《DIEGO'S INNOCENCE》CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE

"So, you are saying that you and I are going to your childhood home?" I ask Hunter confusingly.

Hunter nods at me, stuffing his mouth with more of the brownies I made. He never eats like this, so it's a surprise to me. He looks stressed today.

I shake my head at him, knowing that I will not get any information from him when he is in such a condition. My head turns to Diego, my eyes taking in the fine man.

Diego, unlike Hunter, is slowly and absently eating his food. He has not said anything to me, expect the occasional goodmorning.

"Diego," I call out to him, snapping my fingers in front of him. "Are you alright?" I ask when he comes out of his daydreams.

"I'm good." He states, turning back to his plate. I can tell that he is not going to say anything else to me. But I can not seem to mind my business today, because I start thinking of ways to talk to him; to ask him more questions, till he tells me what is bothering him.

"Dieg-"

"Hurry up, please," Hunter says, interrupting me. My head nods in agreement to Hunter, and I remind myself to not prey into Diego's life.

"Diego's personal life is none of your business... Pay attention to what you are here for, and leave afterwards. You are nothing more than a wannabe lawyer, something that you aren't even good at. Mind your business, idiot." The small voice in my head whispers, reminding me of my place.

Hunter is done eating, and he is now pressing on his phone. His face has full concentration, and I can tell that he means business.

I finish eating after a few minutes, standing up at the same time that Hunter does. Diego left the dinning table a few minutes ago, and I can tell that he is not himself.

It seems like someone hurt him, he look a bit like the man I met weeks ago. He looks like someone that is about to receive bad news: and I hope I am not the one that is going to deliver the bad news to him.

Hunter tells me to follow him, and we end up going to the garage. My jaw drops on the floor when I see cars lined up, all of them expensive.

"Let's go in that one," Hunter says, walking towards the black Range Rover. I walk behind him, nervous to ride such an expensive and beautiful car.

There is a driver stationed at the door, and he opens the door for Hunter, while a guard opens the car door for me.

The interior of the car is breathtaking, I can sleep in here without minding the back pains that will follow afterwards.

The driver and guard sit in the front, and the car is driven out after we all settle in. The car is driven out of the compound, and into the main street minutes later.

I can see another car behind us, it's a mini bus, and I can tell that it belongs to Diego by the DM 1 that is on the number plate.

"Where are we going?" I ask when we arrive in the busy city. I can see cars moving around and many unfamiliar faces, something that makes me anxious.

Diego's house is in the middle of nowhere, which means I can not see the busy city, and that is something I love and hate.

I grew up seeing this, and I got used to it, which means I missed seeing it all. But I admit that living in Diego's house is peaceful, and enjoyable. I stay in my room with not a lot of human interaction, which I love. I have social anxiety, so I appreciate not seeing unfamiliar faces.

"I told you that we are going to Diego's childhood house," Hunter says, putting his phone in his pocket.

"Yeah. I know that.... But why?" I ask, folding my arms. Hunter looks annoyed with my question, and I make a kissy face at him, wanting to annoy him more, and it works because he rolls his eyes at me.

"We are going to see Anna and Ken, the people that brought Diego in this world." He says, grabbing two bottles of water from the mini car fridge.

I accept the bottle, muttering the word thank you to him. I gulp the water, realizing that I was thirsty.

"Can you tell me why? Or will I find out when we get there?" I ask, leaning back.

I know that Diego and his birth givers, as Hunter calls them, are not in good terms, which tells me that we are going there for something important.

"I have to tell you now.... I don't need you looking stupid when I say or do something crazy," I shake my head at Hunter, knowing that he is right. I will not tell him that he is right, though. Hunter already has a bit of pride, and I do not want to make him more big headed.

Hunter presses a button, and that thing that happens in movies happens; the front seat and back seats are separated by a board. I know that whatever he is about to say is private from his actions.

"Bobby told us that Anna and Ken are to blame for what happened to Diego years ago. And I thought bringing you with me might help me convince them to tell us what we need to know. And if they don't tell us anything, I already have plan B ready."

I do not know why, but Hunter's last sentence make me feel nervous. He has this coldness in his voice when he mentions Anna and Ken, which reminds me that he is a dangerous man.

"Okay... Is that why Diego looked disturbed today," I want to slap myself for being nosy, but I can not help myself. I worry about Diego even when I do not want to, and I can not help myself.

"Yes and no,"

"What do you mean by yes and no?" I question.

"Mind your business." Hunter says, at the same time the car stops moving.

A knock is heard outside Hunter's door, and the guard's face is the first thing I see when Hunter rolls down the window.

"We are here, boss," The guard says, as Hunter nods. Hunter opens the door, and I follow next, we both step out of the car at the same time.

Hunter comes towards me, standing next to me as I turn to look at a two storey house.

The first thought that comes to mind is... Wow. The place looks clean and well kept, it is the only one that looks big and clean here.

"That is where I grew up," Hunter points to the house that is next to the clean one. The house he points at looks old, it looks good but very old. I can not believe that it is where he grew up.

"And this is where Diego grew up," Hunter says pointing at the well kept house. I can believe that Diego grew up in this house by how clean and kept it looks. The place also has a garden which looks a bit dry, and the plants look dry as well: that's the disadvantage of the house.

"Shall we go closer?" Hunter suggests, and I murmur a small yes. Hunter leads me and three other guards up the tiny stairs which lead us towards the door.

We finally reach the door, and I feel happy that I wore sneakers today. The door is far from the main road.

"Give me a minute," A male voice is heard behind the door when Hunter knocks. We all wait for the door to open, and I take time to look around.

The neighborhood looks so quiet, and it seems like no one lives here. But that might be because it's lunch hour.

The door opens, making me turn around. My eyes widen when I see a man that looks like Diego in front of me, but unlike Diego he has blue eyes.

The man also looks like the one that was in the photo I saw, the only difference is the grey hair and wrinkly skin.

"How can I help you," The man asks looking at Hunter and I, his eyes lingering more on Hunter.

Hunter told me that he has not seen the man in years, so I think the man has forgotten how Hunter looks.

"I think you can.... This is my girlfriend and I, and we are here looking for a priest that can help wed us... We went to the church down the streets and they told us to come to this house." My jaw almost drops when I hear Hunter's lie. I stand stocked, snapping out of my shock when I feel a pinch behind me. I can tell that the hand belongs to Hunter because he is the only one that is standing that close to me.

I nod at the man when his eyes land on me, wanting him to believe us. The man offers Hunter and I a smile, telling us to enter the house afterwards.

The guards follow behind us, and they stand behind the seats that are offered to us.

"Can I offer you anything?" The man politely asks, making it hard for me to believe that he did everything that Hunter and Diego said he did.

"No, thank you." Both Hunter and I say, offering him small fake smiles, which he returns.

"Alright then," The man is still smiling at Hunter and I. "Can w-"

"Who was at the door?!" A familiar voice shouts, her voice coming from the room next to the one we are in.

I can hear footsteps coming near us, and a female figure comes into the living room. The female is in a blue modest dress, it reaches her ankles and it looks like those that were made in the 1910s.

"Whose this?" The woman asks, smiling at her husband.

"They are a couple that want to be wed, they are here because someone directed them to me."

"Alright." The woman turns towards us, her eyes widening when she sees the guards standing in her living room. She clears her throat, a fake smile on her lips. She turns her eyes to Hunter who looks at her, his face expressionless. She nods at him, and he does the same.

And finally her eyes land on me, and the smile slowly slips from her lips. I can tell that she can recognize me, when she looks at me angrily.

The same old bitter lady I saw weeks ago is Diego's mother.

"What are you doing in my house?"
