《My Twin Mates》Chapter 33

Chapter 33
"I don't feel safe with him in our pack" Jake states as he paces the bedroom floor, slowly wearing a hole in the carpet.
"I don't understand why he has to be so close to Cassidy" Connor mutters rubbing his forehead
"There at opposite ends of the house, they couldn't be closer if you tried" I argue back looking at both of them. They were both being unreasonable and I wasn't sure if it was because Kyle had been on their death list or because he was now mated to their sister.
"He could be in the cells" Jake mutters lowly but I happen to catch it
"He could also be sleeping next to Cassidy" I snap, getting tired of their comments.
Jake growls looking at me fiercely, but I flick my eyes away ignoring him completely, a few months ago that look would've scared me but now I knew that it was meaningless. He wouldn't hurt me.
"There not mated yet" Connor declares trying to argue with me.
"Neither was I when I first came here, but from what remember you both couldn't bear to be away from me.
Silence is met with my statement and I stifle a grin, there wasn't much that they could argue, Kyle and Cassidy deserved to be together, for God's sake they were mates.
"Look I'm going to bed, you guys can stay up all night trying to figure out a way to get Kyle in the cells but I'm tired. I slip into bed, the cold sheets pressing against my skin.
"Believe it or not, the house will still be standing here in the morning so will the pack so if I was smart I would get some sleep".
My mates look unconvinced.
"Go to sleep Flicker" Jake murmurs dimming the lights
I don't argue with him, I close my eyes for a brief moment when a knock on the door startles me. Peeling my eyes open, I watch as Connor enters the door for the beta. He steps into the room bowing quickly to Jake and Connor.
"We have six guards patrolling the outside of his room" The beta informs them.
"I want it doubled" Jake orders
I let out an exasperated sigh.
"Flicker" Jake warns
"What" I spit sitting up in bed. "This is getting ridiculous, he's not going to do anything while he sleeps under your roof.
"I don't trust him"
"You don't need to trust him, you need to trust me and the fact that he's Cassidy's mate".
They don't say anything at all, still unhappy with the situation.
"Maybe I should stay with Kyle in his room, just to make sure he doesn't destroy anything" I mutter sarcastically but as usual my mates take it as the truth.

"No" they scream together.
"Flicker your not seeing Kyle tonight"
"And neither are you placing 12 guards outside his room let alone one. He loves Cassidy can't any of you idiots see that. He's not going to do anything to jeopardise this relationship.
My mates look at me in shock but I haven't finished yet.
"Thank you for the information beta but I don't want any wolves guarding my friends room." I stress the word friend just to spite my mates
"Yes Luna"
Connor looks like he's going to open his mouth but I cast him a fierce stare and he backs down immediately. The door closes and I place my full attention on my mates.
"Now both of you get in the god damn bed"
I watch waiting for them to disobey me but at the same time equally petrified that they'll yell at me for stepping over my boundaries.
"Okay" Jake says and I can tell by the glint of humour in his eyes that I've gotten away with it for this time.
"If this house does burn down Flicker you do know who we're blaming" Connor clarifies as he snuggled next to me warming the sheets.
"I know" I state rolling my eyes, but deep down I'm really going that Kyle won't do anything.
...
The smell of something burning wakes me up in an instant, the sun has just peeked over the horizon but the room is still cast in the cool dark shade of the night. I turn my head, from their still form I knew that the Alpha's were still sleeping.
The smell of something burning drives me to get out of bed, Connor's words from the night before echoing in my mind. I really hope that my mind was playing tricks on me and that the smell wasn't from the fire Kyle was starting. I quietly close the door as I tread down the staircase, the lights were all off except for the one in the kitchen.
I really hope Marilyn wasn't cooking it was too early.
The smell increases as I near the kitchen, the artificial lighting blinds me momentarily as I finally enter. My eyes scan the room landing on the problem immediately, a thin wisp of smoke trailing from the toaster. Surprisingly it was burnt as well, the outside was a smoky black a stark contrast from the clear white colour it was yesterday.
"What happened" I mutter to myself as I go to examine it, someone had definitely burnt it or maybe left it on for too long. My fingers run across it, leaving feeling wet like someone had just thrown water on it to stop the fire.
"This wasn't my fault" Kyle says from behind me.

A smile graces my lips as I turn around to face him. He leaned against the doorway looking as innocent as the devil. He stared back at me but there was no love clear in his eyes like the time when he had met me in the forest, he finally loved someone else, his mate.
"So you didn't leave a piece of bread in the toaster on high heat and forget to check up on it"
"Of course not" he grins sarcasm dripping from his voice.
I laugh recalling the memories in our old pack where Kyle had successfully managed to burn all our toasters.
He walks towards me enveloping me in a hug and I don't back away, I breathe in his familiar scent that smelt of home. I loved my mates but I also missed home.
We let go and move to the lounge grabbing a couch.
"How is everyone" I ask as we sit down, the question had been on my mind for a while.
"Your brothers are all fine, unfortunately none of them have found their mate. Your Father is still Alpha but I have the feeling that he will pass on that position soon"
"Good" I breathe, I was glad that they were all safe and nothing drastic had happened since I had left. Since Cassidy was Kyle's mate maybe I would have the opportunity to return to my old pack for a visit.
...
I don't know how long we spend talking, the sun eventually slides through the window shading us in it's beautiful sunlight. I stretch my legs out on the couch letting my head fall on Kyle's shoulder.
The act was so innocent but I knew that the Alpha's would disapprove if they caught us so I lift my head letting it fall on the couch instead.
I wouldn't mind if Kyle stayed with us forever but I knew there would be heavy tensions between my mates and Kyle, so it was probably best if he left as soon as possible,
"Flicker" Jake says startling me. I get off the couch turning around to face them. The both have disapproving looks carved on their faces and I begin to wonder how long they had been watching us.
"Hey" I mumble sleepily as I smile at them but they don't return my affection still stony faced.
"I'm going back to my bed" Kyle announces getting off the couch.
"No your not" I grab his hand preventing him from going anywhere further.
Connor growls in warning and I slowly let go of his hand, I was walking on thin ice at the moment.
"You must be hungry come eat breakfast with us"
He looks unsure but agrees. We move over to the kitchen, I take a seat between Jake and Kyle, hopefully Cassidy would come down soon and loosen the palatable tension coating the air.
The silence is almost deafening as we wait for Marilyn to arrive and make us breakfast. I can feel the anger and fury emitting from the Alpha's as they sit in the same room as their escaped prisoner.
I glance at Kyle, he was doing okay but I knew that under his calm exterior he was fearful of the Alpha's and their power and influence. As much as i would miss my two friends, things would be a lot calmer once Cassidy and Kyle left.
"Hey" Cassidy announces as she enters the kitchen breaking the silence, she walks past her brothers towards Kyle him on the cheek.
Jake growls but I squeeze his hand in warning, they were mates.
So Jake and I have been thinking, we've found a small house you can live in that's close to here", Connor's voice is stiff and emotionless it was almost like he was being forced by someone to tell them this.
However, the unspoken message was clear, my mates just wanted to keep an eye on Kyle, they didn't trust him and I don't think they ever would.
"Thank you for the offer, but Kyle's already secured a house in Flicker's old pack, your more than welcome to visit though" Cassidy replies, not daring to look at her brothers.
However, my mates just ignore everything that Cassidy says,
"The house has been recently refurbished and you have a large lot of land at the back of it" Jake states staring at Cassidy directly, daring her to disagree.
"Jake I'm leaving here"
"You're not leaving here, so don't bother trying to discuss it"
Somehow this arguing was really getting to me, my head starts to feel heavy and my vision was slightly blurry.
"This is my life" Cassidy screams causing my ears to ring, I needed to get away from here but my limbs suddenly feel like jelly.
"And we have a responsibility to protect you, your our sister and we don't trust that mate of yours to do a good job".
"Hey" Kyle buts in
Beads of sweat begin to form on the surface of my skin, it felt like the temperature had increased to one hundred degrees, wasn't anyone else feeling it?
"I'm a damn good mate, no harm will come to Cassidy while she's in my care"
"Jake" I whisper and I pray that he hear's me, I really needed to see the doctor something was terribly wrong.
"Flicker" he says shocked his attention turning directly to me, his cold fingers cup my face providing temporary relief. His eyes go wide in shock as he stares at me.
"Shit, she's in heat"

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
