《The House Keeper》14.

I woke a few hours later, my eyes fluttered open. It took me several minutes to gather all my senses.

I was on my side, my left hand on something hard. I moaned quietly as I felt the weight on my legs.

Then I realised my hand was on Oliver's chest, wait, so was my head as I slid it back to look at his face. His leg was wrapped around mine and his left arm under me and that hand holding me. I couldn't move out off this without waking him.

I froze. I don't even get this wrapped up with Percy. I stared at Oliver as he turned his head to me as he opened his eyes.

"Morning." He whispered lazily before the reality of the situation hit him too.

I sat up, allowing him his arm back as I looked at the fire place. The fire was out, just red hot coals left.

"Finally!" I heard a small shriek as a body jumped between me and Oliver. I rubbed my eyes and looked at the kid.

"What's up buddy?" Oliver ruffled his hair.

"Come look Uncle Ollie." Cody pulled at Mr Blacks arm. Oliver got up and stretched and it was the first time I have ever seen him in night clothes.

Cody pulled him to a large window.

"Come on Monty!" Cody laughed as he grabbed my hand, yesterday's shyness long gone.

"Okay." I smiled at him as I stood up. We walked to the window and Oliver slid the curtain open. "Wow."

The windows were floor to ceiling and at least a metre deep of snow leaned against the windows.

"That explains the electricity." Oliver pointed to a large tree that had toppled over.

I excused myself and went upstairs. I went to the bathroom then the bedroom and got dressed. I looked out the shutter on the verandah and saw the full damage.

The tree had knocked down the power line that connected to this house. But the whole property was a white winter wonderland. It was majestic and beautiful. I was breathless.

Then I had an idea. I could take Cody outside later and we could play in the snow.

I went to the kitchen and decided on cheese and tomato on toast for the males and a coffee each for the adults.

I wanted to stay out of the fridge as much as possible due to the electricity. I called out to Oliver and Cody for breakfast and Cody came running in. His little dinosaurs on his pyjamas were colourful as I sat him at the small table.

Oliver then appeared with a security person and the went to the garage for several minutes.

"That should do it." Oliver said as he came back in.

"What?"

"I've got the fridge and freezer hooked up to a generator until someone can fix the power pole."

Well, I can stop stressing about the food now.

After Cody ate breakfast and I cleaned up, I went through his bag of clothes, pulling out the clothes for him to wear.

"You try and dress yourself, I'll be at the end of the hall if you need me." I spoke softly to Cody. He nodded and I left him there as I got dressed.

We were both in snow jackets and warm long pants as I tightened up Cody's shoes.

"Uncle Ollie is in the study so we are going to sneak out the kitchen door." I whispered to him as we walked down the stairs, holding hands.

"What are we doing, Monty?" Cody asked excitedly.

"We are stuck here for a day or two, so we may as well have some fun. Have you ever played in the snow?"

Cody looked up at me as I opened the back door. His hair flopped side to side as he shook his head.

"I never have either. Come on." I smiled as I carried him across the slippery path. Instead of going out the back, we went to the front. I assessed where we would play, making sure we were far away from the fallen tree and pole. It was nearly a kilometre away. The wire snapped at where it joined at the house, snapping all the way back to the pole.

"What do you want to do first?"

Cody shrugged his shoulders.

"How about a snowman?"

Cody's eyes lit up.

We rolled and molded the snow together and made our first ball. I lifted the second and third ball on top of each other and I lifted Cody up to place a stick in for a nose.

We gave him arms and used whatever we could find for eyes.

"What shall we call him?"

Cody thought about it. "Mrs Darcy."

My eyebrows raised. "Okay. Mrs Darcy."

"Can I show Uncle Ollie?"

I nodded and smiled at him. We went in the front door and took our snow covered boots off and our jackets.

Cody ran to the study and opened the door.

"No Cody! Wait!" I cried out as I chased him.

I entered the study with Oliver looking at the child. His face was warm and soft and kind towards the kid.

"Uncle Ollie! Mrs Darcy is here!" Cody giggled and took Mr Blacks hand. Oliver looked at me in confusion as he stood up.

I shrugged my shoulders and walked to them as they looked out the window, Cody pointing to our snow woman.

"Well done!" Oliver smiled at the boy.

"Cody, go get a toy from your bag." I said gently and watched him leave the room. "I'm sorry for him barging in."

"You let him play outside, in the snow?"

"Yes. We built Mrs Darcy then came in to show you." I saw his face tighten before he let out a chuckle.

"You don't know who Mrs Darcy is, do you?"

My eyes widened as I pathetically pointed to the snow woman.

"Mrs Darcy is his nanny at my parents."

"Oh. That's nice of him to name a snowman after her."

Oliver smirked as he looked back at the snow sculpture. "It's nearly a spitting image of her."

I didn't know what to make of that comment and excused myself as I left the study. I went to the kitchen and cut up an apple and placed it in a bowl then went to find Cody.

Cody was sitting on his bed with his teddy. I knocked gently as I entered. "There you are. I've been looking for you."

I showed him the bowl and he accepted it. "Was Uncle Ollie mad that I was outside?"

"What?" I asked in surprise. "No sweetheart. He wasn't mad. Why?"

"Mrs Darcy doesn't let me play outside when it's cold."

"Well, I have a secret." I said to him with a smile.

"What?"

"Can you keep a secret?"

The boy nodded his head as he bit into a piece of apple.

"I'm not Mrs Darcy. I'm Monty. I'm fun." I whispered.

Cody smiled broadly.

"But you can't go making trouble, understand?"

He nodded his head happily.

I stood up and clapped my hands. "Okay, eat that up and then we'll find something to do."

"Can we go back outside?"

I didn't want to push it with Oliver. "We'll see."

I didn't see why not. The sun was out, not a cloud in the sky.

Cody talked me into playing outside again and we made lots more of snowmen. He was sad that I called him in for lunch and I laid with him on his bed while he napped.

I brushed his hair off his face as he slept, he looked like a little cherub.

It was my first day as a nanny. I didn't realise how much energy is needed for a three year old. I didn't mind laying here with Cody, technically, I was on my break.

His little head was in the crook of my armpit as I smiled down at him. He had me thinking of my future.

I obviously wasn't going to work here the rest of my life. I would love to meet my Mr Right and have my own kids. Maybe I'll stick around for another year before moving on.

I was only twenty two, I still had plenty of time, surely.
