《Pride and Ashes: A werewolf Story》Chapter 3: In which I burn the eggs

They witnessed her destruction,
Then were left to wonder why,
She saw nothing but darkness,
Though the stars shone in her eyes,
But maybe they'd forgotten,
When they failed to see the cracks,
That a star's light shines the brightest,
When it's starting to collapse.

My mouth watered at the sizzling bacon that was slowly popping every now and then.
I was cooking breakfast alone today. Lizzy and Jane each stayed up the whole night due to Beta Ryan needing his files cleaned.
It took them all day and night.
They were taking a 4-hour nap before finishing the rest of their chores.
I turned around at the sound of steps coming into the kitchen. Alpha Bruno walked in and gave me his regular big smile.
"Morning Fayette," he said. He came up behind me and set his chin on the top of my head.
"Morning Alpha Bruno," I replied, stirring the eggs, making sure they didn't stick to the pan.
Alpha Bruno sighed at the top of my head and asked, "How are you feeling?"
I shrugged, not wanting to answer.
Alpha Bruno growled in response and turned me around to face him.
"Fayette," he said in a low voice, "I asked- How are you feeling?"
I put my head down in shame. Werewolf's healed fast and by the time Charles had reached the Pack doctor my cheek was already healed and I was slowly waking up.
However, I felt horrible for the fact that Alpha Bruno was in an important meeting with his Beta and interrupted it to see me.
I had gotten in the way of his duties and the pack.
"Werewolf's heal fast," I replied, turning around and continuing my stirring of the eggs. "It's all healed and I'm better."

Alpha Bruno sighed and said, "You know what I meant when I asked Fayette."
My shoulders sagged. He saw right through me. I could smile all I wanted. Tell everyone I was fine and laugh as loud as I could. But he knew the truth with a single glance.
I mumbled to the eggs, knowing that he would hear me- but I didn't have the courage to face him, "I don't know what I did wrong. Why did they even come down there? How are their hearts so....so...." I struggled to find the right word but I couldn't. I couldn't bring myself to understand why people could be so mean and malicious just for the fun of it.
It wasn't the fact that Estela had cut and hit me. I had been hit before- for messing up a job or going to slow. What confused me was that they purposely sought me out. ME. And then carried out their cruelty.
I felt Alpha Bruno's arms enclose me from behind. I leaned into his chest, missing the feeling of warmth and being loved.
"I'm so sorry," Alpha Bruno whispered in a pained voice. He kissed the top of my head and let go, allowing me to finish breakfast.
Walking over to the island in the middle of the kitchen, he perched on it and said, "The king sent me a message saying he needs extra hands for the Blue Moon Ceremony."
I nodded. He had already talked to the omegas about it. I wasn't going. I did too much around here.
Alpha Bruno cleared his throat and continued saying, "Stacy approached me and told me that she and her mate are expecting a child though."
I gasped in excitement. "Stacy and Bill are expecting!" I did a happy dance with the stirrer in my hand.

Alpha Bruno laughed. "Ya well, she asked if she could stay. At first, I was against it, but with the recent event on you, I'm thinking otherwise."
I turned to Alpha Bruno confused. "Where is this going?" I asked, narrowing my eyes in his direction.
"Fayette," Alpha Bruno ran his hands through his hair and said, "I don't feel comfortable keeping you here. I can't stand the thought of someone hurting you when I'm just a building away. I would feel better if you took Stacy's place and went with the other omega's to help with the Blue Moon Ceremony at the Palace."
I stood staring blankly at Alpha Bruno.
"Your eggs are burning," He said, nodding in the direction of my pan.
"Gah!" I quickly turned off the stove and tried to scavenge what I could. While I saved my eggs though I exclaimed to Alpha Bruno. "I can't leave? Who will cook breakfast-
"Stacy will," He interrupted me saying.
"Alright, then who will shop for-
"Stacy can do that too,"
"Then who will file-"
"Fayette, you do know that Stacy is not the only omega here right? I'm only taking five of you to help with the ceremony," Alpha Bruno said, interrupting me again.
"Fine," I said. Then a thought came into my head. "But who will do the repairs?"
Alpha Bruno stopped with his finger pointed in the air like he was about to make a statement. His mouth was open but nothing came out. A look of deep concentration soon came over his face.
A smug look came over my face as I watched his struggle.
Finally, Alpha Bruno sighed. "Fayette, can you please just go help? Leave for a bit, experience the palace, have fun with Lizzy and Jane. They won't work you so hard there, and you'll be safe."
Alpha Bruno looked down at me with pleading eyes, "Please just do this for me, Fayette."
I looked away. I would do anything the Alpha asked. He didn't use his Alpha voice- the one that made us obey whatever, whenever- on me. I know he didn't use it because he treasured me- respected me. And I could count on one hand how many people did that.
Looking at him I gave a small smile.
"Okay," I said, "I'll go."
We all deserve more deep quotes in our life :)
