《RUYI》58 - Song

I never felt so free and content in all my lift as I am now traveling the Prince through the valleys and mountains. I've seen so many things that I've always dreamed to see. Lakes, rivers, seas - mountains, hills, valleys - everything had been so beautiful. Everything will be forever engraved in my heart and mind.

On our final night, the Prince told me that we will arrive to the capital city by noon the next day.

"My estate in Wu Xi capital is different, the layout is 10 times more difficult"

As I lay on shoulder, the Prince spoke to me while he touched my cold cheek.

"I will have someone teach you the layout of the estate so don't stay in the room so often. Try to learn the layout. I don't want you to get lost and hurt"

How can I get hurt?

"The mansion is built on the edge of a cliff" He said with a chuckle as if he read my mind. "If you take a wrong path or go through a trap door, you'll fall to your death"

Now I'm curious with the Prince's estate in Wu Xi. The Prince's estate in Milong was already massive with a maze-like layout. I got lost for hours the first time I tried to look for the Main Hall.

"Ruyi" He said softly. "We may never go back to Milong... Wu Xi will be our home"

I quietly look into his eyes.

"Is Wu Xi where the Prince was born?"

The Prince suddenly smiled warmly.

"Ruyi, this is the first time you ask something about me"

Should I not have? But before the panic hit me, the Prince hugged me with a soft laugh.

"Yes, I was born in Wu Xi... My family is all from this country, long before it became the Great Wu Xi"

I snuggled closer into his arms while I listened to his deep voice. We spend the night simply holding each other and talked.

We were in the middle of a conversation when someone outside begin to sing. It sounded like the guards were having their usual dinner and relaxation time. From the sound of joyous laughter, it was clear that they were having fun. It surprised me because the guards had all been so serious and expressionless the entire travel.

"Most, if not all, the guards and servants are from Wu Xi" The Prince answered my unspoken question. "We've been gone for over 5 years. It's normal that they get this happy when we're close to home"

They simply missed their home. As I continued to listen to the song, I could feel the singer's happiness of being able to go home.

"This song..." I knew the lyrics because I've seen the words in one of my books. "Peace of War"

"You know this song?" The Prince was surprised.

It was not a song that anyone would know. It fact, only soldiers are familiar with the song because it had been written by a commander so many years ago. The song had spread through the harsh war as a reminder that they're fighting for peace and for their love ones.

"Ruyi read an autobiography of a soldier... The lyrics to the song were in the book..."

"My father was the one who wrote the song. Grandfather told me when I heard it for the first time."

"Father..." I looked into his eyes, seeing emptiness.

I knew the Prince's father died before he was born. Prince Wu Hai Quan had been a legendary commander. It had said that the beginning of the great country of Wu Xi was lead by Wu Hai Quan, the 2nd eldest son of Emperor Huizhong. Wu Hai Quan was the one that conquered and united 4 largest countries now known as Wu Xi.

At the time when Wu Xi was still stabilizing the unions between countries, enemies and spies flock the country, wanting to harm the royal family. Regrettably Wu Hai Quan died protecting his eldest brother, crown Prince, from an unforeseen ambush. His death not only devastated his father and brother - but his wife and concubines as well. Quickly after Wu Jian was born, his mother committed suicide. Wu Hai Quan's concubines all followed soon after. Because of that very reason, Wu Jian was raised by his grandfather.

"Prince Wu Hai Quan... your father... your mother..."

The Prince chuckled softly.

"You don't need to be sad, Ruyi"

Sad? Was I sad? Was he sad?

"How can I be sad for someone I never known?" He said in a whisper.

That - I understand. I leaned my head to his chest and felt his arms surround me. We listened to the guards outside, now all singing with pride in their voice. The words of the song lured me in and I begin to sing quietly along.

Because the Prince was the only one who could hear me, he held me even tighter.
