"I don't care if we talk about absolutely nothing. I just want to talk to you."

-Maddie-

"We need to talk." Tyler says in a low voice, throwing his jacket on his apartment's sofa. The air was brimming with tension as I trail behind him silently. I stood next to the door, my feet planted on the ground. I knew better than to carelessly run my mouth and fuel his anger. His cheeks were flushed red, his fists clenching and unclenching as he ruffles his hair in a frustrated manner.

The entire time on the plane back home was spent in silence. No one spoke to one another. I was busy and caught up in all the thoughts that were swirling in my head. From the corner of my eye, I could see Tyler looking at me.

"What are we?" He asks, his voice lowering slightly. He slowly turns to me, his eyes scanning my face. His face displayed a mix of emotions that I couldn't make out. I stood there, my mind blank. No words were exchanged, both of us merely in a heated staring contest. All words were caught in my throat as I tried to fumble for my words. I look down slightly, my gaze faltering. "I-I don't know...."

He scoffs loudly, a huff escaping his lips. It was a pathetic answer, to be honest. But it was the truth. "So that's how it is?" Tyler says loudly, his laugh empty. "Everything we've done together really meant nothing to you?" His eyes only training at the blank canvas of gray above us.

"N-No! That isn't what I meant. I mean, we weren't really in a boyfriend and girlfriend relationship remember?" I stammer, my hands trembling as I wave them vigorously. Never once had it crossed my mind that Tyler is someone unimportant to me. His eyes turned darker. "Yeah..." He trails off. "So what did you mean?" "You really are something important to me Ty." I mutter quietly.

"Sure...." He sang out sarcastically. "Then why did you hesitate back there? Did you feel happy using me?" My head snaps up almost immediately. "Excuse me?"

"Why do you sound offended? Hm?" He hums, looking back at me. "Oh, is it because you still like him? Because you still have lingering feelings for that man?" He gives me a bitter look as he strides over to where I stand.

My feet were planted on the ground as I clench my fists tightly, my knuckles visibly turning white, preventing myself from bursting right there. "Oh, so I'm correct then? I was just a toy to play with." He adds, raising his eyebrows. "Wow Maddie, I certainly did not expect you to be this kind of a—"

"Shut upTyler." I seethe out, my voice cracking in the end. "Don't act as if you know me." I spat coldly, sending him a furious glare. A shocked expression takes over his face for a split second, before dissipating in the next. He quirks an eyebrow, folding his arms. "Really Madilyn?" He mutters wryly, staring me down. "It's quite obvious that you still like that pathetic bastard."

"He has done nothing for you, why still hold on?" He pushes. "Stop." I murmur, looking down. "Why is it wrong to tell you straight to your face that you still like Ren? That your heart is somewhere else while you are dating someone different?" He chuckles lowly. His cold stare sends shivers down my spine.

"After trying for God know's how long, you still aren't over him?" He shouts. "Get over it already, geez."

Tears threatened to spill from my eyes. It was already painful for me to try to close a wound yet he opens another. He knows how long I've tried to get over him and how hard it was for me. Every word he spoke hit me hard. I felt my insides burn with hurt and betrayal. I stare at him, every emotion drained out of me. I felt numb. Apathetic. I continued to eye him stoically, dull eyes boring into furious ones that suddenly melted into realization.

Tyler widens his eyes, realizing what he said. "Wait, Maddie. I di—" "It's fine. People say stuff out of anger." I answer, shifting away from him. "I just remembered that I need to go."

"Wait." He grabs my arm, guilt probably devouring him whole. I stare at him emotionlessly. "I was too harsh. I shouldn't have gone too far." He looks down, ashamed of himself. "But you did." I mutter, shooting him a stoic glance as I yank my hand away from his grasp.

"I really did—" "Listen, I need some space right now. Please understand." I say, bowing. I look away and let out a huge sigh. A sigh not of sadness or disappointment but of disbelief.

Hastily grabbing my coat and my purse, I walk out. "Maddie—" Before he could continue, I have already shut his apartment door. At that moment, I couldn't hold it in anymore. I felt my tears cascade down my flushed cheeks as I crouch outside the apartment door.

Why am I so pathetic?
