《One of Us》Chapter 34

Justin walked back into Avery's room Monday morning after Gio had convinced him to go home and shower. Gio insisted that the smell coming from Justin was going to wake Avery up before the doctor's did. He gave in and went home in the early hours, showered, changed clothes and went back with donuts and coffee for Gio, Luca and Tina.
Justin had discovered that he really liked getting to know the main people in Avery's life. They were all good people and even discovered the men had some things in common, especially their love of expensive whiskey. Matteo called every few hours to check in and was going to come back but Gio insisted that he stay. He knew Avery would be waking up and that she was going to be ok. Reluctantly, Matteo agreed and promised he would be home as soon as she was released.
Justin had a plan and Gio liked that he was so protective of Avery and wanted her with him. He wasn't going to take no for an answer from Avery, he was in love with her and wanted a beautiful life with her. His plan was to get Avery to forgive him then take her home with him to live. He wanted her out of the tiny apartment and with him and Lexi in his house. He wanted her with him every night and every day. He wanted to wake up with her in his arms and fall asleep with her head on his chest. He wanted her to pull on one of his shirts when she got up in the mornings and have coffee together before he left. He wanted everything with her and for the rest of his life.
Gio watched Justin sit back down in the chair that he had been living in since Avery was moved to the room. His devotion for his niece was sincere and deep and he decided he was going to help in any way he could. He just wanted Avery to be happy and to have a beautiful life. And Gio was confident that Justin could do that.

"Justin, the doctor said they had reduced the sedation a few hours ago and Avery should be getting up soon," Gio told him as he patted the younger man's shoulder.
Justin was torn between feeling happy that she would be awake and nervous as hell that she was going to reject him again, but kept it to himself, "Thanks for the update."
Gio nodded again, "I'm going to check on Tina. She went outside to call work."
Justin turned and looked over his shoulder, "Ok. If anything changes I'll call you."
Gio patted his shoulder again then left the room. Justin took Avery's hand in his again and kissed it several times, noticing that her skin was its usual temperature for the first time since Friday. He had hope that everything was going to be ok now. He placed her hand against his cheek, so he could be close to her. He just missed her so damn much and the intimacy that they had.
Justin was deep in thought about his life when he heard the beeping of the machines speed up some and he turned to look at the blips and saw that her pulse was speeding up. Justin sat back to look at her and saw her eyes fluttering.
"Avery Baby, can you open your eyes?" Justin asked, trying not to start crying. He saw her struggling some to fight off the effects of the sedation, "That's right Baby, those eyes, let me see those gorgeous green eyes."
Justin kept urging her on, rubbing her hand and kissing it when Tina and Gio came in. They saw what Justin was doing and rushed to the bedside and they all watched the woman they loved open her eyes and look around, very confused.
Avery looked around, blinking and mumbled, "What's going on?"

Tina smiled through her tears, "Hi Sweetie, how are you feeling?"
"Tired and confused," Avery answered softly.
"Piccolo Fiore, I'm so happy to see you awake. I'm going to let the doctor's know," Gio said as he squeezed her leg affectionately, then quickly went out.
"Where am I?" Avery asked, still trying to figure out what was going on.
Justin looked at Tina and she softly replied, "You were very sick Sweetie. You needed IV medication to get you feeling better."
Before anything more could be said, the attending physician came in to examine Avery. Tina and Justin moved to the side to let him examine her. The doctor asked questions and poked and prodded Avery, testing her limits.
"So can you tell me what happened? Why am I here?" Avery asked the man in the white coat.
"Well Miss Harper, you had some sort of an infection that moved into your kidney. It quickly settled in for the long haul and your body couldn't keep up. Your body was exhausted and we sedated you a little to help the IV antibiotics clear this up,' He explained to her.
Avery listened and became very nervous and upset knowing that there was more to her health. But, before she could ask, the doctor asked, "Why didn't you go and get checked out?"
Avery knew she couldn't keep the secret any longer and licked her dry lips and prepared for the fallout that was going to come, "Because I thought what I was feeling was related to something else. I never thought it would be something like this..."
Justin went to the side of the bed and took Avery's hand in his and softly said, "It's ok Avery, we know about the baby."
Avery looked at him and instantly teared up, "You do? You're not mad?"
Justin smiled sadly, "No Baby. I'm not mad."
The doctor knew this was the time for him to make his exit and let them have this private moment, "I'll let you finish talking. If you have any questions, let the nurses know and they can page me."
They watched him leave and Justin looked at Tina and Gio and they nodded in understanding and Tina said, "Sweetie, we are going to give you two a minute..."
Justin watched as they left and turned to look back at Avery when the door closed. He had no idea how he was going to tell her that the baby was gone, but he knew he had to do it. He kissed her hand and rubbed it against his face, thrilled that he was able to feel her skin against his again.
