《Arranged Love (Currently Being Edited)》Chapter 6 - First Fight

She exhaled and looked away with her arms crossed. She had a feeling it was a woman back home he was calling and that made her feel insanely jealous for some reason. She crossed her arms and turned away from him.
"Why are you mad?" he asked. "Because I was late?"
She looked over at him with her eyes narrowed and didn't answer, rolling her eyes and looking away again with a huff.
"I literally just met you and you're already trying to control me," he grumbled in frustration.
"It was a woman you called wasn't it?" she asked, turning back to him.
"Is that why you're suddenly so mad? Are you jealous?" he laughed.
She looked away, clenching her teeth with her arms crossed, feeling aggravated and sad at the same time. She knew she had no right to be mad at him or to be jealous but she couldn't help it. She stayed turned away from him and didn't say anything. She didn't know what to say.
After a few seconds of silence she started waving to the crowd and putting on a fake smile, pretending to be the perfect, happily engaged princess that the people of Norway thought she was. That couldn't be further from the truth but she needed to be that for them and play her role. On the inside, behind that fake smile she was miserable.
Her thoughts drifted back to that phone call and she couldn't help but wonder why he was so defensive if it wasn't a woman. She wondered if he loved her. If he was seeing someone else, was he was planning to continue seeing her on the side after they were married?
She sat through the rest of the parade without looking over at him at all, looking out at the crowd with a fake smile plastered across her face, waving as if nothing was wrong while on the inside she felt like screaming. She noticed Paulo didn't wave but just sat there with his arms crossed, looking as miserable as she felt.
When the parade was finally over and the carriage came to a stop he got up and hurried down the steps and walked away, acting like he couldn't get away from her fast enough. That made her face flush with embarrassment as she got up and stepped down slowly. She looked up and spotted her best friend Astrid waiting for her. As soon as she saw her she rushed over and gave her the biggest hug and all the emotions she was feeling bubbled up and she started crying onto her shoulder.

Astrid patted her back and pulled her hair out of her face, "What's wrong Eva? Are you ok?" she asked softly, looking into her eyes.
She sobbed for a few seconds and then through her tears she choked out the words, "I don't want to marry him Astrid. I'd rather die."
Astrid coughed to clear her throat with her eyes looking over Eva's shoulder at someone standing behind her. "Ummmm," she laughed awkwardly.
Eva turned around and saw Paulo standing right behind her and her heart dropped. It was obvious from the look on his face that he had heard what she just said.
He narrowed his eyes at her and grumbled, "Trust me. The feeling's mutual," before turning and walking away with his hands shoved in his suit pockets.
She turned back to Astrid, feeling her cheeks burning red. "Oh my gosh. I'm so embarrassed. I can't believe he heard me say that," she groaned, laying her forehead onto Astrid's shoulder.
"Well why did you say it? What happened?" she asked, patting her back.
Eva lifted her head and said, "He said he's only marrying me because they're making him. He called our engagement a bad situation he's stuck in and I think he was late for the parade because he was calling his girlfriend. Then he mocked me when I asked about it."
"Ouch," she said, making a pained face. "I'm so sorry Eva. I can't believe he treated you like that! I don't care how hot he is. I hate him now."
"Yeah. It looks like I'm going to be stuck in a loveless marriage to an asshole," she said sadly with a sigh. "Just what I've always wanted," she laughed sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
Astrid laughed. "Well my offer still stands to take your place," she offered with a smile and a wink.
"I thought you said you hated him now?" she asked, raising a skeptical eyebrow.
"Maybe, but I'd still marry him. Can you blame me? I mean, look at that man."
Eva laughed and shook her head. "You know sometimes I think you would marry an axe murderer if he was hot."
"If he looked like Paulo I'd consider it," she said and they both busted out laughing really hard and took a minute to catch their breath.

She wrapped her arm around her shoulder as they started walking and said, "You're too much Astrid," looking down and smiling at her best friend.
Astrid shrugged with a smile. "Hey, hate's a funny thing. It comes and goes. How could you stay mad at that face?"
"Very easily," Eva laughed. "Because that face has the mouth of an asshole."
Astrid looked over to where Paulo was talking to Eva's parents. "You know, all jokes aside, it really is a shame he's such a horrible person because he sure is nice to look at isn't he?"
Astrid always was boy crazy.
"Yeah I mean, he's gorgeous. He literally took my breath away when I first saw him, but he has a crappy personality. After I started talking to him he didn't look so attractive anymore."
"Oh yeah? Really? So you're seriously trying to tell me that you're not attracted to that gorgeous man over there at all?" Astrid asked, raising an eyebrow with a skeptical smile.
Eva rolled her eyes at her best friend. "Obviously he's really good looking Astrid. I'm not blind. But he's so unpleasant to be around that it makes him not attractive anymore. He doesn't even like me at all. I seriously can't even stand the thought of becoming his wife tomorrow."
Astrid laughed, "You know the funny thing is, you're probably the ONLY woman in the entire world that would say they can't stand the thought of being his wife and ironically you're the only woman in the world that gets to be his wife. Life is so unfair isn't it?"
Eva laughed. "Yeah. You're right. It really is, isn't it?"
They both started laughing really hard, until her side hurt.
"I love you Astrid. Nobody can ever cheer me up and make me laugh like you do when I'm depressed. I wish you were moving to Spain with me so bad. I'm going to be so miserable and hate every second there without you. I already know."
"Yeah I wish I could move there with you too."
King Hans called for their group to gather around so they could head to lunch at the castle. Eva hooked her arm through Astrid's and walked that way. They all gathered into the limo and Eva took a seat in the back beside Paulo, next to the window but she didn't talk to him. When they got back to the castle they all filed out of the car and headed in and Paulo didn't even walk next to her.
She hesitated before going into the castle, standing outside the door and rummaging in her clutch for some chewing gum. She wasn't allowed to chew gum in public because it wasn't considered proper for a royal because photographs taken with your mouth half open never looked good, but now that she was at home away from the cameras it was okay. As she stood in the doorway her brother Kristoff came around the corner and spotted her, walking over.
He looked at his twin sister and asked, "Are you ok Eva?"
She gave him a half hearted smile and then looked down at the gum in her hands, unwrapping it and popping it in her mouth before saying, "Sure Kristoff. I'm ok." She let out an exhale and added, "Not that it even matters if I wasn't. What I want or think doesn't seem to matter to anybody."
"Yes it does. It matters to me. I want you to be happy."
She gave him a weak smile.
"Thank you. It means a lot to hear you say that. At least I have you and Astrid in my corner."
"I'll always be in your corner. We might fight but that's just because we're so close and we're so much alike. We're both so competitive and stubborn," he laughed. "But at the end of the day you know I'll always love you and have your back though, right?" he asked.
"Yeah I know," she said, giving him a weak smile. "You know, it just hit me that I'm moving all the way to Spain without you. That's so crazy. I've literally spent every day of my life by your side and now we're going to be in completely different countries."
She felt sadness wash over her as a tear ran down her cheek and she wiped it away.
