《DIEGO'S INNOCENCE》CHAPTER TWO

I reach the supreme jail twenty minutes later.

My palms become sweaty when I see the big electric steel fence and gate. The fence and gate are very tall, it's difficult to see what is inside.

I keep staring at the gate, averting my eyes from it when I see a man standing near my car.

I wonder where he came from, because I did not see him come out of the gate. This place is weird and dark.

I roll my window down, goosebumps of fear evident on my body. The man looks really scary, he has on those black cop uniforms, his face lacking an expression and he also has scars on his face.

"What are you doing here? And who are you looking for?" The black man asks, his words making me swallow hard in nervousness and fear.

I silently look around me, I can now see the many men that surround this place. I feel like hiding when I see all of them with guns, same goes to the one standing near me.

"Are you going to answer me?" The man asks, I can hear the irritation in his voice.

I clear my throat, placing my hands on my legs right next to the knife I always carry; just in case he shoots, I stab as well.

I can not go down without a fight even if I am fighting for justice. My parents have taught me self-defense, how to shoot and how to use a knife.

We live in a world of evil, and you have to know how to fight; especially for black people like me.

The knife is very small, no one can see it: and if they do, they will think it is a car key or toy.

"I am here to see a client," I hear myself say, hiding my fear. I want to be a lawyer, so, showing fear is out of the question. "I am an intern at Grand's Law firm, and my boss and senior lawyer told me to come here."

The man looks at me with an intense look after I am done talking, it's like he wants to see if I am lying.

I inhale waiting to see his next move, my hand moving closer to the pocket knife that is in my boots.

My finger comes in contact with the knife, but I end up releasing it when I see the man nod.

I exhale as I see him move away from the car, I watch as he tells a guard to open the gate.

The man gives me a go ahead when the gate is fully opened, which makes me happy for a second.

I drive my car inside the dark looking place. The place looks clean, but it is all black and creepy.

I can see chains, torture machines and a lot more as I drive near the parking lot.

'This place looks pretty good,' My sarcastic inner voice says. 'your dumb ass wanted to be a lawyer; and here we are, at a place full of dangerous criminals.'

I want to punch myself because of how dumb I sound.

Why is the human mind so negative? I wish I can clean mine for a second or two.

I choose to ignore myself, parking the car at the only available space. I breath in relief when I see that I am safe; I decide to grab my phone, so I can call the boss.

I see another message from him before I can unlock my phone. The man has told me to call the lawyer assigned to me, he has sent a number as well.

I tap on the number, calling the senior lawyer, hopefully he or she is already here.

The phone keeps ringing without anyone picking up, but I keep calling till I hear a male voice on the other end.

We exchange formalities, I also explain who I am to him and I finally decide to ask him where he is.

"I am at the office, didn't the boss tell you?" I hear his annoying voice ask.

"Tell me what?"

"All interns need to do the work alone. You only call me when you choose to give up." The man says, with a matter of fact voice.

"No one told me that." I state, nervousness in my voice, my body feeling sweaty and my palms feel itchy.

"I have told you now," The man says, annoyance in his voice. "I have to go now. Good luck and be safe."

I feel helpless as I hear the beep, a clear sign that the man has cut the phonecall.

I nervously look ahead at the big building. I wonder why I have such bad luck?

What started out as a good day has left me speechless in less than five hours. I wish I got some coffee on my way here, it would have relaxed me.

I decide to cry about it later when I see the man from before. He is looking at my car, and I am afraid that he might become suspecious. I have been sitting inside the car for five minutes now, which might seem weird to him.

I mentally roll my eyes before I deciding to leave my things in the car, hiding them in the backseat, my windows are tinted so no one can see inside the car.

I breath in and out before stepping out. I close my car door, digging my fingernails in my palm as I walk closer to the building.

I see a woman standing at the door with what seems to be a register in hand, she is also in all black, her body is also very muscular and she has cut her hair with tattoos on her head.

I stand in front of her, waiting for her to acknowledge me. She must feel my presence because she lifts her head up, looking at me with annoyance written all over her face.

"What?" She asks, making me roll my eyes mentally, again.

The disrespect in this place is really unexplainable. How can the prisoners be safe if the people assigned to them are this rude?

"I am here as an intern lawyer. I was told to ask around here for my client." I explain, wanting to slap her for looking at me with judgmental looks.

I know that there are not a lot of lawyers around here, especially female ones. This town thinks that gender inequity is necessary, only a few think otherwise.

The men and women here usually think like the old days, and I hate that.

"You must be Siara Rowland's," the woman says. "All the lawyers and interns are already here. Let me call the person that will take you to your assigned client."

I watch as the woman calls a male guard, his face unlike the others has a smile.

"Can you please take her to Diego Martino's cell," The woman commands.

The man nods, I can see that his smile is now forced and he is shivering as well.

Diego Martino, a name that has brought fear in people's lives.

I feel goosebumps on my body as I finally take in that I will be assigned to the most feared man in the city.

"Good luck, Siara. You will need it." The woman tells me, a small smile on her face, making my insides melt.
