《Her Betrayal》Chapter- 17

"Wait, I wanted to know!" I heard her whine while I was on my way to my cabin.
Taking the report that I was supposed to complete last Friday, I went to his room. I prepared myself to not be affected by Kate's presence and do anything stupid.
As I stood outside their room, I heard them speak.
"Leave it."
"No Evan. She doesn't deserve to be here. You should just kick her out of the office and make sure she doesn't get a job anywhere else." I gritted my teeth, trying not to explode. At the moment I wanted nothing more than to bang her head on a wall.
"Kate , I said leave it. I will handle it."
"Yes, like you did last time. Evan I don't want her hurting you anymore." Me hurting him? It was she who hurt him for her so-called love.
"Can we not talk about it?" Evan's voice sounded like he was on the edge .
"But -"
"Please Kate." Evan's firm voice cut her argument.
"Okay , just know that-" She cut herself off as I knocked on the door and entered. I felt her eyes on me as I walked to Evan's desk.
"Braelyn, won't you greet? We met after so long." I didn't answer her. Keeping my mouth shut, I kept the file on Evan's desk.
"The report you had last day asked for." He nodded once in acknowledgement.
"Fair enough! You're ignoring me but I have one question to ask."
"Kate." Evan called in a warning tone.
"What ? I just wanted to know why she is working here. I mean, she has her 'rich boyfriend' and she still works for you. Why?" I saw Evan clicking his tongue in annoyance before looking away. Whatever self control I had was worn out.
"Ms. Katherine, I had provided my credentials, passed the interview and got the job with my own merits and that's why I'm working here. If you have any other questions, you can gladly shut your mouth." I paused and took a step towards her when my eyes were at the level of her's.
"Because you... are the bloody last person on Earth to whom I'm going to explain my fucking life." I couldn't let out a fraction of the rage I was feeling inside through those words. I wanted to tear her apart for reappearing and behaving like nothing had ever happened after she separated us.
"You aren't supposed to talk like this to my guest, Ms. Taylor." I snapped my head towards him in an instant.

"You're guest isn't supposed to show interest in my personal life, Mr. Lewis." I spoke looking directly into his eyes. He thrusted his hands and matched my gaze. I was feeling my anger rise with every second. Turning away I took a deep breath to calm myself.
"With your permission, I would leave." He nodded and I quickly strode out.
……………..
I was sending all the invites for the company's annual function through mails when the door to my cabin opened. I raised my head to see Kate coming in which immediately piqued me.
"I didn't ask you to enter." I had never been this harsh to anyone in my entire life but everything about her annoyed me to no extent.
"Oh Brae! Don't be so rude. I came to talk to you." She faked an innocent look.
"Well whatever you have to say doesn't interest me and this is the most polite I will ever be to you." I spat those words.
"I would think twice before speaking like that if I were you." I slammed my pen on the desk before getting up.
"Or what? What will you do huh?" I took menacing steps towards her.
"Oh honey, I can do a lot of things but you already know that." She blinked her eyes dramatically at me.
"Yeah, like plotting cheap plans?" I faked admiration.
"Yeah, like the one you fell for." She smirked at me.
"And now see you are out of his life and I'm in it." She purely looked like the evil villain.
"What if I tell him everything?" She chuckled evilly.
"Funny that you think he will believe you over me. " No shit! I knew it but hearing it from her mouth pricked my heart.
"In his eyes you're just a gold digging whore and I am the one girl who was there beside him in his tough times." I gritted my teeth trying not to pounce on her at any moment.
"Besides, you know me well enough not to do that." She looked at me in a challenging manner.
"Why what can you do? Frame another lie?" I snarled.
"Uh huh, maybe frame you or your sister this time. Don't forget that I am powerful enough to do that." I looked at her in disgust.
"How lower can you stoop ?" She shrugged at me.
"More than you can imagine, sweetheart. So make sure you don't open your pretty little mouth to Evan or your sister's life is going to be ruined."
"You're fucking disgusting." I spat at her.

"Watch your mouth, honey." She waved her hand dramatically and left the room.
I felt this immense need to smack someone, to break everything around. I haven't felt this much anger in my life.
……………….
"Come with me to my cabin. We'll talk." I pulled Kate to my cabin, apprehensive that she might insult Brae in front of everyone.
"Can you tell me what she is doing here?" She demanded once I closed the door behind her.
"She works here." I moved to my seat.
"What does that mean, Evan?" She asked me, shocked.
"Have a seat first. I will order something for you." I was about to pick up my phone when she sat opposite me.
"No, first tell me why is she working here where you're the boss. Why don't you kick her out already?" She spoke irritatedly.
Back in the past when drowning myself in work was the only escape for me, to get away from all the pain , I lost contact with all of my friends except for Kate and it's because of her that I still have a friend. She was the one who kept contact, spending days at my house, cheering me up and providing me with emotional support when I was depressed.
She absolutely loathes Brae for what she did .
"I can't do that ." I massaged my forehead with my fingers. I knew it would be difficult to make her understand.
"Why? Why can't you do that when you are the boss? Don't tell me she is already weaving her way back into your heart."
Yes. "It's nothing like that."
"Then what is it like Evan?"
"Leave it." I looked away.
"No Evan. She doesn't deserve to be here. You should just kick her out of the office and make sure she doesn't get a job anywhere else." I felt uneasy at that thought when I threatened Brae to do it a few days back.
"Kate, I said leave it. I will handle it." I understood her concern as a friend but I knew she wouldn't understand my hesitation at the moment. So I decided to not tell her about my suspicions regarding Brae.
"Yes, like you did last time. Evan I don't want her hurting you anymore." I really had no answer to that. Brae hurt me. She truly did.
"Can we not talk about it?" My voice came out impatiently.
"But -" I cut her off.
"Please Kate." I spoke in a firm voice which seemed to do the work.
"Okay , just know that-'' She cut herself off as someone knocked on the door. Seconds later Brae entered. Kate's gaze was fixed on her as she walked up to my desk.
"Braelyn, won't you greet? We met after so long." Brae didn't answer her. Quietly she kept the file in her hand on my desk.
"The report you had last day asked for." I nodded once in acknowledgement. After that day's incident , I hadn't expected her to complete it so first but when it comes to her work commitments she is very responsible.
"Fair enough! You're ignoring me but I have one question to ask." I dreaded Kate's words. She was surely going to insult Brae . She was already having some bad times lately and I don't know, I just didn't want her to get more insulted.
"Kate." I called in a warning tone.
"What ? I just wanted to know why she is working here. I mean, she has her 'rich boyfriend' and she still works for you. Why ?" I clicked my tongue in annoyance before looking away.
"Ms. Katherine, I had provided my credentials, passed the interview and got the job with my own merits and that's why I'm working here. If you have any other questions, you can gladly shut your mouth." I was shocked at Brae's response. This was the first time in all these days that I saw her talk back. She paused and took a step towards Kate .
"Because you... are the bloody last person on Earth to whom I'm going to explain my fucking life." She looked like she was breathing fire. It was as if she wasn't satisfied yet and wanted to say a lot more. She never used to curse except for when she was seriously mad.
"You aren't supposed to talk like this to my guest, Ms. Taylor." Her head snapped towards me in an instant.
"You're guest isn't supposed to show interest in my personal life, Mr. Lewis." She spoke looking directly into my eyes. There was this unfiltered amount of anger in her eyes. I thrusted my hands and looked back at her , matching the gaze. I knew this wasn't her normal behaviour. She valued her job a lot to behave so recklessly. Turning away she clenched her eyes shut and took a deep breath to calm herself down.
"With your permission, I would leave." She left the room as soon as I nodded while I kept looking at her retreating figure.
"Did you see how she spoke to me ?" Kate gritted her teeth. I sighed.
"I did."

The Ruined Monks of Rothfield Monastery
Erin is the youngest member of the dark monks; a supernatural brotherhood whose ultimate mission is to improve the dire circumstances of poor, war-torn villages using powers unique to each member. Or so he was led to believe. Erin, like his brothers, does not age, and that is, unfortunately, the only trait he shares with them. He cannot charm or compel like Woodrow, he cannot cast illusions like Knox, he was not swift like Swithin, not powerful like Blake. He was barely an assistant to his dear brother Wilbur, with his herbology and alchemy. He was told to lie low and make himself scarce. That is what he did. The dark monks temporarily reside in abandoned monasteries scattered around the country, feeding the poor and healing the sick, nurturing the monastic lands until it was fertile enough to raise crops and rear animals. As the years passed, they would leave these reformed, repopulated, self-sustaining monasteries and venture froth to help the next settlement. Yet, after years of toiling and quiet servitude, Erin notices that people and the country itself are declining. The villagers look gaunt, the once-lush soil now barren and cracked. He begins to feel disheartened, thinking that their mission is proving futile. Still, their leader Blake is steadfast and charges onward, and lately has his eyes set on a certain monastery in a thick, thorned forest that seems to diminish, even nullify their powers. A thick forest that Erin somehow has a connection to. A thorned glade where an ethereal voice calls his name with one simple request along with a promise:Heal the land, child. Heal the land and I promise to give you sanctuary so long as you stay. I promise to nurture you as you nurture me. As Erin cultivates the land, the land, in turn, gifts all its caretakers with new, enhanced skillsets on top of their unique powers -- skills of protection, healing, and magic. Magic. Erin had long wished to see the world fill with it again. The people, regardless of common or noble blood, still believe that magic will enter this world again. Magic to bless the king like it did the Saints. Magic to dispel the miasma befouling the world. Magic to bring back the fae folk and their many forms. It is up to Erin to forge the many paths leading to a bright future; to build a prosperous paradise that welcomes all races and bloodlines, by mastering the rewards gained through agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry, smithing, crafting, and fishing. Erin may also find a lifelong friendship and romance with his neighbor, Claude, if he decides to pursue him, and may even join him in the military campaign outside the monastery. The darkness still lurks outside, after all, and the mastery of his skills, along with a few good friends, may finally be enough to turn the tide in their favor. Most of all, Erin wants to keep the vow he set for himself: to protect everyone and everything he loves until his dying breath.
