(It's Friday the thirteenth, and it's a full harvest moon, spooky)

Sheila
—
"Who are you," I scrunched up my nose and instinctively leaned backward. I wanted to look over my shoulder to my mate. But it almost struck me stupid knowing that he wasn't going to be there.
I looked at the man towering over me. Chills shot down my body, I felt my defensive side slowly yawning awake. I wanted to leg it up the tree's steps, though that would be rude. But maybe rude was the only option.
No. I am a strong girl, and I can handle this.
"I am Selven Terasture, nice to meet you, my lady." He took my hand in his bowing, kissing my knuckles. There was nothing more I wanted to do than rip my hand out of his grip and run for the hills.
I gave him a crooked forced smile, "it's nice to meet you too," I pulled my hand backward, lightly, so he wouldn't notice my distress. "I go by Sheila."
He raised his head. His face. His eyes. I was terrified. I have never seen anything like him before.
It was a human version of a snake. His eyes, red and cat-like, his tongue, almost red like blood, fork tipped. His hair was greasy like he didn't know what a shower was. Though miraculously, he didn't smell what so ever. He had human-like scales scattering across his cheekbones. Fleshy scales. I almost gagged at the thought.
"A shadow wolf." I heard him mumble under his breath. My hairs stood on end. I didn't like him knowing what I am.
"Yes indeed, what are you I might ask." I tucked my hands together in front of myself.
"I am a dragon.I just want to say hello at the banquet, then that..." there was a pause in his words, "...incident happened. So I knew your mate wouldn't let me close, no matter if I am an old friend of his."

"So I left, and I got caught up here, admiring the tree, and then I heard the door open and I saw you as you walked in. You look quite distressed."
I just shook my head, laughing, "I guess I was." After he jumbled his night away to me, he seemed more like a normal person. A bumbling, sweet, person. He seemed so scary before.
"Are you feeling better now?" He took a step back, trying to give me space.
I shrugged, "I guess so," I smiled, relaxing my body. "Now, was there a special reason you wanted to meet me?"
"Oh!" His eyes lighted up. "I wanted to ask you something." I tilted my head to the side. I circled my wrist, telling him to continue.
"Was it hard being a shadow wolf surrounded by werewolves?" Oh, I wasn't expecting that as a question.
"Uhm well, it was pretty lonely. I didn't really live in the pack." I look at the tree. "Care to walk and talk?" I gesture with my hand towards the tree. He bobbed his head and we started walking.
"Oh, you lived in isolation. I did too."
"You did? Why?" My eyebrow perked up with curiosity. I put my foot on the first step of the steps, side by side with Selven.
"I'm the product of a forbidden relationship." He looked away from me as if it was a shame. "A human and a dragon. That's why I look like this." He touched his fleshy scales. "I have no dragon form, nor a human form. I'm the hybrid between the two." My heart twisted for him.
Even I was scared of him. I rested my hand on his shoulder. "We are in the same boat." He looked at me and I looked up at him. His snake eyes snapped towards me. "When I get mad, my eyes, do this wonky thing,

And these black shadows seep from my skin." I raised my hand. I made the flames appear and flicker towards the leaves above.
The golden lanterns made him almost glow. Sure, he was no way near the most beautiful creature. Though he is nowhere near the worst creature I've met. I liked him. "I should have been dead."
We stopped at the top of the tree. "I should have been as well." We walked out onto the massive wooden bridge that leads to other little bridges. We looked up at the stars as we walked shoulder to shoulder.
"I'm happy you weren't." I turned to him, a smile spread across my face. "To no more isolation." I held out my hand. This was my way of saying I wanted to be friends.
"No more isolation." He gave me a shy grin and it was the most beautiful thing.
—
It was late at night. I was standing arms crossed, looking out my full window of the private room. The firework show had just ended. It was everything I thought a firework show would be. It was sad I watched it alone. I wanted to be with my mate.
I sighed and walked to the edge of my bed. I sat at the foot of the bed, feeling my butt sink into the silk sheets. They were the nicest sheets that I've ever laid in. I change into a nice champagne pink nightgown. It showed off my lengthy legs. It was held onto me by two noodle straps that went over my shoulder.
I was about to flop onto the bed and fall asleep though the sound of knocking sparked energy into me. I took a sniff of the air and knew exactly who was on the other side of that white wooden door.
"Sheila," Zaivinth's voice spoke through the door. "Can we," There was a pause as if he needed to rethink what he was going to say. "Can we talk, please?" My shoeless feet slapped the marble floors. I placed my hands on the ridiculous golden handle.
I pulled it open to see my Mate. He was wearing the same close from tonight. Nothing seemed different, besides the fact that his hair looked like he ran his hand through it one too many times.
He raised a hand, as if he was trying to stop me from talking. "One, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that earlier." I nodded in understanding. "Two, you're right," I know I'm right. I'm always right. "If someone needs to go somewhere we together." I nodded my head again, firmly.
"Three," his face dropped into a serious look.
"There has been a threat on your life."
—
Oh yikes, a threat.

The Stormcrow Cycle
Once a powerful and lauded witch, Ba'an salu-Ba'an now lives alone in a cave in the desert, waiting to die. When she rescues an outlander from certain death she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of politics and empire, of heart and soul, but worst of all--of hope and love and a chance at a peaceful future. Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
