《His Light, Her Darkness》Chapter 19: This Is How A War Begins

As soon as Roman had left on his private jet, I hadn't wasted any time in getting the hell out of the airport and away from Harry and his men. I didn't need to be watched over by them. I've shown that I've been nothing but capable, and Mia running away was totally out of my control.
And out of all people, Roman sent Harry. Harry! Knowing full well of our complicated past, which will no doubt distract us in getting the job intended done.
Ever since I broke up with Harry, I've been hooking up with as many guys as possible to clear his memory from my mind. And thank god straight after we broke up, Roman tasked me with the job of watching Mia, which meant I no longer had to work with him on a daily basis.
But now? He's unavoidable!
"Dot be a child, Rain!" Harry yells across the airport as he tries to catch up with me.
A child? He's calling me a child? I roll my eyes.
I will not fall for this man's charms again. I knew it was dumb getting involved with him in the first place, i mean--his family is insane... I love them, don't get me wrong, but there is too much drama in that family to deal with.
I feel Harry's familiar hand on my shoulder, and I promptly shrug it off. "Where are you going, Rain? Do you think you can just wander off and that I won't follow?"
I snorted. "I am perfectly capable of looking for Mia myself. Why don't you go find something useful to do?"
"Don't let our past relationship come between work. You know how much Mia means to the family."
"Oh, and she means so much to you, doesn't she?" I spit, instantly regretting my words.
I look over to Harry, and he dips his head. A pang of guilt spreads through my chest. Maybe that was a bit low.

"I'm sorry." I say shyly. "You're right, I shouldn't let our past affect work, so I think we should visit the Circle, the club where Mia and I were at the night she left. We can go through security footage and work out what happened to make her so distressed."
Harry nods, not saying anything else, before falling back and briefing his men on what is to happen.
***
We arrived at the club within the next hour, having taken separate cars. With half the men with me while the other half with Harry.
I wait outside the club, when Harry's car pulls up and all the men tumble out, like they're about to bust some drug operation or something. I let out a little laugh. They all look so out of place in their suits, it's quite hilarious.
Though, by Harry's expression, he doesn't find it too funny.
"Let's get this over with, I'm suffering from serious jet lag." Harry states, as i unlock the club doors and we all enter.
I flick on the lights which immediately illuminate the large open space. There's something so eerie about an empty club. It looks like a ghost town.
We all pan out and I head to the staff room, with Harry following behind. "Do you have cameras everywhere? Could she have gone into a private room?" Harry questions as we enter the cramped staff room, one of the walls lined with computer screens.
I begin to boot up the system. "We don't have cameras in the private rooms, but there's no way that she went in one of them. She would've needed to be invited inside."
"Was there anyone who may have asked her up?" Harry continues with his investigation.
Mia knows no one in New York, there is no way she was invited into one of the private rooms, let alone willingly went inside. I tap my nail against the desk. "I mean, I can check who was in the private rooms, see if maybe any names ring a bell?"

Harry nods, and I begin logging into the computer, opening the file regarding the other night's private room occupants.
The list comes up and I begin scrolling through the list of names. None of them ring a bell, they're all rando's. My eyes continue to scan until my eyes meet one very familiar name.
Matteo Giovanni.
Harry instantly notices my unease and he ducks down looking at the names, then noticing just who I'm looking at.
Matteo Giovanni is the heir to the Italian Mafia. After Roman gave up his role as the leader of the Italian mafia to his closest friend; Leonardo Giovanni, Leonardo had a son; Matteo. And soon he is to become head of both the New York and Italian mafia, taking over after his father retires within the next year.
When I found out Mia had met Matteo, I was surprised to say the least. And after seeing all those media articles, I was definitely concerned. Mia doesn't know who Matteo is, and Matteo doesn't know who Mia is. Yet somehow fate pulled them together.
When Roman found out, he was not happy, and he had asked me to do some digging into their relationship, though when i had asked Mia about him, she was totally adamant that there was nothing between them. And i believed her, maybe--
I'm pulled out of my thoughts by a gunshot ringing through the club. I bolt upright, and instantly Harry is at the office door, peeking through the crack.
I pull my gun from my jacket, just as Harry, and we give each other knowing looks before we scramble out into the open.
My eyes instantly land on the dead man in the middle of the club. He lies on his back, blood pooling from his head where the bullet hit.
Whoever did this is trained.
I raise my gun, and survey the premise, just as everyone else.
"Show yourself!" I yell. But I'm met with nothing but the pattern of raced footsteps followed by the slam of a door.
Straight away, I watch as Harry's men race towards the back door where the noise had come from, while both Harry and I head towards the dead body.
"Did you know him well?" I ask Harry as he kneels down.
"He was new, beginning only a month ago." He says quietly. "I'm going to kill the bastard who did this."
I purse my lips. Shit just got serious. Whoever just killed one of our men clearly didn't want us to know something that has happened within the club. They knew that we were going to find it, and came back to erase all traces of themselves.
My mouth becomes ajar and I turn back towards the office, racing like my life depends on it. I hear Harry's voice yelling after me, but i don't listen as i look down at the computer screen "Fuck!" I yell.
My gaze lands on the USB plugged into the computer, and the virus which is currently eating away at everything on the computer. I rip it out, but it's too late. All the security footage is gone, meaning we have no leads.
How could i be this stupid?
Harry enters the room and swears just as I did when I noticed the deep shit we are in now.
Now we know for sure that Mia didn't just up and go. Someone has taken her, and whoever they are, they're willing to do anything to keep their identity a secret.
When Roman finds out about this, there's going to be war.
