《DIEGO'S INNOCENCE》CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR

ERIC'S POV.

The judge sits on her seat, and the bailiff tells us all to stand. Diego and I stand up from the pubic benches, walking towards our advocates, who are seated infront of the judge.

Diego sits down before I do, his posture shows how relaxed he is. Diego looks like a king, he makes everyone in the room look like peasants, which we are.

Diego is above everyone here, he has control over everything and everyone in this room, and everyone knows it.

Diego has the power, the authority, the confidence, the money, and he knows the right people in the right places; which is a privilege that a lot of people want, and need.

I thought I could survive. I thought I would win this battle. I thought I would be on his level. I thought I could finally destroy him.

But I was wrong. I was wrong to think I could outsmart him. I was wrong when I thought I could be on his level.

I blame Bianca and Bobby. I should have never listened to them. I should have never let their words get to me.

And I also blame myself. I should have not let my greed get to me. I should have known that I would get into trouble when I heard that Diego was in a gang, a mafia.

I have done a lot of wrongs in my life. I have played with people's lives. I have done so many evil things in this life, and I am not ashamed of them, I do not think I will ever be ashamed.

I am not even ashamed of what I did to Diego, I am just embrassed and scared.

Diego has evidence of what I did, he has the recordings and I know that I am doomed. I have been arrested before, and I know that prison is not a friendly place. I have no money, and I do not know the right people.

Bianca and I lived off the money that we stole from Diego. We lived the luxurious life using the millions that belonged to Diego, and sadly the millions are now housands. Bianca and I have spent ninety nine percent of what we stole, and we are almost broke.

I will suffer and die in prison.

Bianca and I were thinking of stealing some money from Bianca's sugar daddy and my sugar mommy. But Diego's men got to us before we could. I felt nervous when I woke up in Diego's mansion, a mansion I always wanted to own. I wanted to cry when I saw that I was tied up, I wanted to kill myself when I saw Bianca with me. I knew that our secret was out when I saw that Anna and Ken were in the same situation we were in. The tears that were on Anna's face were enough evidence, the old baboons confessed everything, and now we are all in trouble.

I had a feeling that they would get exposed. I am not a religious person, but I do believe that karma is real, and I knew that the two evil bastards would be exposed one day. But I never thought karma would visit us on the same day.

I watch in silence as the bailiff does the introductions, explaining the case to the judge. He calls out to my representative after he is done.

I am nervous when my advocate stands up. The man looks confident, but I am sure he will give up when the evidence is presented.

"Your honor," My advocate does a small bow, a smile on his lips. "We are here because the defendant, Mr Diego Martino, killed my client's sister, Ms Bianca.... Ms Bianca was pregnant when she was killed. The defendant shot her in cold blood when she was eight months along,"

Gasps fill the room after Mr Smith, my advocate, utters the words. Murmurs fill the room, everyone expressing their shock. I would have been happy if this happened last month, because Diego was clueless then.

"Order in court!" The judge commands, and the room falls silent, not a single voice being heard. "Continue," The woman says, looking at Mr Smith, who nods.

"Ms Bianca was pregnant when she was shot by Mr Martino, who was her fiance at the time," The murmurs begin again, which makes the judge threaten everyone present. "Ms Bianca was my client before her unexpected death, and she did mention that Mr Martino threatened to kill her on more than one occasion. And because of this, I would like to call Mr Martino to the stand," Mr Smith continues.

I refuse to look in Diego's direction, because I know that I have already lost this case. There is no reason to fight a useless fight.

I watch as Diego stands in the small box, swearing with the Bible that is presented to him.

Mr Smith begins asking him questions, which he confidently answers. Diego's advocate does not object to anything that is being asked which makes me more nervous. Mr Smith finishes with his questions, and I can see the frustration that is on his face when he realizes that Diego did not say anything wrong. I can tell that he now understands that this case is going downhill.

Mr Smith comes to sit next to me, his posture showing how tense he is. But I do not blame the man, he will be losing after all.

Diego's advocate is called infront, and she, just like Mr Smith, begins to explain the same things that were explained, leaving out the 'threatening' part. I watch as she calls Diego infront, and he confidently answers the questions asked, not even stuttering.

Shivers pass through my body when I am called in front. I start shaking when I stand up from my seat, I feel like my legs are about to give up on me. I nervously stand in the box, swallowing hard when I am told to swear. I swear with a lot of hesitation, stuttering on every single word. I sit on the chair, feeling nervous when I see everyone looking at me.

Diego's advocate stands infront of me, greeting me, which feels like mockery. Nevertheless, I answer her greeting. The lawyer begins asking me basic questions, and I answer them with no hesitation. I almost feel good, thinking that I am being let off the hook. Almost.

"Mr Eric, what relationship did you have with Ms Bianca?" The advocate asks, making me nervous.

"I w-was her..." I clear my throat before continuing. "b-brother," I can see the small smirk on her face, which tells me that she was expecting my answer.

"Ok." The woman answers. "But why do I have papers that say that you were married?"

The murmurs begin again, everyone turning to whisper to the person seated next to them. I slowly move my eyes to my lawyer, who is sweating. I turn my head to the left, my eyes meeting Diego's, a smirk present on his face. I catch sight of Siara, who has a smile on her face, the same face I hit years ago.

I can not believe she came here, just so she can see my downfall. But I understand her. I did use, bully, insult and even hit her when she was less than fifteen. I just hope she does not open a case against me.

"Objection, your honor!" Mr Smith yells out.

"Objection overruled." The judge says, looking at Diego's advocate. "Continue," She nods at the advocate.

"Yes, Mr Eric.... I have evidence, and it says that the two of you were wed years ago,"

"Do you have the evidence right now?" The judge questions, seriousness in her voice. The advocate nods, walking back to her seat, she grabs two files, walking towards the judge, handing them over.

I watch in silence as the judge hands the files over to the bailiff.

I just hope I look good in the prison uniform.

The bailiff opens a red file, reading through it, before handing it to the judge, whispering something in the judge's ear.

"Is this all?" The judge asks, and the lawyer nods negatively.

"And these are audio recordings that will settle this case," The lawyer says, handing two tapes to the judge.

The judge accepts the tapes, handing them over to the bailiff, who walks to a audio player. The room is in silence as the recording starts playing, voices that belong to Ken and Anna being heard.

"Bianca was never pregnant,"

"She isn't even dead,"

Gasps fill the room as the recording continues to play, almost everyone in the room looks shocked.

The recording is removed minutes later, the second one beging inserted next. Shivers pass through my body when I hear my voice, the confession I made days ago being played.

I can feel my body shaking, sweat rolling down my forehead.

It takes me a second, but I finally realize that the two recordings have something in common. Neither of them have Diego's voice, it just seems like I was causally talking to someone.

"Mr Eric, what do you have to say?" Diego's advocate asks, a smile present on her face.

I turn to look at Mr Smith, wanting to ask him for help. But, Mr Smith turns his head away, I still catch the disbelief on his face, though.

"It seems you have nothing to say, Mr Eric," Diego's advocate says. "May I take my leave?" She asks the judge, who nods in acceptance.

I can see that the people are shocked, murmurs filling the room, again. And just like before, the judge orders silence.

"Whose voices were those?" The judge asks, looking at me in the eyes, which intimidates me. I want to stay silent, but I know that will not help me.

"T-that i-is my v-voice," I begin, looking at the ground. "T-the o-other two voice belong to Ken and Anna... Diego's parents,"

The murmurs begin, louder than before. I lift my head up, and everyone looks shocked, even the judge has a look of disbelief.

"Where are the two?" The judge asks. I want to lie to her, but that will just be another problem.

"They are in the car," I answer, surprising myself when I do not stummer. "They are with Bianca,"

The room still has murmurs, and I think the judge has given up on asking them to stop.

"Can you describe the car to them?" The judge asks, pointing at the police officers.

I begin to describe the car, and the police officers leave the room after I am done. The judge tells me to leave the stand, which I do with no hesitation. I sit next to Mr Smith, who rolls his eyes are me. Pathetic idiot.

The police officers are back in less than ten minutes, Bianca, Ken, and Anna in front of them.

"Are these the ones?" The officer asks, and I nod. The three have their heads bowed, and I can the tears that fall from Bianca's eyes.

I hope she chokes on them.

The guards make the three stand in front of the judge, all three of them in a line.

The judge asks them who they are, and they answer honestly, something I am thankful for. But, it seems the judge's attention is on Ken, and Anna.

"Who is Diego to you?" The judge questions. I can see the two shaking, both of them look so nervous. They might even fall to the ground.

"We are his parents," Ken answers, sounding nervous.

"Oh.... What profession are you?" The judge questions. Ken becomes silent as all eyes turn to him.

"I am a pastor," Ken murmurs, loud enough for the judge to hear. The judge nods, looking behind the couple.

"Mr Martino, can I ask you some questions?" The judge asks Diego, to which he nods.

I watch as he walks towards the front, sitting inside the box.

"Do you mind me asking about your relationship with the two?" Diego chuckles when the question is asked, shaking his head negativity. The judge looks confused with Diego's response.

"I can't tell you about something that never existed," Diego says.

"What do you mean?"

"I do not share any relationship with the two; they birthed me, but they are not my parents. The two people mistreated and abused me, and they also caused a lot of other people pain.... They are nothing but evil. And a relationship with the two is something I will never want or wish for." Diego's word sound bitter, but he also sounds truthful.

The judge looks on, shaking her head in disbelief.

"I think we need a five minutes break; I will come back with the final judgement by then." The judge states, as she stands up. The bailiff asks us all to stand, and we all obey.

We all sit down when the judge leaves the room. I stand up from my seat, walking towards the three people that look worried and scared.

I stand in front of Ken, Bianca and Anna. All of us look at each other without uttering a word, the ladies silently sobbing. I can see the sadness in everyone's eyes, we all can tell that we are doomed. Our karma has arrived.

I turn my head to the side, catching a glimpse of Diego, Siara and Hunter.

Hunter and Siara are talking with smiles on their faces, while Diego nods at everything they say.

The five minutes are up, and we all return to our seats. Ken, Anna and Bianca sit in the front roll, right behind me.

We all stand up when the judge comes back, seating down when she does.

"I have come back with the final ruling," I feel suffocated when I hear her words, sweat rolling down my forehead. I can feel the sweat in my armpits, and other parts as well.

"And I have decided that Ken and Anna will be jailed for life, with hard labor," I can hear Anna's sobs as the police officers cuff Ken and her. I watch in silence as they are dragged out of the court house. Shivers of fear pass through my body when I imagine myself in the same situation.

"And lastly, Mr Martino and Bianca," The judge says, looking at us. "The two of you will be arrested for fifty years with hard labor as well," The judge says, hitting the gavel on the surface.

My world shatters as ths judge utters the words. I knew that this would happen, but I never expected such a sentence. I will come back looking like a rat.

Tears drop from my eyes as the police officers come to cuff me, Bianca's sobs filling the room as we are dragged out.

My life is officially over.
