《One of Us》Chapter 40

Avery was finishing her water before they had to leave for her doctor's appointment. She really needed the blood work to come back saying the infection was cleared up. She had stopped the meds three days before and just needed the function test to say her kidney was looking good too. She wanted to get back to normal and start a life with Justin and Lexi.

"Ok, Cole, let me get my purse then we can go," Avery called as she went into the living room. She really liked having Cole around and the relationship that they had forged. He was like a brother, like Matteo and Luca were. Cole nodded and followed her to the SUV that Justin left for him to drive her in and they left for the hospital offices and the tests.

Two hours later, Cole stood up as Avery left the radiology department after the scans and functionality test. They had already taken blood and made their way to the office to meet the doctor. Avery was very nervous as they sat and her knee was bouncing like crazy.

"Avery, relax! Everything is going to be ok," Cole leaned over and whispered. He put his hand on her leg to stop the bouncing, "It feels like an earthquake with your knee bouncing!"

"I'm sorry! I'm just so nervous! What if-" Avery started but Cole cut her off, "Everything is going to be just fine. All your tests will be fine and you will get a clean bill of health. I just know it. Now breathe."

Avery took a deep breath and let it out, "You're right. Thanks for talking me off the ledge."

Cole bumped her shoulder, "That's what I'm here for."

Avery chuckled, "That and driving me around!"

Cole laughed with her and then her name was called. She stood up, grabbed his arm to make him come with her and they went to the office. Her vitals were taken and the doctor came in right after.

"Avery, it's good to see you. Your color is coming back nicely. How are you feeling?" He asked after sitting in the chair. Avery told him about being so tired, but that was even getting better. He said that it should be easing up soon. He asked a few more questions and she answered, praying that this was going to be good.

"Well Avery, based on your blood work, I can confidently say that the infection is gone and you are free of that. The meds did their job and that part looks good. The functionality test has been read by the radiologist and Avery, this is good. Very good!" He started and Avery visibly relaxed and she grabbed Cole's hand and squeezed it, "Based on your last test, there is virtually no change in function and your kidney looks really good, healthy. We dodged a bullet on this!"

Avery felt like crying, she was so happy. She could start her life and live again. With that good news and the news from her OBGYN that she had recovered from the miscarriage and could absolutely have more kids, Avery felt like she was on cloud nine. They finished the exam and left. They had just reached the car when Avery squealed and hugged Cole fiercely, showing her excitement. He chuckled and asked where she wanted to go next.

Justin was right when he said she would need to go to do some shopping and Avery dragged poor Cole to three stores to get some things she needed. He was a good sport and teased her about everything, making her laugh. After a few hours, he could see she was starting to fade and insisted that they grab something to eat and for her to get a nap in. He promised that he would take her out tomorrow if she still needed things. Avery agreed as long as he took her to the coffee shop for some tea and one of their infamous cinnamon rolls.

20 minutes later, Avery was grinning broadly as she had the warm, gooey in front of her and took her first bite and moaned quietly, "This is so damn good!"

Cole chuckled, "I know I could eat two or three of them if I'm not careful."

They sat comfortably and Avery couldn't help but notice that Cole kept an eye on the cute little brunette at the counter. She had a beaming smile and a bob haircut that framed her face perfectly. Just as Avery was going to say something, she noticed the girl kept trying to make sly glances back at him and it didn't work well.

"So, who's the cure girl?" Avery asked after swallowing another bite.

Cole blushed, "Not sure what you are talking about Avery..."

Avery raised an eyebrow, "Liar, liar pants on fire. Who is the cute girl?"

Cole sighed a little, "That's Nina...She works here full time since she graduated."

"She already graduated?" Avery asked, "She looks so young!"

Cole nodded, "Yeah, she is 17..."

"17! Cole, you better keep your hands off until she turns 18!" Avery hissed.

"Who said anything about putting my hands on her?" Cole scoffed.

Avery rolled her eyes, "Yeah, whatever. I can see you undressing her as we sit here. And remember, I have been to the club parties, I know what you are thinking about."

Cole blushed and Avery snickered, then sobered, "That's what I thought. But seriously Cole, don't do ANYTHING until she turns 18. I don't want you to get in trouble before you even patch in!"

"I know and I promise. Her birthday is in three weeks," Cole added, "Then I am asking her out."

Avery smiled, "I can't wait to meet her."

Cole smiled back, "Thanks for being a good friend Avery."

Avery grabbed his hand again and squeezed, "You're not so bad yourself," making him laugh. They finished up and headed out and Avery waved to Nina as they walked out making Cole groan and Nina blush.

Avery giggled the whole way home and hugged Cole goodbye. She was happy with her shopping trip and even happier with her appointments and couldn't wait to tell Justin. She knew he was taking care of some things today and couldn't get out of them to come with her. She didn't mind and knew he worked hard to keep everything balanced and the authorities away. They had talked some about it and she understood better now what he did.
