《The Dragon King's Servant》Chapter Forty: Broken Law

Maalceus waited for her outburst. He waited to see her eyes narrow and her fists curl. After several moments passed, Kelly said nothing. She did nothing.

"I am sorry. It was not my intent to put this upon you. I was...taken by the moment." Maalceus explained.

Though to his ears it sounded like he was making flimsy excuses. However it was the best explanation he could offer.

"How many have you done this to in the past?" Kelly asked.

Brandi listened intently, she too wanted to know that answer. Maalceus shook his head slowly.

"None. Dragons do not claim but once. In truth set forth by law and tradition long before myself or my king, a dragon must first wed their intended partner before placing their essence within them."

Kelly furrowed her brows and then they arched up as a new thought slid across her mind.

"You broke a law?" She asked.

Maalceus hung his head low and nodded.

"It is my job to uphold the law. Every pillar, every stone and letter of the law is my duty to uphold." His fists clenched tightly. "Yet I failed."

Maalceus growled the last word out in a tone that wasn't quite human. "I forced a transition upon you and broke a sacred tradition."

"What does Lu-the king have to say?" Kelly asked. She wanted to reach out and touch Maalceus, sensing his pain and grief.

"My king has forgiven my breaking of the law. He has given me his full blessing on this matter." Maalceus replied though his own guilt did not cease.

"Did you intend on doing this to me?" Kelly asked.

Maalceus looked up from the floor and met her gaze.

"No. Not in a thousand years would I force a transition upon anyone."

"Did you intend on breaking the law?" She asked.

"Never." He snarled. "The law is a part of me as much as I am its upholder."

"Then chill the fuck out." She said scolding him.

It was Maalceus' turn to look confused.

"Wh-what?" He asked, tripping over his own words. "Why are you...not angry? Upset?"

"Oh! Oh I am upset! I'm fucking furious!" She shouted. "You are turning me into a raging monster!" Kelly turned away from Maalceus and smirked at Brandi with a wink.

Maalceus hung his head low again. 'I've ruined her life. I have no way to make up for what I have-'

"Look at me!" Kelly screamed stealing him from his pitiful thoughts of self loathing. He looked up at Kelly and instead of seeing a look of pure outrage and fury, he saw a wide grinning smile. His confusion only doubled.

"I'm just fucking with you." Kelly laughed.

Brandi, unable to contain her laughter let loose a long cackle. Maalceus wasn't sure how to feel or where to look. His eyes floated between the two laughing women.

"Maalceus lighten up a little." Kelly said.

"Y-you aren't angry with me?" He asked hesitantly.

"No. I was never angry with you." She smiled. "I was confused and uncertain but not angry. That was all Mel...I mean...my queen."

"But, what about the transition? What about the unexpected events of last night?" He asked.

His words searched for some resolution that Kelly wasn't understanding, not fully. She didn't understand the battle that raged within the head of the justice department overseer. How he admonished his own behavior and lack of control.

"Who wouldn't want to be a dragon?" Kelly shouted out, a chuckle in her voice.

Maalceus looked to Brandi who nodded in confirmation, fully enjoying how bewildered the rough and tough brother of the king appeared at that moment. Like a child who had been called upon to answer a question he knew absolutely nothing about in a subject he had been paying no attention to.

"Do you dislike being human?" He asked, turning his attention back to Kelly who had closed the distance between.

"Of course not. But think about it. If you had the choice between being a simple human and being a dragon, what would you choose?"

Maalceus had never looked at it from that perspective before. His family had always been dragons. He grew up knowing that he would become a dragon. Thinking about himself as anything else just felt wrong and out of place.

"I would most certainly want nothing more than to become a dragon." He nodded. "You truly are alright with it?"

"I mean, I have questions for sure. All in all though, yeah. I don't have too many worries."

Brandi smiled, seeing something blossom between the two of them as they stood so close together. Eyes meeting in a gaze of compassionate understanding. A question though arose to her mind.

"Maalceus? What is your dragon?"

"My dragon?" He asked.

"Oh yeah!" Kelly snapped excitedly. "What do you look like?"

Maalceus shrugged as though it were not such an impressive thing. As though becoming a dragon in itself was an everyday occurrence. While that was true from him and his brother, those from Terra would not be used to anything remotely close to dragons.

"Not much different from my lord's. While he is black, I am deep charcoal gray. Though we look very alike." He answered.

"Can we see?" Kelly asked.

"I see no reason why not." He looked at Brandi who slid in the tongues of the books before getting up and joining her friend and the head of the justice department.
