《Hush | on hold》꧁ ᴏɴᴇ ꧂

I fell asleep so I'm posting this late I-
I didn't think I would ever die so young. I had plans, big plans. I'd graduate from college, get a high paying job, start living the good life with my man and two kids- I mean... The normal stuff. So how the fuck did I end up in this situation?!
I covered my mouth as I hid behind the racks of food in the store. I could hear the men arguing up in the front where the register was. The store manager was crying out for his dear life and I was the only other civilian in the store. I came to work like I usually did... I finally found a nice part-time job that would hire me and I was doing fine here until now.
"I thought I told you that I wanted my money today. I remember saying something like that. I did, didn't I Sebastian?" I heard a deep voice say and then another in response to his.
"I think you did, Gio."
I could hear the manager stuttering and tripping over his words and I honestly would feel bad for him but if I think about it, he's the reason I'm in this situation in the first place. What does he have to do with these guys anyway? My hands fumbled with my phone and I shakily pressed in the numbers for 911.
"911, what's your emergency?"
I tried whispering as quietly as I could but I froze when I heard them stop talking. I peeked my head slowly out from behind the shelves to check to see if they were all still distracted but I fell back down on my ass as I came in contact with someone. I looked up slowly and my eyes widened when I saw the barrel of a gun pointing right back at me.
"I thought I heard something back here." I'm screwed. I'm so screwed now.
I held my hands up and he motioned for me to stand up and I did. I didn't even want to look at him, I felt like I was going to die if I saw their faces. There's no way on God's earth they'll let me go. Right?
I felt him push me toward the front and I looked down at my shoes. I could see two other people's shoes as well and if I'm not mistaking one of them was holding a long gun in his hand.

"Sir...I found her hiding in the back."
My eyes widened when I felt his hand touch my chin and he lifted my face to meet his. He had these piercing green eyes that were just studying mine. His cold stare gave me chills down my spine and I couldn't help but look away from him. I was standing face to face with the most dangerous man in the city.
Giovanni Russo.
"Yo Gio..." The other guy said in a hushed tone. Giovanni held his hand up and nodded slowly, "I know. Just take care of it before the cops decide to come. I want my money regardless of whatever he says, so get what you can."
"And the girl?"
"I'll deal with her." He said, a frown forming on his face. Deal with me?! He'll deal with me how?
I made the mistake of looking behind him and my eyes widened when I saw the other two dudes that were with him beating the shit out of the store manager. I felt tears coming to my eyes when I realized what was probably going to happen to me but he moved in the way of my view.
"Why are you crying? I haven't done anything to you yet." emphasis on the yet. "Will, you not speak?" He asked when I didn't respond and I shook my head slowly.
I jumped when I heard a loud gunshot and I felt my heart beating faster. "W-why did you... Kill him?" My voice came just barely and he looked back before answering, "He owed me money. A lot of money. You wouldn't happen to know where it was now would you sweetheart?" He asked leaning into me and I shook my head.
"You see this place?" He asked, his arms stretching out, "I'm the reason he has it in the first place. I loaned him some money and he's been pushing back paying me for... So many years. If I let it slide that would give me a bad rep wouldn't it?"
"I..."
"You don't need to answer that sweetheart."
"Gio, we can't find the money!" The guy called out from the back and he clicked his tongue. "Burn the whole place down." He said in response to him and my eyes widened. He looked at me with a smirk on his face and lit up a cigarette before tossing the match onto the rack of food. "What's the matter?"

My legs felt so wobbly and I nearly fell but he grabbed me. His hands gripped my waist and he held me up, I felt my face heating up. I almost danced in joy when I heard the police sirens and he froze.
"Sir!" The man who had his gun pointed at me earlier came up from behind me, holding my phone in his hand, "This bitch called the police..."
There's that cold stare again... I let out a cry when I felt something hit my face, but it wasn't Giovanni that had done it. In fact, he was blocking the guy's hand from hitting me again. He held up his gun and shot behind me and I heard a loud groan from him.
"Lorenzo. We do not hit women here..." He said glaring at assumingly, Lorenzo. "Y-yes sir." I looked down at the blood pooling at my feet and I didn't even want to turn around to see where he'd shot him. The store was filling up with smoke by now and the other guy, whose name apparently was Sebastian came from out the back.
"The police are here-"
"I know," Giovanni said, cutting him off. "Let's go."
I felt my hand being pulled along with them and I stopped. He looked back at me and frowned, "Would you rather me leave you in here to burn? Move."
I was pushed into the car, followed by Gio and Sebastian. The Lorenzo guy who Gio shot, hopped into the front seat, but he wasn't the one driving.
"Why'd you bring the girl?" Sebastian asked and Gio shrugged, "Something wrong with that?"
They switched to a different language, which caught me off guard. I couldn't understand what they were saying but, they keep looking toward me. Damn, I don't know Italian.
I bit down on my lip to keep myself from making any sound but I couldn't help the tears from streaming down my face. We were driving so fast and the sirens were getting further and further away, all I could think about was what was going to happen to me. My mind was coming up with every possibility and every one of them made me wish they'd just left me there.
I should've skipped out on work today.
"Stop the car," Gio demanded and it pulled to a stop almost instantly. He grabbed my arm and we got out of the car. He pushed me to the back of a dark empty alleyway and I fell to the ground. Is this where he's going to...
"Your name?"
When I stayed silent, he repeated himself. "Your name?"
"Jeyri." I let out quietly.
"And last name?"
"Rae..."
"Jeyri Rae..." He crouched down next to me and moved the hair from in front of my face, "I dislike when things get difficult, I end up doing things I'd much rather not do. Do you want to know what happened to the last person who made things difficult for me, hmm?" He asked, leaning into me.
Is he talking about me calling the cops?
He pressed his gun against my head and frowned, "You get it don't you?"
I nodded quickly. "Good... And if you tell anyone what you saw today, I'll know." He pressed his finger against my lips and smiled,
"So hush."
He stood back up and walked back to the car before getting back in driving off. My heart was beating so fast I didn't even realize that I was holding my breath until he left. Did that really just happen? I couldn't even stand because my legs were shaking so much. He already knows my full name, and I was too scared to lie. Even if I tried lying he'd probably find me somehow.
Giovanni Russo...
I could still sense the lingering feeling of the barrel against my head and his finger on my lips. Hush... That was a warning... If I say anything about it at all,
he'll come to kill me.

Arcane Engines: Alchemist’s Scheme
A seemingly chance encounter with an ancient machine and an assassination attempt threaten to disrupt Veil’s education at the premier mage academy of Ithalaan. The bombings and terrorist actions that follow throw the entire region into chaos and draw him inexorably deeper into a mystery involving cults, gods, and ancient mysterious races. These events threaten Veil’s carefully crafted plans, but there are few limits on his ambition. He is willing to do whatever it takes to advance his schemes to become a Magus, including pursuing the illegal discipline of soul magic. While Veil isn’t a powerful mage yet, his spell wrought guns and illicit abilities will help even the playing field. The need to face down his enemies and fulfill his ambitions will send him desperately searching from Forerunner ruins in the Great Northern Forest to ancient abyssal cities within the depths of the planet. _________________________________________________________________ The book is primarily fantasy with a steampunk background. Science fiction elements won't be introduced for quite some time. I currently update my work at a rate of one chapter per week. I'm also in the process of editing chapters 1 - 7, changing the format to make it more readable, and introducing more show and less tell. The reworked chapters will have (edited) after the title. All chapters after 8 have already been written in the new style. I have a Patreon page if you wish to donate. Also, there will be intense situations, some explicit violence, and although it is not an erotic work, one or two sex scenes.

Author's Note: - This story will contain litrpg elements like Titles, Skills, and Levels. - MC will not become instantly powerful. I plan for a slower grind with a focus on the characters themselves rather than their abilities. - This is my first attempt at a litrpg story, so please leave any comments/suggestions you have!
