feel free to curse me out!!
JEYRI
✍︎︎
The room was dark when I opened my eyes. I must have fallen asleep after this morning. The other side of the bed was cold, missing the warmth of the other body beside me. I hugged my arms to my chest as I sat up from the covers. How long have I been asleep? These last few days, I haven't been getting much sleep in and a lot of that has to do with Gio but...
Where was he anyway?
The window had been blown open, letting in the cold night air. I swung my legs off the bed and stood up. I wrapped the sheets over my naked body and closed the frames. I made sure to lock it this time. It wasn't that unusual but my parents are often picky about leaving it open for the dust to blow in.
What time is it? I squinted my eyes against the light as I moved into the bathroom. I had to feel around for the switch but I flicked it on. I slid on the bathrobe hanging on the hooks and pulled my hair back into a loose ponytail. I looked a mess and the hickeys decorating my neck didn't make it any lessons. I let my hair back down after second thought and went back out into the room.
A yawn left my lips and I rubbed my eyes. Shit, I feel so tired...
The sound of breaking glass shot me to life. I jumped at the noise and my eyes widened. Everything I'd so easily pushed to the back of my mind for since we've been here was starting to come back. My parents... Lucifer... The threat...
Did he find us? But how?
With my heart beating fast in my chest, I opened the room door as slowly as I could manage, taking care to not let it creak. Chills ran down my spine as I stepped out of the room. The hall was dark and only the light illuminating from the bottom of the staircase could be seen. My feet felt grounded to the floor as if they were refusing to step forward.

Part of me wants to run back into the room and hide. The other part of me tells myself that I'm just overreacting and there's nothing to be worried about. It could be anything. Right?
I descended the steps slowly, every little sound causing me to pause in my movements. The closer I got to the bottom the more my mind was telling me to go the fuck back to where I was before.
But these are my parents we're talking about. What kind of daughter would I be?
The living room was empty and everything looked as it should be. It's only when I neared the kitchen, I noticed the small trail of blood on the floor. Blood is never a good sign. My heart jumped out of my chest when I saw a figure standing in the darkness. The only light reflecting into the house was coming from the moon and I could see him holding something sharp in his hands.
I would have screamed— I nearly did, had I not realized that it was just Gio standing there.
"Jeyri... You're awake," he whispered, hiding his hand behind his back.
"Why'd you let me sleep for so long?"
"You were tired. It can't be helped... I doubt you've been getting much sleep as of late, so it was good for you."
I glanced down at the blood then back up at him, hoping there was some sort of explanation for it.
"I dropped a glass," he told me, holding up the hand he'd hidden just a few seconds before. I let out a breath of relief and he chuckled. "Didn't mean to scare you."
"God... I thought I was going to find someone dead..." I mumbled running my hands over my head. "Fuck..." I really do need rest. My head hurts on a different level right now. "We have to clean this up... What were you doing down here anyway?"
"Nothing," he said quickly. "I just wanted a glass of water. I put it too close to the edge and it shattered. I was getting the glass up just now and ended up cutting myself. I was trying to find something to clean it all up with but I just made a bigger mess than necessary."

He moved toward me before I could step toward him. "It's all fine really. Besides my hand at least..."
Why do I get the feeling he's hiding something? Any other time he probably would have shrugged something like that off. I've seen this man shot up, a cut is nothing for him.
"Oh, right... We can go upstairs. There should be something in the bathroom for it. I'll bandage it for you."
"Come then. Let's go."
It wasn't all that bad as I expected. When we got back upstairs to the bathroom, all I needed to do was stop the bleeding and wrap his hand with something.
He sat down on the bed as I shuffled through the drawers beneath the sink to find the bandages. I clapped my hands once I found them and walked back into the room where he was. He looked up from his hands as I walked toward him and he smiled. "So, did you rest well?"
"Yes." I nodded, crouching down in front of him. "Hand please." He held it out to me.
"Dream of anything?"
"Not really."
"Oh... That's a shame."
"What did you do the whole day?"
"Hmm well, I spoke with your parents for a time..." He purposefully left out anything that had anything to do with the city. I chose not to pry further, if anything, I probably wouldn't know what it is he wasn't saying. My mind's had enough horror to last a lifetime.
"About what?" I asked and he shrugged. "You."
I paused and looked up at him. "Oh?"
"I don't get why you would ever leave here. You have everything I wished I had: a good home, a loving family... Your parents... they care about you. Why would you leave a place like this and go off to a big city where you'd be alone and away from all this?"
I sighed. "I guess that doesn't make much sense, huh? I guess I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it... That I could leave. No one ever leaves this place; they just grow up here and spend the rest of their days in the same town, around the same people, doing the same shit every day. I wanted my life to be more than that... more exciting..." I chuckled. "I guess I got more than what I bargained for. Sounds crazy, doesn't it?"
"Maybe. Maybe it isn't. Everyone's born with their own destiny."
"You believe in that? Destiny?"
He shrugged. "I believe it can change... just like people do."
I looked down at his hands and traced my thumb over his palm. "What about you? What do you think your destiny is?"
He laughed, catching me off guard, and shook his head. "Me? Who knows?"
"Would you ever, you know... quit being in the Mafia?"
He let out a tired sigh and I looked up at him, studying his reaction. There wasn't much to his expression, only a distant look somewhere in his eyes. He smiled but it didn't seem all that real to me. I half-expected him to say 'there is no quitting' or something along the lines of that but he shrugged his shoulders once more. "Who knows?" he repeated.
I wasn't quite sure what to make of that but I didn't want to keep prying so I left it at that. I turned my attention back to wrapping up his hand and he smiled when I finished.
"Grazie, tesoro."
"You're welcome."

Beyond the Bridge
There are many worlds, many multiverses, and you can move between them via the Federation's Bridge network - magical gateways to other worlds. The world dubbed "C'thon" by its inhabitants - or Gamma-Theta-Nu-649, if you ask the Federation's bureaucracy - was deserted when the Federation found it. The "civilized" races had all died out centuries prior, and the wilderness had grown downright feral in their absence. Now, the lonely Federation outpost of Bridgetown is under constant threat from the hungry wildlife, malicious fey, territorial goblins, and wandering undead that surround it. The town's distance from the Federation's centers of power means that it gets precious few of the resources that it needs to stay safe and afloat. Enter the Guild of Adventurers, a plucky and disparate crew who do the Federation's dirty work in exchange for coin. One team, the first of many, crosses the Bridge to C'thon looking for fame, fortune, and (if they're lucky) the answer to a newly-discovered Prophecy. They'll get much more than they bargained for, although first they need to avoid being eaten by the local wildlife. Updates weekly on Wednesday. Chapters will be as long as they need to be for them to work, which means they can vary. If anything drops below 2500 words, I'll post an extra chapter if I have one ready. [PS: This is not a litRPG, but I do borrow heavily from TTRPGs for inspiration, and the general setting and storyline is from a TTRPG campaign I'm running.] [PPS: This is my first attempt at writing long-form fiction. I'm not trying to make a great piece of literature or have a multi-novel overarching plot, but hopefully it'll still be a fun story - let me know what you think in the comments.] [PPPS: Cover image is from a free-download wallpaper by Tyler Edlin; I do not own it, and will take it down immediately if requested.]
