《A Mate for the Latecomer》Chapter 34: Traitors

The news of Cascarade Pack being wiped out by rogues and hunters made me feel so many different emotions and I am drowning inside.
I shouldn't feel this way for them, however, the bad deeds done by others do not define the innocent people and young pups that were living in the Cascarade pack.
It was hard to understand how the massacre happened and why we were never being informed about it but when Jay explains to us what happened we then understood. He told us that the Cascarade Pack was attacked on the same day, and the rogues tried to kidnap me. It was a surprise attack that no one was prepared for it and so none of the neighboring and allied packs were informed. The wounded warrior that was carried in here, is the only survivor that has been on the runs from the rogues and hunters for days.
I can imagine the horror the warrior went through and I hope he survives as his condition is too critical at the moment.
"Jea created the barrier but how did the hunters make it through?" Aaron's questions made me perk up and glance at him. He is tapping his hand on the desk. It's been an hour since we all were called for a meeting in his office and I am surprised that they let me stay this time.
"I guess she's not powerful enough," I casually said and Jea slams her hands on the table making me jump a bit. I'm not scared but I don't want to be turned into a deer or even worse, a caterpillar.
'I thought you had some practice to kick her ass,' teases Eliz. She then wags her tail before she pokes out her tongue at me.
I know, she still hates me for kissing Aaron.
"This is unacceptable, I don't know any of the witches back at the mountains who know how to break the barrier," Jea groans with frustration.
"Maybe you missed a step while creating it," I said and I should have been careful with my mouth. Yet I cannot seem to shut it up.
Eric's pacing around in the office is a bit of a distraction for everyone and me. I mean he is taking our focus away from the main issue. When he stops, everyone looks at him.
"Unless there is a traitor," he said. Everyone in the room nods in agreement and for the first time, I also agree with him. "And we don't have any clue at all" he added before resting on a chair near Aaron's desk.
I am deep in my thoughts when Claire, Lucian, and Jea's gaze falls on me. I furrow my brow and stare back at them. I see Claire whispering something to Jea and that is when I realized what they are thinking. They are assuming and accuse me of being the traitor.

"Damn you three, don't forget the hunters are after me" I call them out and they look away with shame.
"How d-" My words were cut off by Eric's intervention.
"Sorry, Aaron but we're taking leave this instant for my pack. Claire, we need to go," he said, getting up from his chair. Aaron only nods at them before they began to walk out of the room. Lucian moves together with them in a hurry. They went straight to their vehicles without packing their bags or for another goodbye.
I hate seeing them but I am glad that they are gone. It would be great if Jea had gone with them but the witch decided to stay here with us.
~~~
It was night time and there was still no news from the Daluna's pack. Aaron drops by my room a while ago to check on me before going to his office to discuss business with Conrad. I bid him goodbye and I was about to close my eyes when Eliz begs to go for a run. I protested at first but Eliz knows me too well. So in the end, she won and here we are scavenging our way in the woods.
"Eliz, should we stop here and go back?" I ask her but she says no. "Eliz," I said to her in a sleepy voice.
"We're almost at the border," she tells me but I wasn't interested. "If it's Eric at the border, you better reverse right here and take us back," I warn her.
"Not everything is about Eric. I am only trying to complete my laps," she defensively said and I held up a right flag in surrender to her. I stay back and relax while she takes the lead.
We were nearer to the border, and Eliz decided to shift into our mundane form. I stretch out my arms and legs to let loose for a moment.
"Now isn't this great. Fresh air, Fresh mind, right Elle" says Eliz.
"Yep," I reply shortly to her and am about to add something sarcastic when Eliz tells me to be quiet for a second as we're not alone.
"What?" I ask and shush me up again and listen to our surroundings.
It's funny how I am hearing things. Eliz urge me to move and follow the noise and I didn't protest as I want to know what was behind the bushes. However, before we get closer to the noises I ask her to mask our scent which she did. We hid behind one of the bushes when we hear two voices harshly whisper yells to one another.
I ask Eliz to mask our scent and move a little closer to a secluded area in the darkness.
"I will never have feelings for someone like you. I am not even close to liking you," I hear a male say in anger.
"But you said you love me" the female replies which made me wonder where I hear these voices from. They are so familiar to my ears.
"Pathetic," says the male, and I lean in a little bit closer. "It was fun using you. How I wished it was Elle. Too bad you're nothing like her. Jea it was fun using you."
I instantly take another step upon hearing mine and Jea's names. I move stealthily as I wanted to identify the male. I cock my head to the side to get a better view. His back is facing me and somehow I have a feeling that I know him very well.
"Too bad you can only bring in 100 hunters through the border," Jea snarls at him. His hands went straight to her neck and I almost move forward to help her when Eliz command me not to do it.
"They won't be able to leave, trust me. The hunters can never go back," she said as she struggles to breathe.
He loosens his grip, throwing her to the ground. Jea gasps for air. "Why are you doing this?" Jea asks and coughs.
"Isn't it obvious I want my mate to be happy? This is for h for her and our future."
Jea cowers back holding onto her neck as the unknown male moves toward her. Damn it! why can't I see his face?' I curse and try to get a clear view of his face.
"Yes she's a hunter, can you believe it a werewolf hunter. Elle and Jay happened to murder her only family but I know that they didn't. So, we are taking this on everyone. Hope you love how we kind of run this thing" he said in a hoarse voice.
"By killing your kind?" Jea snaps back at him and he slaps her real hard. I want to help, but Eliz holds us back, saying it's too risky. It's hard to believe whether they are putting on an act or this is real.
"My mate and I will conquer this lands, we'll be the Queen and King. I despise our kind and I can't wait to see Eric and that prick Aaron begging for my mercy," he said with so much determination.
"You're crazy...you psycho!" Jea yells at him and I want to know why she is not using her witch powers.
'She's in love' was all Eliz said and I ignore it and focus on Jea.
"Oh, and you did enjoy sleeping with the psycho throughout this one month. One night and I was able to bend you and your stupid barrier," the male mocks her. He laughs at her.
"Jea bringing you back and pretending everyone around was all part of the plan. We just needed to buy time so that we can have a large number of hunters and rogues combined. Our constant attack was only for distractions. Now we're solid, you need to go sweetie, and wait for the arrival of the others," he explains and that's when everything comes together in my head.
"You can't take down the entire barrier. It's fixed even if you kill me now," Jea coughs and continues to say, "I curse you by the moon-"
I move to help her but the male grabs her with his hand. He is quick enough to rip out her heart. I halt in my steps.
"Jea" I whisper and he turns around immediately. He looks shocked at me standing not far from him and Jea's dead body.
'It can't be,' I mumble. "Alpha Zeus."
Eliz who easily detects his next move quickly takes control of my body and we sprint back to the pack house. We couldn't mind linking anyone, totally not the Alphas so Eliz and I howled our wolf's cry just for those on the borders nearby to be alert.
We keep on running and glance backward to see if Zeus is still chasing after me. I didn't see where we going and I stumbled upon a rock and fell forward. I roll down the hill hitting the ground and I scream out in pain.
"Ahhhh," I cry in pain as I try to move my legs. I try to stand up but I couldn't as my head starts spinning too.
"Elle"
I hear a voice shouting our name and I bit my bottom lip to suppress my painful scream, hoping that the traitor won't hear me.
"Elle" I hear my name being called again and at that time I felt myself slipping into consciousness. And one thing I hope for is someone from Aaron's pack to find me before Zeus does.
Thank you again for all your support. I know the book isn't more focused on romance and has no smut scene but I wanted it to be that way. I want this one to be told in one pov and to be more focused on the protagonist instead of rebounds and other stuff.
Thank you again for reading and voting.
