《A Mate for the Latecomer》Chapter 26: Everybody Talks

I put a hand to my beating heart while Eliz continues to laugh at me for being too sure with the boys. I ignore her laughter and made my way to the front door of the house. I know Aaron forbids me not to go anywhere without his approval but he is not my Alpha and, I want to take a walk.

I almost made it to the door when I collided with an elderly woman. She struggled to balance herself making her fall down. I quickly apologize and help her up. "I am sorry madam."

"It's alright dear," she said as tried to reach for the basket on the floor that is filled with a white cloth. "Let me," I said and reached out for it instead.

"Wow, it's kind of heavy" I mutter and lift it with my hands. The old madam stretches her back before she politely asks me to hand it over.

"I can help carry it for you" I suggested because not only did I feel bad for her but she reminded me of my late grandparents. I wasn't joking when I said the basket is heavy.

"Who are you?" she curiously asks me.

"Just an unwanted visitor of Alpha Aaron." I gleam at her hoping she would agree. She thought for a minute before looking back at me and said, "okay but are you sure?"

"Yes, I am sure mam," I answer with a smile on my face. She let out a relieved sigh. "Very well dear, you need to take it to the pack hospital."

"Hospital?" I ask, hoping she would get the hint and give me the location which thankfully she did and without another minute to waste I went there straight away.

"Excuse me, Carrie called me... are those?" one of the healers asks and she trails off once she sees me. I am not so sure whether it's the basket or me she's looking at. However, the reaction around me is enough for me to know why she trailed off when I appeared.

The eyes of the pack members in the hospital hallway were set on me. I could hear some of the words whispered around me. They were not very nice to hear. I also detect some female wolves' holding on tight to their mates' arms once they saw that there is no mark on my neck.

Nodding my head and ignoring them I handed the healer the basket which snap her out of her trance. She blinks her eyes and looks at me than the basket in her hands. "Oh dear, I am sorry for that but would you kindly tend to one of our warriors?" she asks me.

I thought of declining her request because I didn't like the way her pack members were judging me with their eyes. "Umm, I am sorry but I don't know how-"

Too late as she grabs me by the hand and leads me into a ward with wounded male warriors. She shows me the basic steps before she disappears outside of the ward. I stood there, contemplating what to do. One part of me is telling me to go and the other is saying that my parents won't be happy if they know that I am turning into a cold-hearted bitch. In the end, my good side wins. I decided to stay and help her out. I tended one of the werewolf warriors' wounds, patching up his arm.

Afterward, he then moves to help another one. The healer came back and she smiles when she sees that I am nursing the warriors. "Thank you," she said, helping me batch up the last patient's wounds.

A heel sound clicked on the tile and a voice from behind me made us stop what we were doing. "Umm I'm sorry, you are?" I turn to a blonde female in her classy summer dress and her expensive perfume scent filling the air.

"Apologies Armenia she's the guest at the Alpha's place," the healer explains and I am not surprised that she knows me. After all, I am the only stranger roaming around their pack grounds.

The blond female quickly drags the healer by the arm outside, leaving me there. I look down at the warrior sleeping in peace and then around the peering eyes of the patients and their families. I smile and then walk towards the door to get out of there. I stopped when I heard the blonde's voice at the door.

"You better not let that whore touch him. Didn't you know that she's the one from Cascarade who sleeps around with the un-mated wolves? Don't let those filthy hands touch him again. You better watch out for your mate too" she warns the healer.

I am getting tired of hearing these same false accusations. I clench my hands into fists and made myself known to them. The healer's eyes widen and try to shush the blond. She was begging her not to say anything. However, the blond wouldn't keep her mouth shut.

"What?" she half yelled at the poor healer and she turn around to find me standing there.

I scoffed and asked her, "are you done?" She glares at me and everyone in the hallway begins to murmur again.

"Have you seen me sleep with them? Were you there when it happened?" I ask again and she didn't say anything. Her lips were tightly zipped. It reminded me of the version of other women who like to run their mouths but are tongues tied and scared when facing the demon alone.

She tries to look brave but my death glare at her made her cower back. Eliz too started to turn wolfy and I stop her before she jumps to destroy the blonde's doll face.

"Exactly, next time get your facts straight," I said with seriousness lace in my tone. I bump into her shoulder and went back to the pack house.

When I reach the pack house, I shut the front door and try to calm myself. I let out a heavy sigh and walked toward the kitchen to get myself some water. I need it to calm my nerves. However, loud voices from the kitchen made me stop.

I hate gossip. I thought and closed my eyes while hearing the women in the kitchen talking. "Oh my god, so she's the one! No wonder why she's not mated," one of them says and I peek inside to find the lady that I helped earlier chatting with her group of friends. "It was right of Eric to mate Claire," said the other. "Oh my, she would make a horrible mate. The werewolf's race knows all about it" announced the other.

I could feel my eyes hot with tears and ready to tear them apart. I hate them but I cannot go lower than them. I decided not to become like them. Turning around I came face to face with Aaron's hard look. I could tell that he is filled with rage and he is ready to blow my ears for going against his rules.

"Are you okay?" he asks and his expression softens when he sees my face.

Holding back my tears and without breaking down in front of him I reply, "I think so."

I walk away from there and made my way back to his office. There was no one inside. I assume they are taking a break. I sat down on one of the chairs, putting my head slowly lies on the table. My emotions running high, and I want to disappear now. I could hear voices coming through the door then followed by laughter.

The door opens and footsteps were heard. My hand drew circles on the table not bothering to welcome the guests who stood before me.

"I guess we shall see each other again" Eric's voice made me look up and I see him shaking Aaron's hand.

"Elle" he turns to me once he realized that I am in there. "Elle" I see the concern on his face but I don't respond. Standing up I walk past them and make my way out of the office and the pack house.

I hear a familiar voice calling my name but I continued to walk away from the pack's ground. I walk past their cemetery area and make it to the other field. Lying down on the ground I begin to reminisce about the important people who knew me best.

"I miss my parents" I whisper. They were my only sanity in this world.

"How many times do we have to stand up, only to be thrown down again? I miss them, what's our purpose again for living in this world?" I ask Eliz and started to sob.

'You haven't lived your life yet Elle' Eliz reminds me. 'It's never the end for us, and don't you dare care about what they say,' she tries to comfort me but as her human host, I am too hurt and tired of everything.

I pull my legs and hug them close to my chest burying my head between my knees.

I hear leaves rustling and the sound of footsteps before I felt someone sitting down beside me. I peek to the side to find Aaron next to me. My brain is almost wrecking from the thought of Aaron being close to me. I wasn't expecting him to be here. Yeah, it's not like I expect Eric at all to be here for me too.

"I know why you're here" he speaks and I just sat there, listening.

"When Claire never gave me a second chance people looked at me with pity and they started talking." Aaron looked as if he were in pain as he continues to speak "I'm sorry for my pack's behavior today. You should never let them get to your head."

He pauses, letting out a heavy sigh before he continues. "People will always talk but believe me it will die down."

I felt his warm hand on my shoulder and for a second I was comforted by his words. I didn't know this Alpha has a gentle side to him. "You'll be okay," he said and I look aside to see him smile which made me smile a little.

"You know Alpha you should smile often," I said and got up from the ground. I look down at him. "It definitely suits you." And with that being said, I walk back in the pack direction.
