's mouth opens and closes like a fish out of water gasping for breath. Typing something quickly into his phone, he raises it into his ear, and I can hear the familiar sound of a phone ringing.

I try to listen closely as to what is going on, but Dante quickly discovers that, and takes long strides towards Matteo's office, which I know for a fact is currently unoccupied as I had previously checked if there was anything useful in there.

I don't follow Dante, but however look towards the jacket which he had so carelessly left splayed on the kitchen counter. I don't hesitate as I rush towards it, looking for anything that could possibly help me escape, or injure anyone.

My hands delve into the many pockets with ease, and I search as fast as I can, very much aware that Dante could be back at any moment. And then...

BINGO!

Kind of...

I pull out a wad of cash from Dante's inside suit pocket. It's a collection of one hundred dollar notes in USD along with Japanese Yen. I don't even think before I take just enough for Dante not to notice, then shoving the rest back into his pocket.

I have money! A lot of money, which means... All I need to do now is escape.

I huff as I shove the cash into my pocket and arrange his jacket the way it was before.

Sounds easier said than done.

And just when I thought today was my lucky day, I heard the familiar ding of the elevator, turning to find Matteo exiting, his eyes flashing directly up at me. His face; emotionless.

We look at each other for a good ten seconds, as if we are both surprised at each other's presence despite the both of us living here.

Matteo is the first one to shake it off before he sets off towards his office, not acknowledging me any further.

Something has to be seriously wrong.

I make my way towards the office door, placing my ear against the cool surface.

"Are you serious? Did this seriously fucking happen? In the middle of the fucking day!" Matteo roars. I flinch at his words. What has got these men so riled up?

"Sir-" Something is definitely wrong for Dante to be addressing Matteo as 'sir'.

"Fuck Dante! Do you know what this means? It means someone is on the inside!" Matteo yells once again. "For fucks sake, how did they manage to break into the house?"

Someone broke into the house. I instantly grow fearful. This house?

"They killed eight of our men, and took one of our prisoners... If this gets out to any of the neighbouring mobs or gangs..." Matteo trails off, but I don't need to hear anymore of what he has to say.

The house was broken into. The house in Maine--It has to be.

Could that have been Dad, could Dad have found me?
