《Arranged Love (Currently Being Edited)》Chapter 9 - The Wedding Ceremony

The Priest spoke, "All stand," he told them and there was some clatter as the church full of people stood to their feet. "Dearly beloved, we have gathered together in the house of the Church so that in the presence of the Church's minister and the sovereign people of Norway your intention to enter into a Marriage contract may be strengthened by the Lord with a sacred seal. And so, in the presence of the Church, I ask you to state your intentions. Paulo and Eva, have you come here today with the intention to enter into Marriage?"
She continued looking down and reluctantly said, "I have" at the same time that he did. His reply sounded just as half-hearted as hers.
The priest joined their right hands and she looked over at the priest briefly, staying focused on him, feeling her heart rate picking up and getting light headed. She wished this would just get over already.
The Priest asked, "Do you Paulo Santiago Aragon take Eva Elise Glucksburg to be your wife? Do you vow before God to be faithful to her, resisting temptation and forsaking all others? Do you vow to stand by her side in sickness and in health and to protect and honor her all the days of your life?"
There was a long pause and she finally raised her eyes up to look at him. He was standing there wearing a golden bejeweled crown in a black and white tuxedo with a sash of royal pendants across his chest and a gold rope around his shoulder. She noticed that his suit accentuated his broad shoulders, and his brown hair was slicked back that normally fell over his forehead and his bright hazel eyes were shining.
He turned towards the priest and she saw his chiseled jaw line and smooth clear skin. He was so handsome it almost hurt to look at him too long and she found herself wondering if he might be the most handsome man on earth. He was so gorgeous, but he wasn't in love with her so it didn't matter.
He still hadn't answered the question and she wondered if he was having second thoughts. If so that would be perfect because she could get out of this marriage without any of the blame. Her heart was racing and she took a deep breath.
He turned and looked down at her, studying her face and thinking before he finally said, "I do."
There were sighs of relief heard from the audience. Eva was probably the only one not relieved.
The Priest asked Eva the same question and she stood there, feeling panicked, her mind quickly racing through her options and she imagined how it would play out if she said no and made a run for it. Every scenario in her head other than saying yes didn't end well.
She looked over at the faces of her parents and his parents before looking back at the priest and quietly saying "I do."
At that point the Priest had them exchange wedding rings. Paulo placed Eva's ring on her finger and said, "Eva, receive this ring as a sign of my vow of fidelity before God and of our eternal union. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

Then Eva placed Paulo's ring on his finger saying, "Paulo, receive this ring as a sign of my vow of fidelity before God and of our eternal union. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
The priest looked at them and said, "The vows and exchanging of rings you have made today before God and these witnesses have created an eternal union, a bond that can never be broken. You are no longer two people, but are now joined as one flesh to live the rest of this earthly life together from this day forward until death do you part."
Hearing that gave Eva a chill down her spine. She was stuck with Paulo forever.
Following this the priest stepped forward and anointed both of their heads with oil as he recited a prayer in Latin and went through the communion, before having them each sign the marriage license.
Then he announced loudly, "What God has brought together this day, let no man or woman tear apart. I now officially pronounce that you are husband and wife. Paulo, you may kiss your bride."
Eva's breath caught in her throat as she looked up at Paulo, locking eyes with him. Her heart was pounding even faster and she felt her hands getting sweaty. He took a step towards her until his body was up against her and with his eyes still locked onto hers he slowly leaned in. She swallowed hard.
She couldn't believe she was having her first kiss with Paulo here in front of all of these people, broadcast live all over the world. Just thinking about that, made her feel dizzy. He leaned in close, close enough where she could smell his cologne and the mint on his breath until his lips were hovering right over hers.
She held her breath and her eyes closed right as his lips pressed lightly against hers, and her stomach did a flip. Kissing him made her legs feel weak and she thought she might just melt into a puddle right there on the floor. His kiss made her feel a flutter of butterflies inside. There was definitely a spark there.
He pulled back from the kiss and she stood there on wobbly legs with her heart pounding, trying to catch her breath, but he didn't seem to notice the effect his kiss had on her. She stood up straight and stepped back with wide eyes, blinking.
The priest dismissed them with: "From this day forward you will now be known as Mr. and Mrs. Aragon. May you be blessed with an abundance of healthy children and a long, happy life together. Go in peace and glorify the Lord."
The organ music started playing again and the choir started singing. Paulo reached out and took Eva's hand before proceeding back down the aisle, while the guests stood to their feet and clapped. Her mind was still reeling from that kiss.
Eva looked over at this perfect, gorgeous man beside her and thinking about that kiss made her face blush. She couldn't believe he was her husband now. She was Mrs. Aragon. She shared his last name. Thinking about it gave her goosebumps because she knew this was a moment she would never forget.

Her heart was pounding with adrenaline as they got outside in the hall, away from the guests for a brief moment. He let go of her hand and they both stood there in awkward silence for a few seconds not sure what to say to each other until finally the doors burst open and the procession of guests came out of the church, shaking hands and congratulating them.
Guests started giving her little tiny baby figurines which was a tradition that was supposed to be good luck for fertility on the wedding night. It was the most awkward, cringey moment she could imagine.
She forced a smile and said, "Thank you" to each person until she ended up having her hands full of these little babies. She looked over at Paulo and he looked down at what was in her hands and her face blushed again, just thinking about making babies with him, a practical stranger.
Paulo walked away briefly to talk to his parents and her mother looked over and saw the look on her face and asked, "What's wrong?"
"I was just thinking about tonight," she whispered, looking down at her hands full of tiny plastic babies. "It's going to be so awkward. I don't even know him."
"I know it may be awkward, but Paulo is your husband now and the most important thing is that Spain and Norway have a male heir as soon as possible. You need to start trying right away, like tonight," she said firmly. "I know Paulo's parents have told him the same thing."
The wedding coordinator interrupted their conversation and started ushering them outside to a limo that was waiting to transport them over to the reception hall across town. Ava waved at the crowd of thousands of screaming, cheering bystanders as she got into the limo, catching her breath.
Paulo got in beside her and closed the door, letting out an exhale as he unbuttoned his suit jacket and ran a hand through his hair, breaking up some of the gel that had been holding it back. She looked over and waited for him to say something, anything, but he didn't. He sat in silence with his head turned, watching the buildings pass by outside the window.
She wondered what he was thinking. She wondered if he really meant the vows that he said today where he promised to be faithful to her. She wanted to ask him, but she couldn't get up the nerve to do it.
When they arrived at the reception hall, the first thing they had to do was take a million official royal pictures with the wedding party. She put on a big fake smile and tried to look as happy as she could. She just hoped it would be believable.
After taking so many pictures, the family and wedding party proceeded to follow the wedding planner to a large ballroom where there were many round tables decorated with bright white table cloths, very fancy plating, and folded napkins. At the center of each table was a large citrus tree strung up with white Christmas lights and they glistened and sparkled.
Eva took a seat at the long table at the head of the room and looked at the wedding planner who was standing nearby.
"So what happens next?" she asked her. She felt silly that she didn't already know since this was her wedding but she had left all the planning to her Mom and the wedding coordinators.
"Since the ceremony was held here in Norway the Queens compromised and decided the reception would follow the traditions of a Spanish wedding. Weddings in Spain usually last about 12 hours."
"12 hours!" Eva shouted in shock. "Shit!" she whispered under her breath. She couldn't wait for this to all be over with and there were still hours left.
"Yes, Spanish weddings are all about abundance, feasting on delicious food, mingling, drinking, and dancing," the wedding planner informed her. "Right now is cocktail hour where you talk, drink and mingle with your guests. Then you'll move to the other room where you'll be served a full five course meal and after that there will be a few hours of dancing and drinking followed by a very late meal to soak up the alcohol and everyone will usually turn in around midnight."
"Thank you," Eva said, letting out a frustrated exhale as she made her way back to her seat at the empty head table and sat down by herself.
She looked across the room and spotted Paulo talking to a group of guys around his own age and they were all laughing and smiling. 'Those must be his friends', she thought.
She decided to get up and mingle around the room instead of sitting there by herself looking like a loner. Depending on what mood she was in she could be an introvert or extrovert. She was a little of both. She was usually an introvert around large group events like this or when she was worn out and mentally exhausted and didn't feel like talking to people. She came out of her shell and was really outgoing when she was with her close friends and people she was comfortable with or if she was in a good mood.
She mingled around the room and spoke briefly to some relatives of hers that she hadn't seen in years, introduced herself to a few relatives of Paulo's, discussed politics with a member of the Norwegian Parliament, shook hands with a few celebrities and thanked them for coming and chatted with some wealthy, powerful people that had connections to the royal family.
As Eva made her rounds around the room a waiter handed her something called a Sangria, which was a type of wine with cut up chunks of fruit and berries inside. It tasted so good that before she even realized it, the whole glass was empty and she ate the fruit and then she was handed another.
Paulo ended up walking over to her and said, "There are some people that want to meet you."
He put his hand on the small of her back sending a shiver across her skin as he led her over to the group of young men he had been talking to earlier.
