《The Workaholic's Wife》17. Of New Friendships

Helena was much more than just a pretty face. She was a funny and smart girl who made me laugh more than I have in the whole week.

"And guess what? When Evan came to know that I was high on weed the whole meeting, he gave me silent treatment the whole week." she laughed and I did the same.

"I can imagine him doing that." I said, controlling my chuckles. She was telling me funny stories of the time she had worked with Evan and most of them involved her pissing him off.

She sighed, holding her stomach. "He is a tough nut to crack." she said.

I nodded in agreement. "Helena, did you know Eliza?" I asked. I had been curious about her but asking Evan or Catheryn didn't sound like a great idea.

"Yeah, we were not very close but yeah, I knew her." she said, taking another bite of the cookies.

"How was she?" I asked to curb my curiosity.

The smile wiped off her face and grief replaced it. "She was amazing. Very lively, very fun. She knew how to make a person jump out of his comfort zone." she told me.

"That's what she did to Evan?" I said, imagining such a scene. I would never dare to force Evan to do anything.

"Yes. Evan wasn't dry or workaholic back then. He was happy and very much in love. The way his eyes shimmered whenever he looked at her was amazing." she said.

I don't know why but I felt a little jealous. I knew there was no such thing as love between Evan and me but a part of me wanted him to look at me like that too. I wanted to make him happy, like he used to be.

"Don't worry, Scarlet. Time heals everything. I am sure time would teach him to love again." she said and I felt surprised at how mature she sounded, unlike that girl talking to me few minute ago.

"I... I am just here for Cara. Evan can do whatever he wants, as long as he isn't hurting her with his behaviour." I said but a part of me knew I was lying. There was something about Evan that keeps me interested in him.

"If you say so." she smirked.

Taking one last sip of her coffee, she stood up to leave. "It was nice talking to you." she said, pulling me in for a hug while I stood awkwardly. "Time to go back to your rude husband."

"Wait, can you please wait a minute?" I asked and she nodded. I went back to the kitchen and packed a slice of walnut pie in a box. I went outside and extended the box to her, "Can you give this to Evan? He didn't have breakfast today and I am sure he wouldn't have wasted any time in eating anything."

"I can give it to him." she said, taking it from my hand. "But I have a better idea. Come on, why don't you join me to his office?"

"I don't think he would like that." I said, worrying of his possible reaction. He would definitely not like me coming to his office without informing him beforehand.

"Oh, come on. Don't be afraid of him. He won't eat you, he is not a monster." she insisted. I didn't feel good refusing her but I couldn't exactly agree to it. What should I do then?

"I..."

"Pretty please," she pouted and I felt bad for making her disappointed.

"Okay," I agreed at last.

..........

Last time I was here in his office, Evan had insulted me and I had stomped out in anger. Now I was back here and I don't know if his reaction would be any different.

"Come on," she led me to his office although I had been here before. Everyone was giving me curious looks and I had no idea why.

"Ma'am, Ma'am, sir said not to disturb---"

"She's your boss' wife so she is also your boss. Now, go away kid." she glared at the skinny man who looked like he was going to cry any minute now. "Didn't you hear?" she scolded and he immediately backed away.

Gripping my wrist, she took me inside the room where Evan was sitting silently, his attention focused on the file in his hands.

"Helena, don't disturb me. I'm busy---" He raised his head and when he found me standing behind Helena, a frown appeared on his forehead. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to give you this pie," I said, extending my arm. His eyes switched between the box and my face, and his frown deepened.

"Stop being so formal. Can't a wife come to meet her husband?" Helena intervened and tugged me along her.

"Keep it on the table," he said to me. Nodding, I put the box on the table in front of the sofa set. "Why do I feel her coming here had something to do with you?" Evan asked Helena in an angry voice and I regretted coming here.

"Well, duh." she shrugged. "Okay, I'll go check on the project. You guys enjoy, but not too much. We don't want the security officers to see something scandalous through CCTV now, do we?" she winked at me and then before I could stop her, she left.

After she left, Evan turned to me and stared at me with a disappointed look on his face, clearly indicating that he didn't appreciate my presence in his office.

"I'll catch a cab back to house." I said and walked towards the door to leave before he could insult me.

"Wait," he stopped me before I could walk out of the door. "Just wait here. I'll be free in an hour and we can go back together." he said.

A smile appeared on my face at his offer and I turned around. He had already shifted his attention back to his file.

Sighing, I seated myself on the chair in front of him and opened my mobile. Time seemed to lengthen as I tried to pass my time by scrolling my social media. Just like in the house, he was sitting there as if he didn't exist. The silence in the office was disturbing me and I couldn't figure out how to spend my time.

Putting the mobile down, I stared at the very focused figure of Evan Parker. He was wearing a black suit that hugged his lean, muscular body perfectly. His hair, like always, looked soft like cotton balls and I fought with the urge to touch them. He had a beautiful nose and even more beautiful lips; lips that urged me to think of various scenairos that involved them. Easy there, Scarlet.

"You're distracting me. Stop looking at me like that." His irritated voice groaned and I felt heat rush on my face on being caught.

"Like what?" I asked.

For a brief moment, he lifted his head and his eyes pierced into mine, as if staring at my soul. "Like you want to jump on me." he said and my eyes bulged out of their sockets.

"It may sound strange to you but I am not interested on jumping on you or anyone else." I passed him a sweet, saccharine smile and he scowled. Saying this, I stood up and walked back to the sofa. I flopped on it and picked up a magazine placed on the side table to read.

Half an hour had passed when his secretary came to call him for something. Before leaving the room, he said to me, "Don't do anything stupid."

What did he think of me? A kid who couldn't take care of herself. Huffing my breath, I rolled my eyes and after he left, I stuck out my tongue after him.

I killed my boredom by looking at random baking videos at YouTube. When I got bored of sitting at the same place, I stood up and peeked through the high window of his room. The sunset looked charismatic from this floor and I stared through the window until it was dark outside.

He hadn't returned yet so I strolled towards his desk. The chair looked too comfy and I had always imagined how sitting in a businessman's chair would feel like. So I seated myself on it and let out a relaxed sigh.

It really felt like I was a millionaire who would order everyone around all day. The thought caused a smile to break on my lips. "You, go and bring a cup of coffee for me." I mimicked in Evan's deep voice. "And close the door behind you. I don't like noise. It interferes with my focus."

After mimicking him for quite some time, I looked around the desk. Just like his desk at home, it was neat and clean. There was nothing on it except some arranged files, his laptop, a telephone, few pens and highlighters.

Curiosity arose in me and I checked the side drawers to find something fun, like a book or something. The top one just had few more files. When I opened the second drawer, my breath hitched as I found a photoframe here.

Eliza's photo.

She was away from him yet she was so close. The way he had kept her picture in his office desk where he spent most of his time showed how much he loved her. Of course he felt irritated by me. Why won't he? I was an immature girl who came into his life out of nowhere and created a disturbance. I took the place of the one girl he adored the most in the world. For him, I would always be the stupid girl trying to replace his wife.
