《DIEGO'S INNOCENCE》CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

"Are you sure about this?" I ask sitting on the bed. "Do you think it's true?... Do you think he would betray Diego?" I pull the blanket till my neck as I continue, the cold is freezing my ass off.

"Yeah. You and Diego left before we could finish the file.... and though it was diffult, I decided to finish studying the file." Hunter says sitting across from me. He is sipping from a can of beer while I sip on my grape juice, which is underneath the blanket.

Hunter brought me the beverage when he came inside the room, at four am. It seems like he loves eating unhealthy foods, even though he looks like a bodybuilder.

"I wanted to tell Diego about it, but I do not want to stress him. And it doesn't help that he is hidden behind that office of his... I tried to talk to him about it, but I just can't get to him.... He is just nodding and humming when I ask him a question, and it is fucking worrisome. I don't know if it's because of what we found out yesterday, but I just want to help him heal... even if his feelings get hurt in the process." Hunter murmurs looking at the can with helplessness, and tiredness.

"That's the difficult and sad part; Healing brings so much pain to a person, it's like an injection of some sort. The prick will hurt at first, maybe for some days or weeks. But atleast you will get better faster," I mumble forcing a tiny smile on my face, hoping to lighten the sad and dull environment.

"Yeah. Let's just hope he doesn't rub the area of the prick, because the area will start itching and aching for a long time."

We sit in silence after Hunter utters the words, both of us deep in thoughts. I can hear the birds chirping outside, the sunrise showing from the window.

Diego really has good taste, and I adore his love for nature.

Every part of the house has flowers, and I can tell that the flowers are changed regularly. They all look fresh and beautiful.

"You know something?" Hunter leans his head on his hand, his elbow leaned on his thigh. I raise my eyebrows at him, folding my arms underneath the blanket.

"I don't even think that Diego is hurt with the betrayal," Hunter begins sipping from the beer can. "I think he is more focussed on the children that were involved.... Diego looks cold from the outside, but he really loves children, and I think the children's deaths are the cause of his gloomy mood."

The kiss that happened yesterday, and the words I said are also to blame, Hunter.

My mind goes back to what happened yesterday, my finger unconsciously moving to touch my lips.

I crave the feeling that I got when my lips met those of Diego. I wish he could kiss me again.

But I know that my wish will be just that... a wish.

The sadness that I saw in Diego's eyes yesterday is like a reminder of how stupid I am.

Cause how the fuck did I want to stay professional when I finally tasted the hot man's lips?

I can feel a shiver in my body as the words I uttered come back to mind. My head feeling heavy with how dumb I behaved. I know that I like Diego, but I do not know what happened.

I understand why my mind calls me stupid, I am just that most times.

I wish I can take back the words that I said. I really want to see Diego's inviting eyes again, I really miss them a lot.

"But I know that he will be sad and angry when he learns about the father of the child... I can't believe we trusted that guy. I know that he didn't want to be part of this family, but neither Diego nor I forced him to join. We thought he was man enough, but I guess he is nothing more than a pretending sad fake bitch." The bitterness that is in Hunter's voice can kill a nation. No wonder people hide from him.

"I guess you are right. Mr Martino looks like the type that can set a building on fire, because of a betrayal. And I know that I have never seen him angry, but I do not think he can do anything wrong to him." I mutter, hoping that Hunter tells me something about Diego. And just like I hoped, he does.

"I don't think you would want to see him angry," Hunter mutters putting the can away. "Diego is a nightmare when he is angry... He is slow to anger, but evil when he is."

Hunter's words make me swallow, feeling scared and a little nervous.

"I remember when we were younger," Hunter continues with a small noticeable smile on his face.

"He hit a person so badly when we were younger... The person was black, just like you and I. But the person had this ego and gangster attitude, he was a bully to everyone in the neighborhood, except Diego. No one wanted to mess with Diego, because he always looked upset and closed off, while I was the playful one. The guy came running to me one day, and he hit me in the face because his girlfriend was looking at me. I was waiting for Diego to meet me by the roadside when it happened, and luckily he did show up. Diego was coming from behind the guy. He beat the guy up for not only hitting me, but for also calling me nasty names. Diego and I grew up in a bad neighborhood, but we protected each other. Diego is the one that even taught me how to fight, it was diffult at first, but he had patience with me."

"Wow." I say after Hunter is done speaking. "It's crazy how our own people kill and hurt each other... Like we are the same skin, but we end up being against each other and all. We preach about protecting black lives, when we ourselves are against each other, and that's so sad and crazy." I mumble, remembering the news I saw the other day; a man killed his fellow black person because of a petty issue, and he is not the only person that has done this.

"Yeah, that's the sad part; people do not always follow what they preach. They tell you what they want you to hear, or for popularity, or just to fit in. But their hearts and actions speak a different story."

I agree with Hunter, looking at him as he unlocks the phone, calling someone with it.

Hunter hushes me when the person picks up the call, which makes me go silent. I decide to look at Hunter as he invites the person over, his voice having fake joy.

Hunter's eyes are bloodshed from not only the beer, but from lack of sleep. It is my job to help free Diego, but Hunter is doing the work, which is kind of upsetting and sad.

I hear part of the conversation, swallowing hard when I realize who he is talking to. I can tell that the person has accepted to come to the house by the smile on Hunter's face.

I confirm that Hunter is talking to Bianca's baby's father when he mentions the name of the person.

I can tell that this will be a long morning.
